Chronicles and spellbooks

Silver Crusade 2/5

I'm just curious. Are there any chronicle sheets that specifically list wizard spellbooks?

Beyond the yes and no, I'm also curious which ones..

Yes, there are.

However, it's considered unsportsmanlike to say what's on the chronicle sheet for scenarios, so I can't tell you which ones.

These are generally spellbooks with preparation rituals, an idea cooked up in Ultimate Magic. Regular spellbooks taken off the rapidly cooling corpse of a defeated enemy don't get listed on chronicle sheets.

Well thanks I suppose. I'm trying to determine if there are indeed spellbooks on any chronicle sheets. Our area is running Core stuff, and as a treat to our groups wizard, I'm interested in finding the right scenario to run. So, I'm looking to buy stuff.

But, it also seems that the idea that a wizard can only get a non core spell from a scroll (uncommon at best), or spellbook (I've never seen one, but I think I've seen an alchemists formula book) is a hollow statement.

As far as I knew, if you find a spellbook listed on a defeated wizard, in Core, and it actually specifically said what spells were in it... you were permitted to scribe spells out of it.

Recording all pertinent info on the chronicle of course.

The spellbook itself does not need to be listed on the chronicle... and never will be, outside of the oddball ritual one.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Yes, getting non-Core spells as a Core campaign wizard is hard. That's kinda the point of Core, if getting non-Core stuff was easy then what's the use of Core?

I think in about 300 PFS scenarios there might be five of them with spellbooks on the chronicle sheet, and those might just have 1-2 non-Core spells. So, don't hold your breath for them. You'll have better luck with scrolls.

Any spellbooks you find in the scenario that aren't on the chronicle sheet wouldn't give you access to non-Core spells for a Core campaign character.

I donnt believe this is true. You can scribe from a spellbook in the scenario using the regular rules. You can also trade spells with other wizard characters you meet in core games.

As for actual spellbooks on chronicles, there are only a handful as mentioned already but there are a faiir few found as loot on enemy wizards.

You can scribe spells, but if the spell itself isn't legal and you don't have it listed on a Chronicle, you can't use it. Unless that's been clarified somewhere? I seem to remember this coming up before, but my search-fu is weak.

Example 1. You storm the building, run into some mooks including a wizard. You kill them. Loot the wizard, he has a spellbook with some spells including Hydraulic Push, from the Advanced Players' Guide. You'd like to scribe it, but it's not a CORE spell. At the end of the scenario you get a chronicle sheet and the spellbook isn't on there.

I don't think you gained access to Hydraulic Push in Core in this example.

Example 2: same as the previous example but now the wizard happens to be carrying the Book of Harms spellbook from Ultimate Magic, and it's on the chronicle sheet. It has a preparation ritual, but more importantly, it has Hydraulic Push on it. And as usual, when a spellbook with preparation ritual is included in the loot, the chronicle writes it out completely, including the list of spells in it.

In this example you did gain access to Hydraulic Push in Core because it's on your chronicle sheet.

I'm still with Andrew on this one.

If you read the following blog, you will note that PC's are perfectly able to scribe non-core spells they come across in spellbooks, by design. Whether the spellbook appears on the chronicle or not.

What you're describing is not how its supposed to work.

Ah, I wasn't aware of that blog. I stand corrected.
