Finesse weapon

Playing the Game

When using a whip and making a trip combat manuever would one use Athletics (STR) or would you replace the STR with DEX when making the Athletics roll?

Since Trip is an attack (has the attack tag) it is your choice as is normal for attacks with finesse weapons.

Could anyone please tell me where in the book does it say that you can use Dex for Athletics in maneuvers with a finesse weapon? I have heard of it multiple times, but the finesse property talks about attack rolls only. To my knowledge, Trip, Disarm, etc. are skill checks, not attack rolls.

Trip, disarm, etc. are attack rolls because they have the attack trait.

Glossary: p. 420 (nice) specifically calls out shove as an example of something which is not a Strike but is an attack.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

So while the book doesn't quite clearly allow this in the same way that PF1 does, there was a tweet somewhere by someone in the Dev team clarifying that it IS intended for finesse weapons with maneuver traits to allow substituting Dex for Str on that maneuver.
