Is First Mother's Fang restricted to Nagaji?

Rules Questions

Thought I would throw this question to the the masses.

Is the First Mother's Fang cavalier archetype restricted to Nagaji characters?

It should have been restricted and is in PFS.

Thanks Melkiador. Do you know if this is the general consensus?

I GM a home game. For the most part I consider myself just a narrator and a referee. I have a handful of house rules but whenever possible I stay out of the rules business. I let the players take advantage of nearly every rule loophole and cheesy combo as long as it's strictly legal.

That being said, I have a player that has a human character and wants to take a one level dip into First Mothers Fang. It sure looks like it should be restricted to just nagaji, but it is not explicitly called out as being restricted by race. I know PFS limits the archetype to just nagaji, and that is definitely a strong point to consider, but many aspect of PFS are more strictly regulated than the general version of the game.

I have decided to get some feedback on how people rule this outside of PFS. If it is generally accepted that other races can use the archetype, then I will allow it. But, if it's like Melkiador said, and people generally do not allow it, then that will be how I rule it.

Thanks for any feadback. It helps my game run smoothly.

With how the archetype is listed in Blood of the Beat (as part of the race write-up) and based on the flavour/fluff of it I would limit it to Nagaji only, even though it's not explicitly stated.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I wouldn't categorically say "you can't be a First Mother's Fang if you're not a Nagaji" in a home game but I would want a heck of a backstory for how a non-Nagaji was inducted into this tradition and everybody was okay with it, preferably one that doesn't make me wonder "why not just be a Nagaji?"

But as this is the rules forum, there is no rule that restricts that Archetype (or most of the other ones from Blood of the Beasts) to members of that race; the book itself doesn't do this I suspect mostly because "this is all stuff exclusively for more obscure races" would make owning the book less desirable for some, not because "all sorts of people are Prowlers at the World's End" is a thing they wanted to say. It is far from unreasonable to make that a house rule here; I think the calls PFS made are mostly correct, but it's your world in your own game so if you want to say Grippli are training trusted outsiders with longer lifespans to keep fiends, you are entitled to do so.

"Not allowing an archetype full stop" is not likely to actually cause problems, after all.

Silver Crusade

I'd certainly disallow it for any non Nagaji but that is as much for power reasons as flavour reasons. It is a very powerful class for a 1 level dip (especially when combined with an archetype like gendarme).

I took a one level dip as a human and even though I gave up the mount COMPLETELY for absolutely nothing it was still extremely powerful. I did write it into his back story and had it affect some of his skill choices and RP but even so it was too kuch

As someone who made a Kobold using the Hinyasi Brawler archtype from Blood of the Ancients, far be it from me to say something should be restricted just because of where it is in a book. Whilst the description of the Archtype mentions Nagaji multiple times, it is not explicitly restricted to them, where comparatively the Nine-Tailed Heir from the same book does (though it grants a race-specific feat so it kinda makes sense).
