Command Word that can be pronounced by animals?

Rules Questions

Can a crafter make an item with command word like "GRRRRRAWOOOOOWOOOO" so when such item is put on a wolf (according to the clawed quaduped slots) the wolf can activate the item? (wolf in question can have int 3 if necessary).

Well, it is possible. The main problem would be training the animal to activate the item. A 3 intelligence is good enough to understand language, but that doesn't mean the animal will remember how to activate the item, or even when. I think its appropriate to make activating that command item a trick.

If this was a Familiar on the other hand, considering they have much higher Int no trick would be necessary. Then again, familiars gain language as well.

If it's custom made for them, sure, why not. Might not understand more complex items that need targeting and what not, but I could absolutely see an animal understanding it can get positive effects (like healing or buffs) if it makes a certain sound as teaching animals to make sounds for treats is a common trick. Getting them to use it intelligently beyond basic conditions or on being ordered to would likely take at least 3 int.

Nice, thanks!

Personally I wouldn't allow it. The sounds you want are impossible for a human to mimic or create and your get little more than onomatopoeia. Which doesn't really help the wolf. Nor can I see the world being useful in the creation of said object enough that it could duplicate that command sound every time.

Maybe I'm just being a party pooper. I just cant wrap my head around the creation of such an item.

Personally, I would allow it. Remember though that command words tend to be obscure so that are not accidently triggered. The largest risk here, is that the "command word" series of grunts may come up during a wolf's "normal" responses, and accidently trigger the item.

I'd find it more likely that once the animal is trained to use the item, the animal would use the item at inappropriate times.

Like lets say its a growth based item, and it runs into a dog in town. Of course it activates the growth to intimidate the dog. Or the guards. Or that noisy kid. Animals do things just for fun.

Now imagine giving a cat a Ring of Invisibility. If you want to find it you better get an electric can opener.

I love it!

Easy enuf.
RAW allows assistance during the crafting process so easiest way to enlist the aid of a druid - Wildshape accordingly and set the desired "word". Afterward creation, they can likewise Wildshape to demonstrate the items usage.

As far as it comprehending, reference any training video. Considering the wide range of "tricks" even domestic animals are capable of learning (many even self-taught) very complex behaviors, I can easily see them learning what a particular item does and how.

Ie: my oldest beagle repeatedly watched my open the bedroom door and not only self-taught itself to correctly operate it (stand up and put a paw to each side of the round thing, push up one while pulling down with the other and lean forward: freedom! Annoyingly, it taught the younger sibling and within a few weeks only -keyed- knobs were off-bounds. smh. THREE generations later it seems normal (this IS normal, right?).

Worse, they figured out how to open the refrigerator. Fortunately they wouldn't open things, just bring wanted stuff into the bed for permission/assistance ... lunch meat and butter sticks were favorites (no idea why butter).

As a GM myself, I would allow it with the caveat of requiring a separate trick taught to the companion to activate each individual item created in this way.

My stupid cat does that to the balcony door, I wish she learned to close it too, cos it gets chilly with the door open.

Asking for a trick to activate the item seems reasonable.

You can make a side quest to find a rumored awakened (similar creature as your target animal) wizard, and have them make the item for you.

INT 20 posh-sounding wizard doggo sounds like fun.
