What will happen with this forum after the new system lands?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

1 to 50 of 54 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | next > last >>

A new version is coming, Pathfinder 2Ed(?), and that made me think about this forum.

Will it stay; "Pathfinder/Pathfinder RPG/General Discussion"?
Or will it be changed to something like "Pathfinder Classic", "Pathfinder 1Ed?
Will the new system be called "Pathfinder 2Ed", or something else?
Do you think that the site will get a major overhaul (it changed not too long ago, but who knows?)

I'd like to hear your shrewd guesses, informed opinions and wishes.

please, don't use this thread to bash/defend the new/old edition - we've had plenty of that.

I imagine it will be categorized, much like you describe, while 2E will take up the main forum pages.

I expect Pathfinder to take the backseat once the new edition comes out, though I hope that there still will be activity here.

Paizo still has a warehouse full of PF1 product to move; it'd be kinda silly to kill off their own forums when they have a vested interest in at least some minimal level of support for the old system. While I expect to see 2nd edition front and center, I don't see them completely flushing away 1st edition.

I expect that depends on which system is the most popular. Given that Pathfinder players are (historically) people who didn't like 4e, and Pathfinder 2.0 seems to have borrowed quite a lot from 4e I'm really not sure which way that will go.

I'm pretty certain they'll slide we PF1 lovers into a subforum of our own.

I will leave, permanently once PF2 hits the shelves. I haven't read much about it that I like, and there wouldn't be any products left I would want to buy.

People do silly things.

I'll be here as long as there's a "here" to be and something to chat about. : )

That's what I'm hoping for - I'm far from done with Pathfinder and I love that there's a place to go and discuss it.

This might even be a good thing? I'd much rather get down to dealing with what I like, instead of arguing with people about editions.

I won't be playing the new system either, but for me, there's still so much get out of Patfinder (Classic, PF 1Ed, or whatever it will reffered to) that I'll be here for a long time:-)

I got Pathfinder Cthulhu and I'm flowing over with ideas!

Yep. Between the Paizo books I possess, my collection of D&D 3.5 books, and 3PP material I can run PF Classic for years to come and I hope to just that.

To my knowledge we haven't made any final determinations. I've been looking into ways to make improvements to the current structure in general to fit the various needs of the community that come to the paizo.com forums and hope to roll out new ideas as we do the transition to 2E since that seems like a natural transition time. Ensuring that during this process the community who wants to discuss PF 1E still has a meaningful place to come and interact is definitely a goal of mine.

They will almost have to make separate forums/subforums for the different editions, just like they did with Starfinder. Otherwise there would be a constant state of mass confusion about what edition any given thread was about.

Even with separate forums, people will still get them mixed up occasionally, especially at first...I still see the occasional Starfinder related thread pop up in the PF side of the forums.

Thanks, Sara Marie, that sounds good!

Pretty much all I am doing now is buying the various APs that I like, and whatever supplemental material for each AP I effectively invest in. I have no idea if Paizo will continue selling their 1st edition APs for a while or not, and if so, for how long. Heck, I don't even know how long they will even list what supplemental books go with which AP/in any way information support their current items.

I hope not - I like these forums (or fora)

That is still a lot of material, there are so many APs that I still want to try.

Right now I'm having a blast as a player in a great group. we're near the end of Book Two in Curse of the Crimson Throne.

I run APs exclusively. I have quite a few of them. However, I have only run Carrion Crown, Giantslayer completely, and Strange Aeons and Reign of Winter halfway. I have found a lot of interesting resources for determining what a decent AP is given tastes. If you want, PM me and I can give you what I have learned so far. Right now, I am running Skull & Shackles, and we are about to enter the second book (but there are two different second books to pick from).

oops, that first 2 sentences didn't get quoted right.

Man, I've not even halfway through the APs. I'll be running them for years to come, alongside 2E where I can.

And naturally, haunting the forums as I have for the last decade.

True, I am the same way. But there are some APs I won't ever run, like Wrath of the Righteous (mythic rules being a mess), all the 3.5 APs that haven't been revised for Pathfinder, probably Kingmaker because of the odd rules, etc.

Eventually I will have all the APs out of the 1st edition that I'm willing to run. Right now, I have Rise of the Runelords, Shattered Star, Mummy's Mask, Carrion Crown, Curse of the Crimson Throne, Iron Gods, Jade Regent (although I may regret Jade), Reign of Winter, Hell's Rebels, Strange Aeons, Skull & Shackles, and almost finished Return of the Runelords. I had and ran Giantslayer but didn't like it from a GM's perspective, although my players liked the ease with which they stomped giants.

There isn't a single AP I won't play. Just ones I will play first and ones I will play last.

I don't think Paizo is silly enough to cut off a product line just because another comes out(see lessons learned under 4.0), so PF1(E?) will continue in some format. Sure they want people to transition to PF2 and SF2 as it's the new product line. I don't think chicken little will make another début. I'm thinking of it as a new product line of shoes... which fits you better? Have you tried the new one?

To be frank, I think it IS silly enough to cut off PF1. Time will tell.

However, I am also certain that within a year and a half of PF2's release, their sales will tank. Within 3 years of PF2's release, Paizo will be dead or they will rerelease a version of PF1.

It really is too bad that no one at Paizo knows the market and industry as well as you.

The same was said about 4th edition.

Guess who proved to be the better bell weather, the publisher or the players.

Basically, competing with 5e in their own bailiwick is only going to end up in disaster for Paizo. Essentially they are trying to be more 5e and woke than 5e.

Remember why people switched over to PF in the first place? 4e sucked. Why do people play PF over 5e now? Easy, you get to better define your character and it's got more crunch. But PF2 takes away those things, and tries to be exactly like 5e.

What do you mean by "more woke than 5e"?

This thread is about what will happen to the forums, not whether or not 2E will be successful, if you want to stay in the thread, get it back on track.

Thank you, Sara Marie!

Hopefully nothing.
Obviously Paizo will focus on V2 going forward, but hopefully will learn from WOTC's mistakes and continue supporting their loyal PF1 fanbase via the forums/reprints rather than intentionally lose sales to the various pirate sites.

Ideally they'll assist with version conversions although I know that's too much to hope for.

However IF the forums do vanish/lock, it simply means the existing fanbase relocates to Enworld/similar to continue our discussions without the company; costing Paizo.com visitors/eyeballs - and potential sales.

Considering that this site maintains forums for 3.5/OGL and other games I am highly confident there will a place for OG Pathfinder discussions. Or PF1e or classic or whatever it will be known as.

I'm hoping that these forums, and the digital versions of the 1E materials will be available for a good long time.

Hopefully just kicked over to the side and not deleted. There's a lot of info for people that want it, tips for APs, weird build and character ideas, and just advice to double check. I know I would really hate to see the AP sections vanish. I'm in the middle of two of those, I could really use the help.

Considering that the archive forums contain the discussions from the original Alpha Playtest and subsequent system rulebook playtests, the PF 1e threads will most likely be moved to new section of the forums rather than being deleted.

I mean, in the forum directory we have a top level forum "Pathfinder" with a subforum "Pathfinder RPG" whose "General Discussion" we are in now. Discussion of the playtest is in "Pathfinder Playtest" which also has a "General Discussion" different from this one.

I feel like all you really need to do is rename "Pathfinder RPG" to "Pathfinder 1st Edition" and "Pathfinder Playtest" to "Pathfinder 2nd Edition."

Discussions of setting details will be common to both editions (and everything else with the Pathfinder branding) so doesn't need to go in either of those places. I also figure the discussion of Adventure Paths can just continue in the APs forum just creating a new subforum for the new ones (plus "converting [this AP] to 2nd edition" is a valid thread in the subforum for that AP).

There's a little spot way down there, where unwanted editions go.

Yes, there are still so many APs that I want to play! I'm encouraging my players and friends to buy the Core Book & APG while they are still in print.
