Intelligence based Unchained Rogue?

Advice

Shadow Lodge

Was looking at the Sylvan Trickster who gets witch hexes and Rose Warden, who is Roguey but also gets a lot of Int based abilities.

So my thought is, how practical is an Int based build based on this? I'm thinking an 18 on a 20 point build.

Depends on your point buy. The tricky part is you're going to be split between Intelligence and Dexterity, so one of the two is going to atrophe over the course of your career. To compensate you want to have a high score in both ability scores over the course of your career. I'd preferably want to see 18's in both at 1st level (see elf would definitely be nice here). Other than that, it should work nicely.

Personally I'd stick with Sylvan Trickster rather than going Rose Warden, since you want to get access to Major and eventually Grand Hexes.

Like I said, 20 point buy. I'm thinking Kitsume with Int for Cha or vanilla Tiefling (leaning towards tiefling) I think I can get away with a:

(Assuming Tiefling)

Str 12
Dex 16
Con 14
Int 18
Wis 10
Cha 6

Have a trait to make at least one cha based skill Int based.

16 dexterity is dangerously low. The problem is your stat boost every 4 levels is going to be going into intelligence given this spread. 16 dexterity is passable at 1st, but by 10th it's going to really be holding you back. I think dropping strength down to 10 and constitution down to 12 would be prudent to pay for more dex.

Other than that, looks good. Maybe consider picking up exotic weapon proficiency at 3rd level for a better weapon. The Elven Curve Blade and Elven Branched Spear are particularly nice choices for an Unchained Rogue.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

As a sylvan trickster you've got the hexes (the witches' backup to their spells), lots of skills but no specialty to boost them above ranks + ability + 3, and sneak attack. How to make these synergise?

One way might be to go into unarmed combat and pick up enforcer and hex strike. Punching someone to give them shaken, debilitating strike and either the evil eye (if the enemy can be affected by mind-affecting spells) or misfortune hex (if they're undead or something) should be pretty good. Later on you could get the sap adept/master feats if you want to aim for one punch takeouts or TWF if you'd prefer to stack up the sneak attack damage that way. Or you could focus on setting up sneak attack when flanking isn't workable.

That sounds like a really fun rogue avr. I've never like full spellcasters too much but I've looked at the witches hexes and the Sylvan Trickster a bit.
