So what's coming inbetween now and Character Operations Manual

If I understand the schedule, Character Operations Manual, which we are playtesting now doesn't get released until at least late next year...so what's in the pipe before that?

COM playtests and Pathfinder 2e

Just forget about anything coming out, if it does it'll be a welcome surprise.

I would kill for something Starfinder shaped in hardcover form. I'm jonesing man. Jonesing real bad.

I know, but absence makes the heart grow fonder and all that.

As much as I really really want more SF hardcover content, I want GOOD SF hardcover content more. So I force myself to sit patiently and wait

There is the beginners box early is next year. Other than that nothing else has been announced.

they have caught a lot of flack for the many typo's and rules issues in other books, I know I have gave them plenty. Maybe this is how they are rolling forward by testing things and taking a slower more methodical approach? I agree though that I would love to see more about what is planned. There is tons of ground left to cover in for books that are "needed" rules wise before we even get to the fun setting stuffs.

That said pretty stoked for the Operations manual but yeah its going to be a long wait.

I maintain that a few setting focused softcover splatbooks would help soothe the shakes...

Since they are playtesting material from the Character Operations Manual, I would assume that nothing coming out before that book requires a public playtest. In addition to the Beginner's box, another Armory or Alien Archive would seem to be possible.

*crosses fingers for 'Ultimate Space-Magic' book*

An Alien Archive is almost certain.

I believe one Alien Archive every october is a given, specially considering they are shorter than bestiaries.

Not sure if they can keep up the "new mechanics" in every book though.

They can pick and choose from 11+ years of Pathfinder mechanics to bring back. I think they'll do okay.

I do wonder if the COM will replace the Archive slot, though, since it's been the "late 2017-2018" slot thus-far.

Another Alien Archive in October might be tough if they want this Character Operations Manual to come out near the end of the year. Maybe Alien Archive 3 will come out slightly earlier?

Softcover Starfinders would keep me from stroking out for sure.

Softcover Starfinder books are already there - the AP books. It took a while for me to realize but a considerable portion of each of them is not actually the adventure, but new races, equipment, planets in the Vast etcetera. Most of which are somewhat tied to the actual adventure, but the whole of it is almost more of a themed magazine also containing an adventure putting the contents to use, than an "adventure and appendix" like you might naively think.

Alien Archive 3 is coming out in August!

And you are totally right, Lau, that the AP books are Starfinder softcover books. There are so many wonders to be found within their covers. They are gnome-approved!

Hmm

Personally I'm not really fond of that format. AP volumes just smell GM only, or they ought to be. But there's a lot of player-facing material in there, especially when SFS boons start referencing them for playable races.

Playable dirindi & sarazoans.

If there is any justice in the universe.

Well for a start I horribly misspelled sazarons because of the way my brain conflates letters.

But, assuming you weren't poking fun at said spelling error, dirindi & sazarons are the natives of Arkanen, a full pact world member moon of Liavara. Dirindi are described as "three-eyed, electrically charged humanoids" while sazarons are centaur-like creatures with humanoid upper bodies & sarian lower bodies.

They're probably the two biggest glaring omissions in terms of statted species for the pact worlds. But, it has been heavily hinted that they'll be featured in Alien Archive 3; one of the confirmed monsters in the book is native to their home world & devs made teasing comments regarding their inclusion.

So there may be justice in the world after all.

Remember though that the Pathfinder line was originally just the Adenture Path issues at first as well. They were intended as the successor subscriptions to both the Dragon and Dungeon magazines.

I'm certain once PF2 is out of the gate, they'll start looking at ways to ease back into Pathfinder's monthly softcovers and start seriously considering putting a softcover line out for Starfinder as well. An easy way to start out would be a "Race of the Month" guide; short softcovers that focus on a race or planet and go really deep into what it means to be a member of that race, or native of that planet like the Pact worlds hardcover already started.

How about a big fat "no" to a more frequent release rate. The fact that Starfinder is on a much more timid release schedule is one of its biggest advantages.

What we currently know is coming out this year

January: AP Heart of Night (Book 3 of Signal of Screams, Info about Shadow Plane), Flip-Mat Jungle World, Against the Aeon Throne Pawns.

February: AP Fire Starters (Book 1 of Dawn of Flame, Info about Asanatown, Info about Church of Sarenrae), Alien Archive 2 Pawn Box

March: AP Soldier of Brass (Book 2 of Dawn of Flame, Info about Brass Bazaar, Tourist Spots in Burning Archipelago), Flip-Mat Warships, Critical Fumble Deck

April: Beginner Box, AP Sun Divers (Book 3 of Dawn of Flame, Info about City of Noma, Criminal Organizations across Pact Worlds), Signal of Screams Pawns

May: AP The Blind City (Book 4 of Dawn of Flame, Cults of the Pact Worlds, Weird tech and magic items), Flip-Mat Spaceport

June: Skitter Crash (Free RPG Day), AP Solar Strike (Book 5 of Dawn of Flame, Info about city of Kahlannal, Cultures on the sun and other stars), Rules Reference cards

July: AP Assault on the Crucible (Book 6 of Dawn of Flame, Plane of Fire), Flip-Mat Ice World

August: Alien Archive 3, AP Fate of the Fifth (Book 1 of Attack of the Swarm!, Info about the Swarm, Player Guide on how to fight the swarm), Tech Terrain Pawn Collection

September or Later: Rest of the Attack of Swarm AP, Character Operation Manual

I still want more setting information. The AP articles in the back are nice, but they tend to be limited to whats appropriate to the AP. Having a bi-monthly Starfinder Campaign Setting would allow us to explore other parts of the setting for those of us who aren't running the AP's. I'm less concerned about new rules elements as I am about not wanting to wait like...another year for a look at the Veskarium

I'd really prefer to step away from the AP-omnibus-magazine format. I may be interested in criminal organizations in the Pact Worlds, but have no particular desire to buy part 3 of an AP.

I can't believe I'm going to say this but, yeah, don't PATHFINDER UP this setting please.

This is why I've been BEGGING for splat books.

Indeed.
If two big books a year is the goal - which is fine by the way, agreed on that too - I'd rather have one of those be heavy on the setting stuff, like Pact Worlds was : still some rule stuff, but mostly fluff.
So one equivalent to that, one AA/Armory/Manual, and I'd be happy.

I'm also not overly fond of needing to buy APs I'll never run or play in order to simply get access to said setting information.

Personally I'd view the sweet spot not at two books a year but three. One primarily setting, one primarily crunch, and an Alien Archive or equivalent on top of that. I think the Alien Archive occupies a different niche than something like the Armory an the COM.

I would very much like to see things go this way :)

Two or three books are year aren't a big deal.

I just don't want to see Starfinder get bloated like Pathfinder with dozens of books being released in a year.

I don't think that'll happen anytime soon. What with P2 coming out in a few months.

Hopefully a line of Starfinder Tales.

Seriously guys, I loved the PF Novels, and even the Comics were pretty cool, doing it up right with Starfinder would help line your pockets with MY cash at least.

Keep in mind, when it comes to bloat, Starfinder is FIFTEEN YEARS before it reaches "We wrote a two whole books to help you read the other books we wrote" level of bloat in it.

Yeah, I'm not worried. Just expressing my desire.

I actually find myself really enjoying SF books when they release, becuase they don't do so constantly. I can actually keep up with what's happening.

It does kind of depend on the person. I am seeing both people who are arguing they want more books, and people who are complaining that Paizo is moving too fast, and that they should slow the release schedule.

I'd personally like a quarterly softcover, small in size, that's just ship info.

New premade ships, expansion bays, weapons, etc.

We already get 1 new ship every month, but I'd like more.

I'd be fine with less books like we have now. I just want them to be more substantive.

You could honestly do 1 quarterly softcover for all of that: one for guns, one for ships, one for planets

No new themes or archetypes unless they're super relevant, no races unless they belong to one of those planets, just soft covers full of stuff.

Once we (hopefully) get enough feats to make characters with in the COM, I think the slow roll is fine. That's the main hang-up for me so far.

Have to admit that if they did release much more books, I would be unable to buy starfinder books at all since I run and play pathfinder :P If Starfinder books were more common, I would have to choose between two

I may be in the minority but since i was looking for a science fantasy setting that wasn't Star Wars for so long, I happily left everything but the Pathfinder Hardcovers behind.

I've essentially stopped altogether. The only things I buy anymore are Bestiaries, race support, and deities.

What I think would be useful is an annual compilation of the non-adventure material from the APs. The new planets, races, mmonsters, archetypes, etc. that were in the previous years APs.

Almost all of that is open content and ends up on Nethys/d20pfsrd, so compilation books don't really make sense these days.

You still have to own the book to use it in PFS.

Which means a tiny fraction of the customer base, also one that knew what they are signing on to.

Doesn't make putting out compilations of stuff that's already compiled any less financially uninviting. The fact that Paizo did NOT put out a "Complete Feats, Archetypes and Spells" book for the very end of PF1's life cycle speaks a lot.

Is this an aversion to mechanical options only? Or would you be against more lore-only stuff too?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'm happy with a slower release rate, but I am finding the releases disappointingly brief. I'd like the page count to be closer to Pathfinder books. (I loved the Alien Archives, for example but would have preferred them to be considerably bigger - similarly with the Pact Worlds book).
