Preventing AoO

Rules Questions

I’m just curious if there’s anything that prevents an Attack of Opportunity from triggering, like cover or concealment.

For example, throwing a smoke pellet at an enemy standing next to the Wizard. That would give the Wizard concealment. Would that prevent AoO?

Per the PRD, Total Concealment prevents the AoO. Same is true for cover.

"You can't execute an attack of opportunity against an opponent with total concealment, even if you know what square or squares the opponent occupies."

There are also ways to prevent them from triggering against certain actions - casting defensively is probably the most-used version of that. Is there anything in particular you're trying to do, or do you just want general ways of stopping them?

I was just looking for general ways. I just made an Alchemist and I was hoping there was some ways I could use alchemical items to do little tricks like that. Mostly just to attempt to be useful if I’m not throwing a bomb or a splash weapon.

I had remembered the Total Concealment and cover thing but I wasn’t sure if it was just some old bygone 3.5 rule bouncing around in my head.

If you are paladin/inquisitor/antipal you can Litany of Sloth, tho that is only useful against "big dumb thing" with rubbish will save.

More of an Advice topic.

Distance is the simplest method, stay 2+ squares away from most medium sized combatants.
Wands don't provoke. So get two spring loaded wrist sheaths and put a healing wand in one and a defensive wand in the other.
Vanish spell, short term invisibility. Obscuring mist spell and a little distance.
For getting items, handy haversack and possibly Unseen Servant spell.

If you are in a home game get your spell list expanded. Otherwise a dip in diviner wizard and magical knack may cure spell list issues for item usage etc.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Acrobatics. If your character is standing next to something and wants to take an action that would Provoke, use the Acrobatics skill to move half base speed without through threatened squares first. The mechanic is you're rolling your skill check against a DC of your opponent's CMD. Doing so gets you 10' - 15' from your opponent so your Standard action or other Move action doesn't Provoke.

This should include soft cover... so if you have someone between you and the bad guy.

Hmmm... just an arm strap on the back of your quickdraw halfling shield...

Or wield one as a barbarian with body bludgeon.

You are in luck! The spell Illusion of Calm is on the alchemist list at 1st level.

Illusion of Calm wrote:

School illusion (figment); Level alchemist 1, magus 1, psychic 1, sorcerer/wizard 1

Casting Time 1 standard action
Component V, S
Range personal
Target you
Duration 1 minute/level
Saving Throw Will disbelieve (on hit; see below); Spell Resistance no
Description
When casting this spell, you create an illusory double that takes the same space of you. That double makes it look like you are standing still, even when you are not. While under the effects of this spell, you do not provoke attacks of opportunity when you cast a spell, make a ranged attack with a thrown weapon, or move out of your first square during a move action. It does not hide ranged attacks made with any type of projectile weapon.

When a creature hits you with an attack of any type, it gains a saving throw to disbelieve the figment. On a successful saving throw, it successfully disbelieves and the spell’s effect ends for that creature.
