Breaking an Intelligent Item's Domination

Rules Questions

If a character is dominated by an intelligent item, is there any way to break the domination?

Per the rules, if an intelligent item wins the battle of wills, it becomes dominant and can command it's wielder to perform various actions. This is supposed to last for 1 day.

Is there any way to end the domination, or do you just need to wait a day and try to win the battle of wills on your next try?

Anyone could hit the dominated character with Protection from <alignment> which lets the character act normally for the duration. Placing the intelligent item in an extra-dimensional space (like a portable hole, or another plane) will put the item in a place where it can't command the target of domination.

FYI: The dominated character will probably attempt to resist the Protection spell.

This is incorrect, if they are already dominated protection only let's them try to save again at a +2 bonus. It only prevents new attempts to mentally control the creature.

Per Items against Characters, you have the following:

Quote:
Dominance lasts for 1 day or until a critical situation occurs (such as a major battle, a serious threat to either the item or the character, and so on).

So when you roll initiative, you also roll the ego check.

As to Protection from Evil and the like, it only applies if the source is Evil. So if the item is Good aligned, you need Protection from Good. It will give the +2 reroll on the save if you are already under, and make you immune to any new attempt (even if you fail the save). That is, if you are covered when the check occurs, then you determine if you are affected. If you are, then you are not controlled while the spell is in effect, but once the spell expires, it will be affecting you.
