Music of your dreams?

Do you ever have a dream where you hear a song that's not a real song but one your own subconscious made up? I have had it happen numerous times. Usually the songs sound really good which makes me wonder: if my mind can generate a song like that why can't I write a song just as good when I'm awake?

For me, it was writing. I would wake up wondering why couldn't I write something as good as that? But that dream no longer occurs.

Two words describe the music I hear in my sleep.

Platypus polka.

Mine trends toward:
- discordant half-melodies (notes but in no particular rhythm or structure)
- songs I’ve heard elsewhwere before
- pastiches of one or more of the above
- things I don’t remember or take notice of in my dreams

More than songs, I tend to remember stories, or scenes. The narrative of the thing, rather than the setting or side elements. Have you considered studying musical study enough to write what you hear in your dreams?

“Studying musical study” - nice one, TL, no one’ll guess you edited that sentnece multiple times to make it sound better and failed miserably... XD

What if the song isn't any good, but you dream that it's good?!

What if you aren't dreaming at all!

What if you're in someone else's dream?!

What if my face is someone else's dream?!

... I'm real sorry, if so. Look, I swear I'll shave. Next month, even!

... maybe. (My Eldest has been begging me not to shave my beard off, recently. We will see.)

I dream about stories, but only fragments of, and I've never been able to get the same dream twice. Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde was born out of Robert Louis Stevenson's dream(or nightmare, more accurately).

Iron Maiden's signature song "The Number of the Beast" was written after bassist Steve Harris had a nightmare about the Book of Revelation.
