The other thread is fun, so I figured I'd start one here too.

What are the Day Jobs your characters have?

1) Lyther would prefer to just fly around all day, but to make a living she writes about it Profession (Poet) and occasionally carries some cargo (Smuggler). Poet is by far the invested skill.
2) Hand of Oras is a doctor (strangely, not a listed profession) specializing in genetics and reproduction.
3) Tailstrong is a mercenary, true. But his real calling is as an artist, carving his likeness into weapons and ammunition that he sells to those curious about Morlamaws.
4) Sunny Simar has a video blog of Simar Life and her adventures across the galaxy.

Grand Lodge 4/5 Venture-Agent, Texas—Houston

Let's see:

702) Magda Farseeker is an electrician. Dwarven darkvision comes in handy there.
707) Gorza is a sysadmin, but is still 1st level and may be rebuilt. (Strangely, computer professional is not a listed profession.)
708) Whale Song sings Morlamaw opera, which sounds suspiciously like her namesake.

702 - Tana Ikarian (dwarf operative/mystic) is an Archaeologist. She's from Salvation's End, so she is very curious about other cultures.
703 - Gronnigan Conroy (nuar technomancer steward officer) is a Forensics Expert.
704 - Bellweather Conroy (nuar soldier) is a Paramedic.
705 - Dr. Zorkfeld (witchwyrd envoy) writes jingles for Tetrad Prosthetics as a Musician.

My eventual 706 will be a SRO shock & awe soldier who plays an animatronic dragon in Triaxian heavy metal videos.

701 - Atlas-1(Android Operative) is a professor of Astrophysics and Drift dynamics, who sidelines as a flight instructor.
702 - Sv-tkt(Wrikreechee Mystic) is a herbalist.

(702) Quantum-K, a lashunta envoy/soldier, picks up some extra creds as a test pilot.
(703) Blaze spreads the good word of Saranrae when ze's not helping the Society as a psychic detective
(704) Grump Gunderson is a dwarven asteroid miner. Being a star shaman helps.
(705) Bodie Creed is a half-orc who used to do contract work for those 'nice' folks on Apostae. Now he's an independent mercenary.
(706) Cosmo Stello works part-time as a bioengineer. Witchwyrd Technomancer.
(707) Koto Kaiju is a halfling with a serious case of wanderlust. As a tempered pilgrim follower of the Cycle, he doesn't really have an need for a day job.

Let's see...
701) Amun'lei, a human empath mystic, is an interpreter, which makes sense for a war-chaplain raised by deaf kasathan pilgrims.
702) Amma, a kasatha technmancer is a vidgamer, which fits with her being kicked out of sanctioned tournaments after some blackmail and some technomancy got her framed.
703) Rutan, a human sharpshooter soldier is a party crasher, showing up at festivities that people want ruined and making change happen. This fits with the fact that they defected from the military to take out corrupt military officials at their own opulent parties.
704) Saliera, a korasha lashunta envoy, is a musician, playing elegant chambergrim music on her keyboard, in the hopes that her music and adventuring will bring her rival out of their funk.
705) Leefily, an android xenodruid mystic, is a gardener. I don't think I need to elaborate further.
706) Vanten, a vesk weapon solarian/blitz soldier, is a miner. She dug too deep and found an eldritch horror, which gave her her solar mote. She now seeks to be famous enough to challenge said horror to a duel so she can find out why.
707) Jill Lumbergh, a human envoy, is a corporate headhunter. She also tends to hunt monster heads.
708) Versus-Plus, an android daredevil operative, is an athlete. They serve as tv movie inspiration by working to overcome their glitches, when they really just became an athlete to get the money to fix their glitchy frame.
709) Sturmesser, a shirren soldier, is a missionary, which makes sense when you consider that they're a priest of Desna.
710) Stella, a feychild gnome armor solarian, is currently in college, but fully intends to be an exotic dancer to pay for her textbooks.
711) Daphodil Blaken, a summerborn ryphorian guard soldier, is a cosmetologist, covering up her countless gladiatorial scars and redefining beauty.

...I have another 18 SFS characters, but I'll finish this later because I'm tired now.

Man, has it been a while since I’ve been on here! I kinda been on a bit of a Starfinder hiatus lately, but hopefully I’ll be able to resume once a session doesn’t interfere with other commitments. But enough about me!

My boy Felix, the young human blitz soldier that he is, is a dancer through and through, though he does dabble in other strains of the performing arts. And with the addition of the awesome new ribbon weapons (albeit only the plasma ones), he’s gonna become even better at it! (It also plays into his stellar Dex in battle, meaning he can actually hit things now, instead of relying on his 14 Str. Yay! XD)

I have a couple other characters concepts floating around that I haven’t gotten round to building quite yet, but a notable one is Machete, a Vesk of indetermine class who once served in his people’s military as a cook, before enlisting in the Society as a sort of liason. He now serves up cuisine for his fellow Society members and mainly fights with throwing knifes and his good ol’ Vesk chompers.

I think it would make for an even more illuminating conversation, and I'd love to hear more about the why of each choice.

"My profession? Tea connoisseur, of course!"

★--- ★ --- ★ --- ★

Charli runs the rickety tea stand, the Posh Kettle, directly across from the Lorespire Complex. What amuses me about this is that she's used her profession in some 80% of the scenarios* that she's been in so far, but she's not as invested as she should be because she keeps going on Starfinder missions. (Right now, at 7th level, I still have only one point invested in the skill!) Still, she's found lots of other people who want to run the business for a while including that sweet little old lady she met in the Commencement. In my head canon, she's been working on franchising and expanding the business but hasn't really figured out how to monetize it well, so most of her income is going straight back into the business, or into the pockets of her other employees.

Still, it's fun to set up the hotelier tent, put on the apron, and open the tea stand on another planet.
_______
* It is amazing how differently conversations go when you offer someone quality tea.

Sv-Tkt is a Wrikreechee, from the planet Akchios. On this watery planet, their language developed to include the vibrations of tone from ones speech, in addition to the words themselves. Upon reaching Absalom Station, Sv-tkt quickly heard the homely wisdom that plants grow better when you speak to them. He connected this to how the Wrikreechee language works, and so took up a job at a garden, tending to the plants.

Talking to the plants reminds him of the emotion of talking to people back at home, helping to relieve homesickness without making him look crazy.

"So you think human babies are a handf...hey come on get out of there"

The camera turns on with assorted muzzles, ears and whiskers peering into the lens. Small paws try to wave at the camera. The camera is set up on a table looking down at a white rat in an apron with a tactical bag over their shoulder.

""Right. So. As I was saying you think human babies are a handful? Try working in a ysoki nursery. Lets start with the obvious. Humans have one MAYBE two babies at a time. Ysoki get four to six. You think you're going to get six times as many babysitters on this? Four times the pay? HAH. Too expensive "

There's a loud CLANG and the metal side of an enclosed crib falls out and three ysoki pups jump out and scurry under the furniture

"You don't realize this if you grow up in an all ysoki colony, but working on an interspecies endeavor like the master of stars and you'll notice how your typical ysoki is roughly the equivilant of a trained human engineer. Lets see what did they do to the ca..crib this time..ahh the old harden chewing gum into a wrench and then unscrew the bolts trick"

"And where did they get the chewing gum?" He turns one of the rats upside down with a wheee and rumages around the cheek pouch, taking out a piece of gum the size of a baseball, a can of aerosol cheese that sparks and lights on fire when pressed, a nut, two bolts, and a hair scrunchy. All of which go into a locked bin. Except the ysoki. Because he remembered this time.

"So why did I become a field agent? " There's a WHOOSH behind him. The ysoki sniff sniffs and brings his tail into view, casually notes that its on fire, again. And dunks it into a bowl of oatmeal left on the floor "I wanted to do something SAFE." the camera lens is popped off and turns around to look at the camera, the exposed wires, and the ysoki holding a plastic butterknife and waving at the camera. Said pup is scooped up and carried with the camera over to the crib.

"ysoki kids DO have one advantage. That they're adorable. The camara bobs as it pans to the pups now back in the crib. The sparking of an arc welder is heard off camera

" Ysoki kids are cute. As opposed to human babies. Seriously, your kids are ugly. Don't show me pictures till they're at least three, when they stop looking like wrinkly goblins "

Why did I become a Vidgamer? Well, I've always had a bit of the obsess with Vidgaming. And I was getting pretty fame with it in my teens. But Daddy didn't clude that was a good career choice, however. So he credstick bullied me into Medschool. Don't get me wrong. I like helping senties and being a doc is certainly a noble prof. But it just doesn't have the same glam. Still, I was a good little princess and did what was expect. That is till Daddy gave me a good little princess reward by sending me on a lux space cruise in my sophy year. Course, Daddy didn't clude to the idea we might get hijacked by space pirates and held for ransom. Or that I'd get involved with one. Let me tell you girls, if you ever get a chance with a Free Captain...well, you get the idea. But I'm entroping now. So back on target. Anyway, after that nova-cluster, I did a hard think and decided Daddy could keep his creds and I would go after my dream of being a Vidgame Star. And now everybod knows who I am, and I got my own mass-creds.

So you want to know why I became a Merc? Well, there just ain’t a lot of job opportunities for Ysoki on Akiton. Sure, you can do okay for yourself by becomin’ a grease monkey or a pit fighter. But that’s all most folks want to see out of a Ratfolk on the red planet. So I became a Merc. Gave me a chance to get off-world. Plus, I get to blow things up and get paid for it. Can’t ask for much more than that.

It is my goal to better myself. To become more than just a droid. I calculated the best way to do that was to study what parts of other creatures were superior and adjust my body accordingly. Since, unlike droids, you can't disassemble other races to see how they work while they are still alive, I decided being a coroner was the best way to figure out how to better myself.

I have always found fixing other sentient creatures to be fascinating. The fact you can’t even change your own DNA to fix problems is almost inconceivable. That’s why I became a Doctor. Sure, Akiton isn’t exactly known for its online medical schools, but I had to join the military for a year just to pay for that! So what if I barely passed my surgery class and occasionally put things back wrong. I always try to find people to practice on to make myself better, and if I mess up, I can just fix it with magic. So, I don’t know what everyone gets so worked up about.

What’s Slapdancing, you say? I am not surprised you haven’t heard of it. I will help educate you. Slapdancing is a traditional Skittermander rhythmic dance that relies heavily on hand movements and can include rhythmic slaps, claps, and snaps, as well as, various small finger-worn percussion instruments. Streamers are also sometimes used to accentuate the movements.

My Great Grammy was a Slap Dancer back in her time. Watching vids of her as a welp always fascinated me. I know not too many Skittermanders are into this form of traditional dance anymore. But I wanted to bring it back. So, I added some newer dance elements and music to it to try to reach the new generation. I call it 'Slap Hop.' It’s just my way of helping. Plus, being able to use my Solarian powers to manifest a giant hand to help with the dance doesn’t hurt any.
