Offensive Life Oracle Build

Advice

Grand Lodge

My group will be doing Carrion Crown soon, and because no one's volunteering to be the healer, that leaves it to me. I have an idea for a melee cleric (angelfire acolyte archetype), but I was wondering if anyone knew of a build for the oracle that allowed them to be a life oracle, but still could be offensive in battle. I'm already looking at taking Selective Channel and Purifying Channel, and blackened curse. That -4 to attacks is pretty detrimental though.

I wouldn't necessarily have to be a heal bot, but life oracle would definitely have its benefits.

if you take the spirit guide archetype you can use it to grab life link from the life spirit. At that point you can be whatever kind of orcale you want to be and still "be a life oracle".

Using racial epithets in battle would be pretty offensive I think.

The impression I get from the blackened curse is that it's intended for caster focused builds who would appreciate the additional spells without being too badly hurt by by the attack penalty. Also consider that a common method of upping damage output for melee types is Power Attack or Two Weapon Fighting which won't really be viable options for a 3/4 BAB class that's already taking a -4 attack penalty. Unless maybe your party works particularly well together to lower target ac/boost your hit chance I think you'd be better of looking at a different curse.

Just pack the spell Shared Sacrifice. You'll be taking lots of damage with Life Link, so why not halve it and get your opponent to eat the other half? Later on, just actively try to take damage once you get the spell to land. Game, set, and match.

That doesn't kick in until 3rd level. That'd mean basically no healing until then. We wouldn't survive.

Um, did you just tell me to use racial slurs in game???

That's a second level spell which means I'm looking at 4th level. Was hoping to be useful before then.

Essentially what I'm seeing here is that no, I can't be a life oracle at 1st level and be an offensive character. That's depressing.

He made a joke because you asked for how to make an "offensive" character.

You're in Carrion Crown as a positive channeler. That's reasonably offensive already. Would have been really handy for our party to have one. (It wouldn't have saved us from TPK, but nothing saves 3rd-level PCs from an impossible string of heavy weapon crits.)

Sure you can. Spending your feats on channeling and taking a combat-penalizing Curse isn't going to get you there, though. You need to devote a bit of your resources to it.

How about a Half-Orc Spirit Guide Life Oracle reach build? Take Combat Reflexes for your level 1 feat, Fate's Favored and Tusked traits, and Sacred Tattoo alternate racial trait. Take a Curse like Haunted or Plagued that doesn't penalize melee combat. Take Bless and Divine Favor for your initial spells. A 20 point buy build could be something like 14 14 14 10 10 16 after racial adjustments.

Wield a longspear for 3 AoO a round, and use your standard action for spells, channeling or more spear attacks. You have a natural bite attack for anything that gets inside your spear's reach. You could even carry around a greataxe for greater damage in times when reach isn't necessary or helpful.

Try a half elf dual cursed oracle(deaf +wolf scarred mouth) of life.

Take paragon surge and eldritch heritage (arcane) to grab a thrush familiar to deliver touch spells and UMD scrolls and wands for you

1 person marked this as a favorite.

An Oracle can have any mystery and still operate in melee. Divine Favor and Divine Power are available to any Oracle, as is using decent combat stats.

Kindred Raised Half-Elf gets +2 to both STR and CHA, and can use the Ancient Lorekeeper Archetype for arcane buff spells and offensive spells.

In Carrion Crown, you face plenty of undead and negative energy beings. Just make sure you have Channel revelation. If you want to be super offensive, get Reach Spell and nuke enemies from afar with Cure spells. Even when you're not fighting negative energy beings, Reach Cure spells save lives (and your own! because you don't have to run 100ft through AoO boulevard to get there ;P).

Carrion Crown ends around 15-16ish, so at level 13, you could pick up Dreamed Secrets and get a couple of Arcane spells like Disintegrate and Firesnake.

Edit: I would not try to make a melee build that uses weapons and go with Blackened Curse btw.... If you're going Blackened for the Nuking spells (which I would recommend), then just pump your Dex up a bit and make sure you get a decent bonus to land those Scorching Rays and Reach Cure spells.

One stylish tactic for an Oracle is to grab Exotic Weapon Proficiency: Estoc and Amateur Swashbuckler: Dodging Panache, plus a Swashbuckler's Flair: Blue Scarf. Blue Scarf makes the powerful Estoc a reach weapon, while Dodging Panache lets you add CHA to AC while getting a free short move to keep foes at a distance.

Ancient Lorekeeper could be run something like:

Kindred-Raised Half-Elf: 15/17STR, 13DEX, 14CON, 10INT, 8WIS, 15/17CHA
Traits: Fate's Favored, Magical Lineage: Fireball

1. Selective Channel
3. Exotic Weapon Proficiency: Estoc
5. Amateur Swashbuckler: Dodging Panache
7. Power Attack
9. Empower Spell

Grab Burning Hands, Scorching Ray and Fireball as your bonus spells, and Heroism as your level 10. Then you can use your level 4 slots for Divine Power and Heroism and your level 5 slots for Empowered Fireball.

Life oracle with the shaman life spirit would pretty much cover all healing needs with selective channel then it would leave your spell slots open for self buffs and the rest of your feats open for combat stuff.

I'm only allowed 15 pt buy. The race is going to be pre-chosen. It hasn't come up yet what it'll be unfortunately.

Yikes. 15 point isn't too bad, but I'd hold off on making any elaborate plans until you know the race.
