This happens sometimes. Sphinx was also a singular creature from Greek mythology, but the Greeks themselves used this name as a generic name for the creatures represented in the Egyptian statues. Also it's similar to like the name of Ceaser that became a title, or with the name of Charlemagne (Charles/Carolus/Karl) that became a name for 'king' in several languages ('król' in Polish, 'král' in Czech, 'король' in Russian).
I think that most mudusas wouldn't be much religious overall, and If they would even pick a god to worship, it would be determined by their personality, not their race. I don't even think that medusas have any racial diety. They could find worship of Asmodeus, Zon-Kuthon or Norgorber appealing, some of them could even worship Irori or Pharasma. More chaotic ones could worship Lamashtu or demon lords Abraxas.

I agree with not having a god. Based on the original myth, I could see the original medusa, having been raped by one god and cursed by another, one whom she pledged to serve, it makes sense that they truly HATE the gods.
100% agree with this, from the description of their Greek origins.
One of my players (my wife, actually) is playing a Medusa character in a custom campaign of mine and her Medusa tends more towards the True Neutral bit of the alignment perspective, though leans towards and actually venerates, Calistra. Somewhat due to the revenge aspect of the goddess and the history of the, rather unfortunate, interactions with men, she became a Hunter (complete with constrictor snake companion) that seeks out men who have fled their crimes and are hiding in the wilderness.
