There are a lot of threats on arcane casting. SoP is a popular addition to PF1. What would you have thought if it had been brought in as a core part of PF2?
That would be even worse than the current system.
Not that SoP is a bad system in itself. It's perfectly fine for an alternate system for those that like it, but it shouldn't be the default method of casting simply because it isn't D&D. I want D&D in my D&D.Bardarok |

Pathfinder is by definition not D&D. If you want D&D you should play D&D. 5e is a fine system or play 3.5 if you want.

I mean, Pathfinder isn't D&D either (though that may be quibbling.) I'm personally not a fan of Vancian casting and I think it kind of limits how you can do things in a system, but I do understand why the Paizo designers didn't swap to something else; there's already enough changes in the playtest that going that far could potentially alienate a lot of existing customers.
I think it would have been really cool to see spellcasting become something more in line with Spheres of Power or Paizo's own words of power greatly expanded.

I also think Spheres of Power did a better job of reigning in casters. You could have a wide variety of spell effects but they are all kind of weak or a limited number of spell effects and have them be strong. PF2 is railroading everyone into option 1 which is more balanced than PF1's wide variety of strong effects but probably less fun than just having a limited pool of powerful effects.

Having tried several times to wrap my head around Spheres of Power, I think I finally sort of understand it, but I'm unsure whether it would be a good move. Part of the complexity that SoP has, likely has to do with making it play nice with Vancian, and maybe if it were core to the system, it could be made more simple to read and comprehend, but there is a simplicity to just having a list of spells that have certain effects, and maybe have slightly different effects if heightened. And yeah, Pathfinder isn't D&D, and there are actually some places I wish 2e does move even further from D&D on, but SoP seems like better as a 3pp option, and stick with some variant of Vancian.

Well for one its a third party product. I would imagine once PF2 actually comes out the same 3rd party might make a updated SOP for PF2 but that would be mostly conjecture. It would be actually a little messed up for Paizo to steal there idea and incorporate it into there new product. when they can do what there gonna do and let them make an updated SOP.
