<snip> Back in '92, I was waiting for a table at a restaurant that didn't take reservations. Carl Sagan and his wife stroll in and ask for a table. The hostess tells them it will be 45 minutes, and Sagan says, "Do you know who I am?" When the hostess says, "no," Sagan demands to speak with the manager. The manager profusely apologies and tells them to wait a moment, and the two are seated within 90 seconds. While they were waiting, I muttered, "I guess you can always get table if you're rich and famous." Sagan heard me and gave me a sh!t-eating smirk as he went with the manager to his table. </snip>

Some of my college professors are "famous" and one of them had worked with Dr. Sagan early in his career (late in Dr. Sagan's career). Your story comports well with his opinion of the late Dr.

I like reading all the snippets in this thread about famous people who haven't let their success get the better of them.

Long time ago as a small-town reporter I interviewed Naomi Tutu, Archbishop Desmond Tutu's daughter. Which was awesome. Also met of course various high-up officials, senators, etc. I meet some "VIPs" in academia at work.

But the more sort of famous actorly/musician/writer sorts...

I sadly have no "random bump into" celebrity moments (save the time I nearly walked into Stan Lee, which I shared in the recent in memoriam thread; I didn't get to talk to him).

My mom and I once saw author Anne Tyler in a restaurant, but my mom didn't want to bother her. She wrote to her later and Ms. Tyler wrote back saying, "Please do say hello if you see me again." Which meant a lot to her. Sadly my mom died only a year or two later and never had another opportunity to meet her. I can be very gunshy approaching strangers (to the surprise of my friends who have forgotten what I am like at first blush), but I always hope I'll have the guts to at least say hello if I see someone I admire.

In formal autograph-line/con events...

- Coolest story was at Pittsburgh Comic-Con in 2002--I went to the Xena Warrior Princess panel, which featured Alexandra Tydings (Aphrodite) and Claire Stansfield (Alti), and the dude who played Salmoneus (I've blotted his name out, as I remember thinking he was a jerk). During the panel, the actors wanted to show us how they rehearse/read-through parts and asked members of the audience to volunteer to play their parts. Everyone was too intimidated to volunteer for Alti! So I volunteered (I was terrified and shaking like a leaf, but I did it), and Claire Stansfield gave me tips on doing the gritty evil Alti voice. (She obviously doesn't sound like that in real life.) That was cool! So I also got in the autograph line to have a record of what happened, so to speak, and they wrote nice things to me on my autograph sheet. Stansfield and Tydings were very sweet. No, they're not massively huge celebrities, but they're sure as hell more famous than I am.

- I went to a small Doctor Who con, and the autograph area was right inside the dealer's room, and I went in quite early in the morning. I suddenly realized I was standing right next to Deborah Watling's (Victoria from the 2nd Doctor era) table. She had just set up her autograph table and no one was getting in line yet--I hadn't been planning on getting an autograph from her, but something told me to take the opportunity while I could, so I chatted with her a bit. I babbled, honestly, mainly about the weather (I was nervous), and eventually mentioned a scene I really liked her and Patrick Troughton in and was glad they found more of the episodes she was in (this was right after some new film of the 2nd Doctor eps had been sound). She was very gracious and sweet. I felt bad for babbling, but as I said to myself later, I had said hello, please, thank you, and had showered that day, so that probably put me in the top 10% of those fans she met that day. She only died about a year or so later, and I think that was the last time she came to the States, so I'm glad I talked to her.

- Same con I also got an autograph from Sophie Aldred, in part to get a present for my sister. I told her she was a big inspiration to me when I was a tween. She was super energetic and kind (and happy to wish my sister a happy birthday).

- I've met Gail Simone, the comic writer, in a couple of autograph lines. She is super duper lovely and down to earth. One time my friend tried to chat with her husband to give me time to talk to her (which was very nice of him to do) though I was more sort of "herp derp I like your books!" and wanted to get out so I wouldn't hold the line up.
