Fatigued too harsh on barbarians

Classes

Hey everyone. First a disclaimer, I have yet to play the barbarian in the playtest, but I'm currently building a Barbarian/Paladin for Heroes of Undarin (or just a general concept really) and while some of the features might be a little lackluster, overall it seems like a fun enough guy to play.

My issue is on the fatigued condition following raging.
Since every fourth round is you fatigued, chances are it will happen quite a lot in most fights, since at that level it's hard to finish fights that quickly. I could choose not to rage until the fight is close to over, but that doesn't really seem fun.

Looking at fatigued it seems to almost cost you your entire round, because taking any actions might be more punishing than it is rewarding. So a proposed change could be to only let certain actions like Striding and Striking (or attacking with spells, etc) increase the fatigued modifier. Because overall I wouldn't mind the barbarian needing a breather and perhaps using this time for some self-heal with Lay on Hands or drinking a potion, or even raising a shield if he was carrying one. It does seem off that something "easy" as stepping or enjoying some magical juice should be as taxing as swinging your axe, and it feels bad that defensive actions might be more costly than just standing still.

How do you guys feel about the situation? And do some of you have playtest experience with how punishing fatigued actually is?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Tireless rage at 17th level removes the tirdness of the rage; but yes I agree it is a pretty harsh bonus only removed at endgame.

If rage were to last for 1 round PLUS your constitution bonus or something you could extend your rage significantly enough so you are fatigued less in most longer fights - but still enough to make Tireless Rage feat still viable.

on a pure amusing level... the fatigued aspect made the barbarian in our campaign have something to rage about :P

Just out of interest, did he use any actions on his fatigued turn? And if so what did he do?

Well that would make it 4 turns until level 5 or 10 and then 5 turns. Not the biggest change. Honestly I really don't mind the on-off rage system with 3 turns in rage and 1 in fatigued. I just feel like fatigued is too harsh a condition because taking actions is just asking to get critted. :(

Well might feel better in playtest than in theory.

Played a Barbarian now twice since I had to let my first character go in this campaign I am in. Level 3 Goblin Dragon Barb Fighter Dedication 18 Str 16 Dex 12 Con (yea yikes I know!) and Toughness for a 20 AC (Chainmail) and 49 HP. Gonna pick up Double Slice next level.

I have become fatigued in 2/3 Fights so far. It has not been a big deal to me either. Move, Attack at -1, Attack at -2. Have -3 AC till next round. Rage again. Might be the party composition but with the Paladin and Cleric having a low AC for one round and really drawing that Retributive Strike for the Pally has been pretty good. Cleric is basically ready to drop a heal by round 4 anyways.

Edit- Changing Rage to 1+Con Mod rounds would suck for characters like mine. 3 Rounds at a time is fine but a +1 bump at levels 5, 10, and 15 wouldnt be a bad idea.

I feel fatigue is fitting but should be redefined. Instead of increasing when you do something, it should be more static.

Fatigued 1: You are slowed 1 and take -1 to checks/AC.

Fatigued 2 (Exhausted): You are slowed 2 and take -2 to checks/AC.

Fatigued 3 (Shock): You are slowed 3 and take -3 to checks/AC.

Fatigued 4 (Collapse): You are unconscious.

So fatigue from rage would just be Fatigued 1, but actions during that round would not make you more fatigued.

Maybe give the Barbarian the option to keep pushing their rage past 3 rounds, but they start acquiring fatigue at 1 step per round even while the rage is up, then it increases by 1 when the rage is over and lasts 1 round longer per round the rage was extended.
