Do you need to signup to a third party site if you bought the boxed edition

Owlcat Pathfinder CRPGs

I don't know what Steam or GoG are. (I presume sites where you download computer games).

Am I going to need to sign up for that if I have a boxed edition on the way?

I'm honestly shocked there is a 'boxed edition.'

But you'd be better off asking on the kickstarter page or backer portal or whatever. No one from Owlcat is here for technical questions.

But I suspect the answer is yes. Even in the unlikely chance there are disks in box rather than just a code (the preload is 20.9 Gigabytes, so very unlikely, even beyond the pointless cost of printing disks), you'll need some functional way to get updates and patches.

Ah, I see. Thanks.

That’s disappointing, though not really surprising.

Can't they just mail us floppy disks with patches? Or have them included on cover CDs of monthly magazines? ;-)

It depends. If the box mentions something about Steam, you will have to sign up and have it running in the background.

Good Old Games (GOG.com) has a similar platform, but it is entirely optional. The installer packages you download there are DRM-free.

If you’re talking 5 inch floppies (ie actually floppy) then you’re speaking my language.

Ah, okay. Thanks. I’ll wait until it arrives, I guess and see how easy it looks.

If you're feeling peckish, I have a fat stack of BeOS and OS/2 Warp 3.5 diskettes for you to munch on.

You newfangled whippersnappers ... I was talking 200mm ... oh bugger, have it your way, 8 inch floppies! Mark my words, those 5,25 inch ones are just a silly fad that will be gone tomorrow.

Hey. You were right!
