Would anyone be interested in playing (or running) Waterdeep: Dragon Heist as an Adventurers League game?

Definitely down for playing. I could run something closer to November or December.

I'd be game, except for the AL part, which I'm not familiar with. Can you clarify what it entails?

Liberty's Edge

I wouldn't mind playing.

AL is like DnD's version of society play. So there are rules on how to build your character, alignment restrictions etc.

You can find it on the DnD website

Thanks Sethran, so there's no subscription requirements? I'll try to find the website and have a look.

No subscription necessary!

Three is minimum table size, so we can absolutely do this. Ideally, I would like to run this once for each season / villain. But that means that it will have to be different PCs. What that will likely mean, is that if we fill up tables, I can run the overflow on another season.

Of course, this is an interest check so I am going to leave it open for a little while.

@Mishima, maybe if you run it in November, I would love to play. As long as you don't mind someone that has run it playing. ^_^

I'd be VERY interested in playing this adventure. Just getting into AL so that's a plus also.

Grand Lodge

I will try to answer any questions that you all have about Adventurers League. Having just moved to a checkpoint advancement system, people coming from Pathfinder Society may have a little better adjustment to the new system.

I'm down, and have multiple characters. What is the level range?

I would be interested in playing some 5e. ant this looks like a great adventure.

Pathfinder Rulebook, Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

Interested as well!

Grand Lodge

@Vrog, it is for levels 1-5. Kind of like a new starter option.

I'd be interested. Looks like it could be fun. Level 1 start or can we bring existing characters?

Grand Lodge

I think it will be the best experience if no characters over 2nd level, or 3rd at most (if they take slow progression a couple of times to let the others catch up).

If you have a pre-existing Adventurers League character, run it by me first and I will discuss with you how to make it work if you really want to play that character.

Also interested.

Okay, so I have a 2nd level barbarian, but I can just as easily roll out a first level character as well.

Seems like 9 interested players. I can bow out and wait til later this fall when I run something if needed.

I'll go ahead and put a wizard together just in case.

Hmm, are monster races dead in season 8? You cant +1 both the required faction background from SCAG and a monster race from VGM at the same time. What am I missing? Did they get rid of faction reqs for monster races?

Or nevermind, answered my own thing...background features don't follow the +1 rule.

Here's my alias/crunch but like I said I'll drop out of there's more than 7 subs by the time you start.

Shal is 3rd level, so to keep things simple I'll just go ahead and save her for another game. Looking at trying a bard in this one. Will try to have stats up later today or tomorrow.

I'm waiting till the DM makes the actual thread before I create any character. Only one question. Since AL changed the leveling system, so that books are now done by time instead of experience, I assume you will have a plan laid out that says we level up when or compare it to other table-top groups as to what page they were on at the 1 hour mark and so on.

Here is Tareth's alias if you decide to move forward with this.

DoubleGold, there is no official guidance on PbP, but in the past they have released content catalogues with a stated "hours" to use for such situations. I have not seen the season 8 catalog but I assume it exists somewhere (not in the DMs pack I downloaded for some reason).

Grand Lodge

Yes, I will be calculating an approximate time per chapter, factoring for 4 hour sessions (approximately a month of gametime, depending on how fast we post and respond.)

@Mishima, there are a couple of things. I may run this as two tables, since we have a good 9 players, and run two separate villains, one in each thread.

You may have gotten the wrong AL pack, or checked too early, but this one has the content catalogue 8.03:

I am going through my stuff right now to figure out how and when to start this...

Also, if you guys can sound off on your post rate commitment, that will help me arrange tables.

I believe my profile should be good? This is HatersInHeaven's applicant Damine Nithrissa, the Tiefling Hexblade Warlock.

Also, I can post usually 1-2 times per day.

I can usually post once per day, sometimes more. Mornings (US West Coast) are typically when I'm on and posting.

Grand Lodge

My time zone usually messes people up, being in Hawaii and all. I am 3 hours behind West Coast (2 hours after DST goes away.)

You probably know my pace by now, but its definitely dependent on the group. As long as something responds to me I can post quite a few times a day.

Aye, I do. Poor Ravvek, an empty husk... ;p

I can usually post once a day, except weekends.

I'm not entirely sure I'll join. AL seems like way more trouble and info to digest than what I'm looking for.

I guess it's best not to count on me.

I'll get something made when you have thread up. I assume you don't have the book yet, as it is suppose to come out on the 18th, and you may or may not need a day to review it all.

I can make up a fighter or barbarian or even a Ranger what ever you would prefer in a day or two.

If you are going to run two tables, I'll jump back in. Didn't want to take a spot from someone else though!

@Dreaming Warforged: It's really not a lot of work. There is a limit on what you can use to create your character from that's not tied to the PHB, but other than that it's basically registering on a website and then a bit of paperwork at the end of the scenario/adventure.

and I can make whatever the group needs: healer, sneaky guy, blower-upper guy, tank...

I have a rogue with the City Watch/investigator background who is a member of the Waterdeep City Watch. I made him for season 8 and have only run him through one scenario so far (DDAL08-00 Once in Waterdeep) so he's still level one by the new progression rules.

Since there is already a Warlock in the Mix I'll probably go Fighter.

I'm making a Ranger, Ranged fighter or Rogue, but I'm definitely going to be using a Bow/Crossbow

I can post 1-3 times a day, PST. I might try something new maybe a caster Druid.

Grand Lodge

@Dreaming Warforged, Like Vrog said, it is not too difficult and easier now to track. There is a bigger adjustment for people going from Season 7 to Season 8 than there is for someone coming in new. We are all here to answer questions, if you have them!

@DoubleGold, I technically have the book (I bought it from a game store on Oahu at FLGS release) and looked through it, but am letting my friend borrow it, since he is planning to run it. My plan is to purchase it from D&D Beyond, because I have found that having access to that is AMAZINGLY helpful when running a PbP campaign. I also like that it is shorter than most, aiming for lvls 1-5.

@Blaq Foxx, Did you not finish DDAL 08-00? You should be level 2, if you finished both part 2 and part 3. If you did not defeat one of those two, then okay, got it! It should be fine, I might request that you take slow progression after one session to let the others catch up, but it is not necessary if you are still 1st.

Remember, everyone, since we will have two tables, we can take two of everything without overlap. (Though ideally, I would like to separate the tables based on backgrounds more than classes.)

Ok, I'll look further into AL, but I'm not promising anything at this point.

First question: registering seems optional. Is it the case? If not, where do I do so?

Thinking of a Watherdavian Noble, perhaps a cleric...

Grand Lodge

Registering is optional. If you want to get a DCI you can go:

Ok, thanks!

For now, I'm thinking of an old lady who managed to survive many years on the streets of Waterdeep, becoming Mother to the Waterdavian urchins. But a few weeks ago, she's had a profound crisis of faith and turned to Mask, who foretold her imminent death and offered to "help."

With newfound faith, she hopes to make a difference and deserve her nickname by toppling the status quo and improving the lot of those left to fend for themselves in the deadly streets of Waterdeep.

In short: Female, Half-Elf, Cleric of Trickery.

Also, give me you favorite Season of the year: Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter.

It will help me split up the tables...

EDIT: Background & favorite season.

Background: Spy. I also put a few brief background bullets in my profile.

Season: Spring or Fall, are my preferred, but any works.

Liberty's Edge

I’ll look to play a Drow Paladin, looking to go Oath of the Conqueror.

Background will be faction agent (Lord’s Alliance)
Favourite season is Winter
