Monks and spears

Silver Crusade

Has anyone found a way for a monk to use a spear with their flurry/unarmed proficiency level? I can't seem to find it and I'm trying to build something akin to an aiel from wheel of time. Seems like spear is a very traditional weapon a monk might be able to learn. Thanks

I don't believe there is currently a way for a monk to be good with weapons that don't have the monk trait.

Sure there is. Just use it for every other strike than flurry.

At untrained proficiency? That doesn't count as "good."

It isn't hard to get trained via ancestry or general feats or multiclassing, though. Don't think you can get expert though, which hurts a little, but weapon properties can make up for a lot.

The Weapon Expert feat (Fighter Dedication 12) on page 281 gives you expert proficiency with any single weapon group.

I really am having a hard time understanding why Monk Weapon Profs require a Class Feat in the first place. Precedent has been that they have always started with them, and then are allowed to expand what they consider Monk Weapons with optional Feats and other Class abilities.

I hardly think allowing Monk Weapon Training for free and turning the Monastic Weapon Training to let a Monk Choose a Weapon Group to count as Monk Weapons is game breaking...

Because apparently monks shouldn't contribute at all to distance or flying encounters. Just stay put and be ready to punch.

I feel like I have explained this before...

It is most likely because flurry is now a single action that has no bearing on the full round. This means it is possible to strike with a better weapon and then flurry, for example. Which would have perpetuated a reoccurring problem with PF1 monks: not using weapons was suboptimal.

So now they have an entry cost to use weapons, but you then get the full benefits of flurry with them and such. At least, I'm pretty sure that was the thought process.

I'm not especially happy with the results, though. Monks at least need ranged options out the box. I think my preference would be make monks experts at unarmed at level 1 instead of 3, and let them be trained in simple weapons.
