Removing a curse (Lesser mummy rot)

Monsters and Hazards

Am I missing the rule for this? I've checked the Afflictions section of the playtest rulebook, and can't seem to get a clear answer as to how to remove a curse. This is especially the case in the Lesser mummy rot instance, where it is both a curse and a disease. Players need to remove the curse before they can cure the disease.

As far as I know, it's only through the Remove Curse spell. If I remember correctly, it's a 3rd-level spell, which means no players will have access to it. They would probably have to pay for spellcasting services in a town to get Mummy Rot removed at this level. So, for the purposes of the playtest, it might as well be permanent.

Edit: After taking a quick CTRL-F through the rulebook:
Remove Curse is a 4th level spell.
Curses can also be removed by some other class feat options, such as a Paladin's Lay on Hands or a Cleric's Channel Energy, though not until at least character level 8.
There is an uncommon item that removes curses called Panacea.
...And that appears to be it. Characters playing In Pale Mountain's Shadow are SOL.

That's what I was worried about. I'll be running In Pale Mountain's Shadow, and even though its a one shot, it feels pretty harsh.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Thankfully, the lesser version (that the Mummy Guards inflict) at least, doesn't seem to do much, especially if you're not a bard or sorcerer.
Would you be able to stay in a holding pattern of being at stage 1 of the affliction by passing the fort saves? After your initial fail to contract it of course.
Either way seems, tedious to have to constantly roll every minute/day. Imagine taking a rest after the mummy fight and potentially having to make 540 rolls over the 9 hours of rest then daily prep...

Are there rules that curses need special remove curse magic to remove? I couldn't find that. As far as I can tell, curses can be removed with a simple dispel magic, since there's nothing about the curse trait which says otherwise.

Dispel magic specifies that it only works on a spell effect or unattended magic item. The mummy's curse is magical, but not a spell effect AFAIK.

Ah. I was looking at the curse spells, which it would work on.

So, what is the final answer? Does it end after recovering below first stage? What about curses that do not have stages?

Based on my reading of RAW you have the chance to end it with just a successful save on stage 1 as is the usual case of afflictions.

So the trouble of mummy rot being both a curse and a disease is only applicable if you try to cure the disease in other ways; which is impossible to do until you dispelled the curse.

HMM... I had been under impression 2nd Edition was all about removing all the finicky distinctions between magical effects...

AKA if it's magic, it's a spell (although that doesn't require it use mechanics of spell CASTING). ...???
