Hope your Sharu battle went well. I have a party of 5 and the vesk soldier went down hard. Sharu almost dropped the android mechanic the round before. Some solid tactics and a well timed max damage magic missile barrage took down Sharu to exactly 0 after 3-4 heavy damage rounds after a long multi-combat in-game day. Overally, folks seemed appropriately threatened. If it weren't for that huge magic missile, Sharu probably KOs at least one more PC with the vesk out of the way.

Sharu is a beast, to be sure, though not as bad as the Garaggakal. She killed two of my players with critical hits from her sword. They were wounded from the previous battles and - while they had done some healing - she did enough damage to kill one outright and the other died from the bleed condition.

Hey all! Just got the AP for free on Roll 20 and I plan on running the AP next week. One of my players would like to play a race with a 30ft fly speed, my question to the group is, are there any encounters in Book 1 that are broken by having a Fly Speed?

I don't think so. The first book has a lot of encounters out-of-doors but all enemies have ranged weapons and lots of opportunities for cover. After that it's a lot of "dungeon crawl" style layouts. The choice of a race with a fly speed would be rewarded but not overpowering.

Something to consider:

Spoiler:

The first half of the first book is a bit of a sandbox involving an occupied town. A PC with a fly speed could be very effective at running messages and scouting, but without support from the other PCs probably can't be very effective at combat alone. I don't think a PC with a fly speed would break anything.

The Azlanti showed up with several drones with fly speeds - if the PC is being very problematic to them, they'd probably have the drones ambush that PC - or follow it back to where the other PCs are hiding and dispatch a squad.

Also, remember that when flying, no race (even perfect manueverability ones) can hover and full attack without haste.

What to do with Sharu's sword? My group just killed her, but not after she downed two of them, it was a rough fight.

My group are a bunch of murder-hobos so I know they have their eyes on her sword, and her rifle. These are pretty powerful items, a little too powerful for level 3 PC's?

They have avoided looting Azlanti so far because I emphasize how the equipment if very specifically and identifiable as Azlanti. However, I do not think that will keep them from using Sharu's loot!

How have you handled this?

Her sword is perfectly appropriate for level 3 PCs. Don't worry about them grabbing it.

Sovereign Court

Defeating enemies and taking their powerful gear is absolutely intended.

One of the ideas behind giving items a level in Starfinder is to indicate that if you want to just buy (without any dangerous adventuring) an item, you have to wait until that level. But if you actually go out adventuring, you can find some powerful stuff earlier. After all, if the stuff you could buy in the shop was just as good as the stuff you had to do a difficult fight to get, the loot from that fight would be very disappointing.

Thanks for the responses. I just thought a +12 sword may be too OP for 3rd level characters, but I trust you guys. Thanks!

It's not a '+12', it just does 1d10+STR+SPEC in the hands of a PC, and has the called and dispelling fusions on it.

It did, they managed to scrape by with some tactical engagement. They sent the Dragonkin soldier through the middle door to get her attention while the Vlaka operative sneaked around the western side to get a flanking position. They focused on taking down the adds with the Envoy's "Get 'Em" while the Dragonkin kept Sharu busy.

The Dragonkin did end up using almost all of the serums of healing found in the medbay, and he did eventually get knocked out after a chunk of his wing was cut off (a little something to remember the battle). Luckily, by then the adds were taken care of and the other two were able to finish Sharu off. Another close call for the group, but certainly exciting.

Yeah, you can't take the NPC block stats and transfer them directly to a PC. Since NPCs and PCs are built using different rules, you need to go back to the PC rules if one picks up a weapon used by an NPC.

The +12 takes into account her strength, specialization, and general challenging-ness. It isn't a +12 sword... in fact, Starfinder doesn't even have innate damage bonuses on magical weapons the way Pathfinder did.

Tiny detail that I found confusing: The book says that the southern door of the Parept's Chamber on the Royal Venture is locked from the inside.

If that's true, how did Sharu and her cronies get through? I assume they wouldn't have locked it from the outside after passing through since that would just trap them inside the front half of the ship.

I chose to simply mention that the doors have locks, but left both unlocked.

Good point! I figure the robot may have locked the door behind them?

I'll add my interpretation to an old thread, in case others are still just getting around to running this adventure path like I am. At the time Sharu and crew went through the engine room (N3), they simply went through the south door, down the southern corridor through the cargo area (N7) and up to to the bridge (N12). The Engine Room description says

Engine Room description wrote:

An area at the eastern end of the room contains two doors. The north door appears intact while the east door is askew in its frame. What was once a door to the south is now nothing but charred slag, destroyed in an explosion that seems much more recent than the other damage to the room.

and the text afterward mentions
Reach of Empire page 31 wrote:
The southern door recently led to the starboard walkway, but it was destroyed in a blast by an overloaded engine when Lieutenant Sharu brought the ship’s power back online.

I created a couple of player handouts.

If Quorsica trusts the players, she can give them a map based on her memory of having been in the garrison.

If the players hack or get the Royal Venture's virtual intelligence, Ellioch to assist, they can get a map of the ship.

I've placed these images in a google drive folder
