How are you supposed to use Hero Points with skills when many skill rolls are done secretly by the GM?

Hero points allow all characters to reroll d20s. The problem is, many skill uses have the secret trait, so you never actually see your skill roll to know if you should reroll it. Hide and Sneak are probably the most prominent of these, since they'll be happening regularly for ranger and rogue characters. Is it intended that these skill uses just can't benefit from hero points?

That's a really good point.

My solution is to not have hide and sneak as secret rolls. 90% of the time the player immediately knows anyway (because the enemy attacks), except for that 10% where the enemy pretends he doesn't know and does something sneaky. In that case, the GM can always ask to do a secret roll.

Secret rolls in general are too onerous on the GM, I already roll enough, I already have too much to do. I particularly don't want to roll everyone's Recall Knowledge checks, especially now that they only take 1 action each.

You are not. It says in the secret rules that you cannot apply anything that is not currently active.

That is not the exact language, but that is the definite intent. I asked John Compton at GenCon this very question and that was his answer.
