In the current playtest rules, prices of mundane items are given in silver pieces (sp) and prices of magic items are given in gold pieces (gp). Because they differ by only a factor of 10, it is easy to confuse them and not realize that the prices are on different scales.

My suggestion is that one of the following should be done:

1) Give magic item prices in silver pieces so that everything is on the same scale, or

2) Give magic item prices in platinum pieces, or in platinum pieces and silver pieces if necessary for the cheaper items.

The advantage of giving prices in platinum pieces is that the 100 to 1 ratio between the coin values should make confusing them with each other far less likely.

I second #1. Put absolutely everything in silver.

i suspect the gp prices are supposed to be transferred entirely over to sp, or to pp for mroe expensive stuff as you suggest. it was likely just passed over while doing other stuff (one of those errors you see 400 times while editing and your brain just autocorrects for you).
i do hope it's all converted over in the updated/final release.

Scarab Sages

Whatever prices are in, we can handle decimal points - we do it with real money all the time

I am in the 'use silver for all prices' camp. I am okay with making Golarion use the silver-standard, but I think the developers need to start thinking in silver too.

As it is it feels like all of the GP priced items are too expensive (by degrees). The prices look reasonable at a glance, but when you account for the various conversions taking place, the prices didn't actually change as much as they appear to. The lowest-level magical items tend to be much cheaper than their classic equivalents, but with the mid-to-high-level magical items they tend to significantly exceed their classic prices (again, after accounting for various conversions).

Alchemical items also saw an extreme inflation in prices if we account for the conversions to sp. Making it prohibitive to actually craft (or use, or find) staples of utility stuff like a goblin carrying a few alchemist fires for alternate weapon and because "fire".

I mean, even at 3gp/bomb you would have to be a goblin king to lob those around...

Are gp still the equivalent of 10sp? Because that doesn't make sense to go 100cp=1sp but then only go up 10sp=1gp. It's similar to why electrum pieces got phased out.

It takes 10 copper pieces to equal 1 silver piece or 100 copper pieces to equal 1 gold piece. Each coinage step goes up by a factor of 10.

I'm a fan of using this.

12 gold, 4 silver, 5 copper. Works out perfectly in things like Excel, or even just a calculator.
