Starting Equipment Question: Scrolls / Wands / Elixirs?

Skills, Feats, Equipment & Spells

Hello everyone,

after reading the rulebook, I am not quite sure what equipment is available for purchase for newly generated characters. Only the equipment in chapter 6, or everything in the book that is common equipment, which would include potions, scrolls and elixirs?

Grand Lodge

For Doomsday Dawn? I believe anything common is available, and any uncommons that a feature of your character makes available (such as uncommon ancestral weaponry if you took the right feats), within your budget, for the first module. The other modules (which are set at higher levels) have guidelines at the start of their section for GM's to pass along ahead of time.

For Org Play scenarios? John Compton was kind enough to sticky a thread in the Org Play Playtest forum for how to generate and gear up.

Thanks. For further reference, this is the thread: http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2v9cg?Creating-Your-Own-Playtest-Character

"Gear and Wealth: Your character begins with 150 silver pieces (sp) to spend as you like. Items with uncommon or rare rarities are not available unless you gain access to them with a character ability (for example, an elf with Weapon Familiarity gains access to uncommon elf weapons)."

As for Doomsday Dawn, the adventure states:

"PURCHASING GEAR
The PCs begin with 150 sp each. They
can purchase any common gear found
in Chapter 6 of the Pathfinder Playtest
Rulebook, along with any other options
they gain access to from their class and
feat selections."

So, anything that is NOT from chapter 6, like potions and scrolls, can not be bought according to the adventure rules. But then again, nobody prevents you from leaving the dungeon, buying the stuff in town, and then returning to the dungeon with potions and stuff. I am just not sure how Paizo intends the scenario to be played: With or without potions / scrolls?

My guess is that they were assuming that players would conclude that such things as minor healing potions (the most obvious magic item for a 1st level character to purchase) were too expensive to buy without having gotten some treasure from their first adventure.

The rules do address this, though not in a terribly satisfying way.

Playtest Rulebook page 174, first paragraph wrote:
Your character starts out with 150 silver pieces (sp) to spend on any common items from this chapter. Items with an uncommon rarity can only be bought with special access or GM permission. If you’re playing a spellcaster and want to buy magic items (like potions, scrolls, or holy water) or an alchemist and want to buy alchemical items, your GM can give you permission to buy those, and she will tell you which items you can choose from and how much they cost.

I would think that specific rules from the adventure would override the more general rules in the rulebook. OTOH, it's all playtest stuff, so who knows what Paizo intended.
