Do it the other way around. Roll the damage and then say what you think happened to the player. If you roll really heavy then yeah they landed head first. If they got off really light say they managed to roll with it a bit. If you rolled nothing but ones the player managed to crash into something soft.

You forgot to properly punctuate.
My suggested rule is that if you fall on your head you make a fortitude save or die. Realistically, you’d break your neck.
