Is PF2 what the beginners box should have been?

General Discussion

I mean are we are going to simplify everything just for the sake of simplifying? I am excited in one sense because I hoped PF2 would make it easier in leisurely play but starting to get cross-eyed in another wondering how stuff that was basic in PF1 got erased or mostly lost in the shuffle.

I believe 2E definitely borrows from the Beginner Box's graphic design, but to me that's really the biggest similarity.

Besides, the Beginner Box is what the Beginner Box should have been. It was (heck, is) a fantastic product.

Yesterday, Paizo announced at GenCon that a Starfinder Beginner Box would be available in Spring 2019.

I fully expect a PF2 Beginner Box to be made available a year or two after PF2 launches.

Beginner Boxes serve an entirely different purpose than Rulebooks: They give someone with no experience a limited taste of what the full game would be like. And they give someone with no experience a limited, carefully curated set of instructions on how to start playing, even if no one else around you knows how.

The Hero's Handbook is 64 pages, with an accompanying GameMaster Handbook of 96. The advancement information goes up to Level 5. The BB provides dice, minis, pawns, and maps. It is a starter set, not a rule set.

If a 400+ page set of rules is intimidating, it's going to intimidate you no matter how well-written and no matter how smoothed out the game flow is.

So, no. PF2 is not at all what the Beginners Box should have been, and I'm pretty sure there will be a PF2 Beginners Box produced in the next couple years.

I expect (and hope!) so.
