Recreating a Multiclassed Character (originally had 4 classes)

Creating a Character

Antal Waters is one of my favourite PF1e characters. He started out as a halfling bard and due to how subpar my initial choices were, he couldn't really keep up with other frontline fighters. With a friend's help we turned him around to be a very competent fighter who could hold his own with other fighters. He was a fully tanked up character and has the following classes and levels:
Bard 4 / Fighter 1 / Steel Falcon 2 / Dragon Disciple 4

Some people would look at the above and say that this character is a cheesy abomination. I'd argue that because of the handicap he started out with, the above was completely necessary (Steel Falcon 2 was also completely flavourful as he was a Chexalian halfling slave who was freed by an Andoran Knight. He served as the Andoran Knight's squire until the Andoran Knight died and he took up the Knight's blade to charge into battle).

So I'm going to try to recreate the character using the same initial setup (halfling bard 4, so no multiclassing before 4th level) and try to achieve a Halfling Knight who uses a greatsword. Due to the lack of options (because it's a playtest of 95% of a CRB) I'm willing to have Gray Maidens as a stand-in for the Steel Falcons.

Antal Waters - Halfling (Laborer a.k.a Slave) Bard 11
STR 19 = 10 + 2 (Class) + 2 (Background) + 2 (1st) + 2 (5th) + 1 (10th)
DEX 12 = 10 + 2 (Halfling)
CON 14 = 10 + 2 (1st) + 2 (Background)
INT 14 = 10 + 2 (5th) + 2 (10th)
WIS 18 = 10 + 2 (Halfling) + 2 (1st) + 2 (5th) + 2 (10th)
CHA 18 = 10 + 2 (Class) + 2 (1st) + 2 (5th) + 2 (10th)

Overall I'm fairly happy with this character. I'm in full plate and wielding a greatsword. The lack of Steel Falcon prestige archetype does hurt the concept of the character, but I can hardly blame Paizo for that (I decided against trying to use the Gray Maiden archetype as a proxy). The multiclassing for this character actually feels extremely satisfying. I quite like keeping full spell progression and still getting to be a martial character.

On a power level point I can hit a level 14 enemy on a +7/+12/+17 or a +13/+18 (depending on enemy). I am hit on a 7 or 12 (depending on enemy). Overall these are tough numbers, but these are level + 3 fights so I'm fairly happy with my power level at that. Compared with a human fighter, the fighter would have a +2 to their attack rolls more than me and +1 AC. That's not bad for a halfling bard wielding a greatsword!

The two biggest disappointments for this character is the lack of heal and the lack of alter self boosting his combat abilities. On the otherhand I do get to have a greatsword sized for a medium creature.

Overall I think multiclassing for this character is a complete success. What do other people think? Does Antal look a bit weak to you?

This is exactly what I love about the new system. The customization is IMMENSE. I don't understand why people keep saying it's "locked in" or "cookie-cutter". That character you made does not feel cookie cutter at all. It looks great to me.

It looks great.

Well, no, it looks small. Halfling sized.

But it looks cool!

I am quite pleased with Battle Cry and Quick Reversal. These aren't things that the original Antal could do, but they certainly fit his character. It's also a "what the hell" moment when this halfling bard suddenly turns around after missing someone and gets a free attack against someone else. It's definitely the "this aint your ordinary halfling bard" moment I've had at PFS tables when pulling out Antal and the first combat breaks out and I deal a truckload of damage to everyone's surprise.

The cookie cutter comes wwith things like fighter. Where you get legendary with heavy armor but not the others. Where you can only have legendary skills based on what class you have and your penalized in things like paladin if you go dex build your penalized because STR is your primary attribute and your armor proficiency focuses on heavy

Did I miss the Flaw for Strength in your build?

My understanding is that you can put your floating +2 into your flaw if you so choose (and thus cancel out the flaw). I believe the example in the playtest book has an elf who chooses not to have their CON flaw (and so doesn't get the floating +2).

It's more of a "You can apply the free +2 to the same stat as the set -2", but yeah, in the end it's the same.

Interesting build BTW!
Soon I'll try my hand on "Elfteiroh", my first AD&D2nd edition Elf Ranger character. (Half High and Half Aquatic, but for the playtest I'll let that slide, as anyway, for all intent and purpose beside my hair color, I was an High Elf)

In terms of healing, why did you not grab the 'Soothe' spell? It's not quite as good as Heal, but it's pretty solid single target healing for all that.

Because I didn't see it? Thanks for that.

With that in mind, spells would look something like this:

Spells Known
Spontaneous Heighten Spells: Dispel Magic, Soothe
Cantrips: Inspire Courage, Inspire Competence, Prestidigitation, Detect Magic, Message, Ghost Sound
1st Level: True Strike, Bless, Soothe
2nd Level: Blur, False Life, See Invisibility
3rd Level: Haste, Herosim, Dispel Magic
4th Level: Dimension Door, Fly, Modify Memory
5th Level: Tongues, Telepathic Bond, Heroism (believe this is the correct level from memory).
6th Level: Mislead, True Seeing

This is substantially closer to my Bard (casting cure spells in an emergency was one of his secondary roles).

Thanks. It was pretty easy to build in PF2e. Part of that is because I already had the blue print, another part of it is that I spent so much energy trying to make the character viable in PF1e where nowhere near as much work is needed for PF2e (assuming the above character is viable).

Given the nature of AD&D 2e I'd expect you to not have much trouble (I'd suggest multiclassing into a spellcaster at higher levels to get those AD&D 2e ranger spells back. Because of no druid multiclass you could use cleric as a placeholder).

That makes sense, I figured it might be that, or that you might have a specific reason. And you're quite welcome.

Great stuff John Lynch 106. Enjoyable thread, it actually highlights what we CAN do with the new system. That looks like an interesting character to play. Id be keen to see how he develops from level one as your playing.

Quick question, how long didi it take you to come up with the character. Ive seen a few threads complaining about the time needed to create a charactr

I won't be playing him unfortunately. I just converted an old character to see how it did. I'd rather play new characters. It took maybe an hour? Certainly less time then it did for PF1e.

That's good that you were able to recreate him. I don't think I can recreate my favorite character.

I played a character named Cade that was very impatient, very hyper, and wanted to learn everything. At the end of the game, she had 5 levels of paladin, 4 levels of bard, 4 levels of ranger, 1 level of wizard, and 2 levels of Horizon Walker. The level of wizard was about useless...she had around a 35% spell failure plus more because she always had a shield out.

I've played several different reincarnations of her...what she learns and takes depends upon where the game goes and the classes of her party members, so with each game she's a bit different.. She took the level of wizard after seeing the sorcerer in the party kick ass by casting a maximized fireball on a crocodile.

Since the only way to multiclass is by the dedication feats plus you have to gain two other feats in that line before you can take a new dedication feat, Cade is not possible in this edition of PF.
