Because they didn't like the choice of backgrounds in the playtest adventure.

Seems to me that they were probably looking for an excuse. My group really enjoyed character creation.

Campaign backgrounds are basically the same as campaign traits in P1e. Have they never played a Pathfinder AP before? Because those are pretty standard.

I'll admit these particular ones are not terrifically interesting ("I want to join prestigious club A," "I want to join prestigious club B," "I am a goblin"), but biting on the campaign hook is one of the main responsibilities of a player.

Keep in mind that you still get an additional trait to help round out your character in PF1e. "I can't be a friend of the family AND a former circus acrobat?" That's the sort of thinking that might occur


Only the Fighter in my group grumbled about the backgrounds. He wanted Family Friend, but the stat boosts did not suit him. He liked the Quick Repair feat, but of course he isn't a Goblin. The other three all had Lore backgrounds that seemed too obscure for his character to be interested in. He ended up with Pathfinder Hopeful, and is the only character with two Lore skills, which he finds amusing. When my old group used Background Skills in PF1, no one ever took Lore (well, except once) and they consider Lore in PF2 to be just as underwhelming and not worth a full Training pick.

The Half-Elven Rogue in my game balked at the restricted options, then got inventive. He selected Goblin Renegade and explained to me he had acted as the goblin's fence and provisioner (someone had to do their buying and selling), but Drakus was a no good so and so, and he quit working with Drakus but kept in touch with some of the goblins.
