Female Human Witch 3 / Rogue (Poisoner) 1

She sighs. "My options are limited, given what the herbalist has available. Arsenic is openly sold to kill vermin; it would weaken but not kill men. The symptoms are similar to cholera so the incident might not even arouse suspicion -- unless we wished to implicate the Desnans in the affair. Alternatively, I could mix up some belladonna which would impair the soldiers' strength but is not lethal. Oil of taggit is a lovely concoction but takes effect more quickly, and all it does is induce unconsciousness. Introduced at the right moment, it could make our incursion into Balentyne far simpler -- but our allies would have to be ready to strike."

Bostarg muses a moment before suggesting "Arsenic I would think best." raising an eyebrow to allow Tatya to overrule him if she thought different.

Female Human Witch 3 / Rogue (Poisoner) 1

She shrugs. "Then there is nothing to do but purchase it, in sufficient quantities. You don't need me for that, simply a story of rat infestation. If you wish to implicate the Desnans, however, we ought to wait until they have a grudge against the Iomedaeans -- or, at the very least, identify who among the Desnans we wish to have known to have rat poison on hand to which he might turn when wronged. In the meantime, I will see to the bloodroot."

As Morthos reverts to his "other" self, he heads out looking for his soldier "buddies". Ah yes, I enjoy nothing more than to act like a complete fool for this pathetic town. Morthos thinks to himself sarcastically.

Mother Ryanne sends word that she would like a meeting with you about your donation. She invites you to attend sermon on 22 Pharast, and to a meal afterwards to talk.

Let me know if there's any preparations you'd like to do first.

Doing these posts separate for easy quoting if needed, more to come.

King of Talingarde

Jed/Aedorn

You spend the night at the brothel. Over the course of the evening you see many faces come in and out of the business, attempting to find several of them.

Between overheard conversations, attentive observations, and idle pillow talk you manage to acquire the identities of several of the visitors.

  • Dugg - One of Captain Barhold's men. Quickly moves to the gambling tables. Gets drunk and loses everything, eventually makes a scene and quickly gets tossed out. You manage to overhear two people talking about how he loses everything almost every week.
  • A man named Peat, who you notice stashes a symbol of Desna in his pouch as he comes in. Goes straight to Donnur before disappearing with a girl
  • Brie - A local shopkeep, she spends a bit at the tables, mostly spending time drinking at the bar. Eventually speaks with Donnur and heads into back room
  • One particular girl, Lir, working at the brothel you find out is a servant at Balentyne during the day. Supplements income working here on off days.
  • Franz, one of Captain Varning's men, drinks and partakes of other goods.

Dice rolls:

1d20 ⇒ 11
1d20 ⇒ 17
1d20 ⇒ 5
1d20 ⇒ 10
1d20 ⇒ 17

King of Talingarde

Skorm/Alazandaru

Over the course of a few hours, you fail to learn much from the townsfolk about Varning's routes, but from your talks with the soldiers you manage to get enough information to piece together probably dates of departure and return.

Dice:

1d20 ⇒ 2
1d20 ⇒ 14

King of Talingarde

Terrick/Morthos

Having a meal with the soldiers you're able to learn that the soldiers use ravens to transport messages to and from distant locations, though they do occasionally send out couriers. The hilly terrain in the area makes mounted travel not as quick as desire which is why the ravens are the primary method. The raven keeper, a man named Mad Martin, is a bit of an oddball.

Dice:

1d20 + 11 ⇒ (8) + 11 = 19

King of Talingarde

Supplies to make the poison can be purchased at the alchemists shop in Aldencross.

Smiling at the news, Jonas mentally steels himself for the meeting - and upon the 22nd of Pharast expends a scroll to scour the taint of evil from his spirit. Using scroll of undetectable alignment.

He then returns word by the same courier that he would be pleased to attend.

His work on the journal continues, going back a few months in the blacksmith's hand to more adequately paint a picture of a man succumbing to the lure of Varning's tongue and taint of Asmodean worship. Various threads of tales of atrocities committed during the patrols and sacrifices are laid down.

Under the guise of Sister Margoleine, Tatya visits the herbalist once more, seeking a treatment for some disturbing warts her employer's brother Jed has developed....

Will buy supplies for a single dose of bloodroot "today" and go to Widow Dressler's to craft tomorrow, hopefully with Terrick carrying the liberated sword. I'll wait on the arsenic until we have a plan for when to use it, how to get it into Balentyne's food supply, and who to pin it on.

Returning to the room, Morthos shares what he has learned. "They use ravens as their messengers due to the terrain not being advantageous for horseback. Although, they do tend to use that on occasion. There is one by the name of Mad Martin that is apparently the keeper of the birds. That is all the information I was able to secure from these fools."

Yep. Terrick will be going with Margoleine.

Female Human Witch 3 / Rogue (Poisoner) 1

"'Mad Martin?'" Tatya repeats, a single questioning eyebrow raised. "Sounds promising. What can not plausibly be blamed on a previously-harmless-seeming eccentric?"

Nodding at Morthos "Good work... if he uses birds, then they likely have an aerie." musing "Tatya, what have you to kill a bird?"

Female Human Witch 3 / Rogue (Poisoner) 1

"A cat?" she suggests dryly.

Frankly, 3.x poisons are really bad at out-and-out killing things. IRL, a dose of poison that would sicken a man would probably flat kill x number of Tiny creatures (witness the canary in the coal mine), but you'd have to make up rules for it. Hit point damage is a lot more effective than ability damage in PF.

King of Talingarde

Hmmm, in the case of trying to kill lots of birds, I'd treat it like killing a swarm with poison. Treat it as 1 or more swarms of birds and deal the ability damage to the swarm. Enough con damage to kill the swarm kills enough birds to render it useless. A higher quantity would do the usual (increase duration and save DC I believe, though would have to look it up)

Morthos raises an eyebrow at the thought of wasting time to kill birds. "The ravens are of no consequence. I see no purpose in wasting our time and our resources on something other than the fools that reside within the keep. Tatya's poison has proven quite effective for us in the past. Let us not forget what it did to Odenkirk. Tatya and I will travel to this place we've acquired and make what needs to be made." Morthos then turns his attention solely to Tatya. "Gather what you need and let's move. The sooner the better." Morthos then grabs his gear and changes into 'Terrick' as he prepares to leave.

Hey, if you wear the stolen sword at your belt, you can use the iron circlet to make it appear different, too, per disguise self -- like an ordinary beat-up sword, for example. Probably the best way to carry it out of here, hiding it in plain sight rather than wrapping it up in a blanket and having an awkward bundle to draw attention.

Tatya nods and, with a sigh, resumes the appearance of Sister Margoleine. She places the herbs she purchased inside her cauldron and heads downstairs. Giving out the story that she's going out into the surrounding countryside looking for local herbs and seedpods she can preserve to take home with her to grow, she adds that her employer's guard Terrick is accompanying her to help assuage her fears. "I have never been so near the Watch Wall before," she explains truthfully. "The thought of what might be waiting on the other side, were not Balentyne here to protect the town.... You who are used to living here must think I am silly, but I feel safer with a strong sword-arm at my side."

22 Pharast 4712

Jonas approaches the Aldencross temple for his meeting with Mother Ryanne. Both between his approach and as he enters, he can tell work has been done on the temple. The soldier at the gate wears a well made outfit with nice trim, armor shined. The temple itself is in a similar state. While the priests earlier were indeed working hard cleaning the temple, it's obvious extra work has been done since.

The sermon itself is as expected, praising those who give of themselves to ensure order is maintained and the people protected. Yet the sermon is given with passionate words by Mother Ryanne. Your first time seeing the Iomedaen priestess, she gives an impressive speech. At first she appears rather plain, short cut brown hair and a face one would lose in a crowd. But then as she begins to speak, her passion for Iomedae shines through.

The crowd is enrapture from the moment she begins to speak, enthralling them all in even as simple topic as how they can each provide aid to the temple. Over the next hour her subtle wordplay, descriptive words providing the needed imagery, the church goers seem to feel a strong sense of loyalty, of dedication, of giving. As her sermon comes to an end, and donations are collected, Mother Ryanne moves about the crowd, giving thanks to many of those who have given. As this happens, Brother Ross comes up to you, "If you'd like to follow me, Mother Ryanne will meet with you in one of the private rooms in back. It should only be a few moments."

Assuming you agree.

Following Brother Ross, you are lead to a sitting room, sparsely furnished compared to many but comfortable enough for a temple. Tea and pastrys have been laid out. You are left for a few moments before Mother Ryanne shows up, still in priestly garb. "Welcome, Master Jonas, and thank you for coming."

I was trying to recall if you used Jonas or a different alias here. If it was different, please remind me.

Yep. That's what I was planning to do. I should've mentioned it but didn't. My bad.

Bostarg was indeed and is Jonas

Jonas sits through the sermon, listening intently to the words... not their meaning but more the manner in which meaning could be construed to serve other listeners. He acquiesces to the request of the Brothers, moving back to where he will meet with Mother Ryanne.

As Ryanne enters, Jonas stands and gives a slight bow "Your grace, thankyou for meeting with me. Might I pour tea for you?" gesturing to the pot on the table.

King of Talingarde

"That would be a pleasure, Master Jonas. Thank you." Taking a seat, she introduces herself, "As I'm certain you're aware, I'm Mother Ryanne, head of this temple. So I hear that you're a merchant traveling through town. I'm certain you must have some fascinating stories from your travels."

Not in use

Jonas carefully pours tea into both of their cups, filling hers first and then his own. Despite being calm of nerve he manufactures a slight tremor to his movements to imply that he is somewhat o'erawed "I have travelled yes, though what tales I can tell of long days upon the road and dust in ones face are hardly worthy of your ear." smiling slightly and haltingly "I have done well in trade... and have much to be thankful for. It is your work here that I would hear more of... and of the Singing Saints."

King of Talingarde

"Ah, the Singing Saints, truly worthy of praise." Settling back in, she begins speaking, "When I first came to Balentyne, I remember hearing them for the first time. Coming into the room, seeing the stony forms of the Iomedaen saints high on the choir walls, a breathtaking view. Especially for such a small church. But then the singing begins."

"Each member of the clergy learns the songs, of course. But in Balentyne they take it a step further, making it an art. So grand even the stone saints above join in, their music resonating with the clergy. It touches the heart. Lord Havelyn, Tacitus, the Captains, even Martin the Ravenkeeper comes to attend the ceremony every Sunday."

Sipping at her tea, you almost see a tear in her eye, "One of things I miss most about becoming matron of this temple is not hearing them sing. But my duties to Iomedae must come first. Which is why any help you can give will help us."

Sense Motive DC15:
While she is not intentionally hiding anything, she does know more about the Singing Saints she isn't saying.

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (13) + 14 = 27

Jonas senses that the matron is not telling everything that is known, he paints his face with reverential awe. Sighing contentedly he leans back in his chair and sips his tea "That would truly be a sight to behold... one that could almost sway my less than pious companions to more fervor." resting in his piety before a tinge of sadness "Why are you denied their splendour now your grace? Is there no chance that I could give penance in the chapel in which they sing?"

King of Talingarde

She lets out another sigh, "My duties here in town prevent me from attending services at the fortress aside from a rare occasion. But that does not mean you yourself must be denied it's splendor. I would be happy to send a request on your behalf to attend sermon, perhaps the 1st of Gozran? I would just need an account of who would choose to be attending. And perhaps after we could meet again to discuss it's splendor?"

Nodding his head in reverential acceptance "That would be most kind your grace... I have taken enough of your time though." standing and making to leave.

Ok - I've dropped the ball over the last little while and need to put up an action plan for the way forward... so KMV - could you please provide a re-brief on timing over the next weekish? What I'm interested in is:

  • Current day is 22nd of Pharast?
  • Expected arrival of play actors.
  • When the patrol captain is due to return / leave again.

We are running with the nascent plan I outlined before, what I'd like to do is a high-level run down of days and actions so we can railroad into something more interactive for everyone. Sound ok?

Female Human Witch 3 / Rogue (Poisoner) 1

And when's our deadline when we're expecting the bugbears in relation to the rest of it?

Big post is incoming in OOC, writing it as we speak... or you know typing it while we type... or I type at least... maybe it's best if I just... yeah... I'll go now...

King of Talingarde

Taking a few liberties.

Over the next few days, our villains set about instilling some dissension between the dominant members of the Iomedaen clergy and the large population of Desnans present in the community. At first the peace seems to be strong in the community, as little effect is apparent. But the sudden appearance of a new member in the church, one who may bring about a few changes seems to begin having some ripples appear. Nothing major at first, the two branches simply preferring the company of fellows a little more strongly. A few glances at each others direction. Talk of the church's future.

The first sign that something is noticeably wrong occurs on the 27th of Pharast. A few of the plants set about in people's minds have begun creeping out in minor form, but a definitive sign of one taking gives a dark hope. When collecting donations for the church, a small broken wooden longsword was found in the box. A heresy against Iomedae. Brother Addis, the one to discover it, made the mistake of exclaiming loudly his discovery, which Mother Ryanne quickly silenced. But the damage had already been done.

A schism had formed within the church. The prayers to the Iomedaens that night told a tale of temperance and peace, of standing firm in the Inheritor's glory but not to set aside others. The words were spoken with conviction, and some were calmed of their anger, at least for a moment. But later, when Desnan prayers were spread, Mother Ryanne was present as she often was, but for the first time in quite a while she did not sit alone, another member of the church at hand if needed. Her words helped to repair some of the damage, but not nearly all of it.

During the time before to now, Bostarg clothes himself in as close a faxsimile of one of the small folk he saw giving homage to Desna and is less than discreet in his quest to purchase a potion of spider climb. If questioned by the shopkeep he is purposefully vague as to it's usage, and quickly leaves the shop once the potion has been obtained.

28th Pharast:
As the day of Marlowe's arrival comes closer Bostarg calls council in the evening "Though we have begun to mingle, soon is the time to begin the dance. Tomorrow Marlowe arrives with his troupe, and I would hope there is much distraction because of it. We will use that as a means of clothing the first overt act."

"Alazandaru - your quest will be to ascend the tower Balentyne and end the pigeons in any way you see fit. Fire, knife, I leave the means to your discretion - but we need to render their ability to commune with the outside world to naught. I have purchased a potion to help the ascent, but rope should be brought to make escape if needed. Leave this wooden butterfly upon the roof in a place where it will be found.
Tatya, Morthos - while Alazandaru works above, you will need draw the eyes of the men upon the ground. Nothing overt, a dancing witch light upon the distance, or a horse or pig released to be restrained should serve.
I will be in town, attempting to draw as many eyes as I may upon me so that actions taken will be left unnoticed. Marlowe will likely be able to be drawn into some kind of speech or presentation I hope."

Female Human Witch 3 / Rogue (Poisoner) 1

Tatya narrows her eyes as she considers. "You want this distraction near Balentyne itself? Something to draw the men out of the watchtower, or merely to attract their attention? I have no skill at eluding pursuit or covering tracks."

Not in use

"Merely to draw their eye... whatever can be managed with little risk.

Thought dancing lights at max range would serve?

Female Human Witch 3 / Rogue (Poisoner) 1

I'm not really clear on how far it is from Balentyne to Aldencross and what the countryside is like between them. Are there any outbuildings or places to hide? How long will it take to get back to town?

She shrugs. "I'm assuming you want a distraction to the south and west while Alazanadaru climbs up from the south and east to attract the attention of the guards on the south wall away from the river and the tower?"

King of Talingarde

The distance between the two isn't clearly defined. It's listed as taking about 1 hour to get from Aldencross to Balentyne overland, but with the secret tunnel, that's a long distance. It does further say to clarify that the path zig-zags back and forth so it's not a straight shot, which is why an hour. There are places to hide on the approach, so that shouldn't be an issue.

Alazandaru

As evening was falling, Alazandaru found himself a lurk that was well enough away to remove any suspicion as well as provide vantage and access to the tower's wall. Once dark had arrived and the time was right - he approached the wall as stealthily as could be managed. Once able to put hand on stone, he quaffed the spider's brew and began to ascend...

Stealth: take 10 for 21 if possible? otherwise: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (11) + 11 = 22
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18

Bostarg

Meanwhile in town, Jonas sought the ear of the recently arrived Marlowe, patiently waiting as he dealt with any admirers, but still yet searching to be able to exchange words.

To the extent that this is dependent on Tatya and Morthos' Stealth rolls, it's not such a great plan. Dancing lights has a range of 130 feet, and she could cast from still farther back and still have the spell effect visible from the wall, so that's at least a +13 to the Perception DC for distance. :P

Tatya summons a glowing, devilish-looking figure between herself and the watchtower and lets it cavort across the countryside.

Stealth 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15

And you can do it from soft cover... another +4 :P

Seeing how this is going to be done stealthily, Morthos will leave his armor back at the inn. But not his weapon or his shield. His normal weapon that is, not the new fancy one. Which I believe we have hidden that, though. I think, anyway. I can't remember. :P

Morthos keeps an eye out for any wanderers just in case they manage to happen by as Tatya carries out their part of the plan.

Stealth: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23

King of Talingarde

As Alazandaru crests the top of the windowsill, his eyes adjust to the darkness within. Two dozen sets of eyes stare at him from around the room, ravens perched everywhere. The first sign of strangeness is that not a single one is caged. His nose assaulted by the smell of bird droppings covering the floor.

Off in a corner rests a man atop a small bed, apparently the tender of the ravens. He seems not to notice the intruder, a loud snore escaping him as Alazandaru pulls himself over the ledge.

As of this point there's about 24 birds in various stages of awakefulness and one sleeping human. It's room 43 on the map in the tower

Yes, I believe we hid the sword at the Widow Dressler's place. Also, Tatya would have made the unsubtle poison for Bostarg during the three days we skipped over. I believe she can't fail the Craft roll, but I need to subtract the cost of the supplies. Let me check back at what we decided to craft to frame Varning with, and I'll get that squared away.

"I wish we could set aflame a huge symbol of Asmodeus in one of these fields," Tatya murmurs to Morthos as her glowing marionette cavorts idiotically around the countryside. Having dealt with the human, Alazandaru's swift mind began to search for a way to hide the body as well as seal off the window so he could kill the birds without any escaping... He took his time and searched the place; and the man he had just killed, thoroughly.

Alazandaru is worried that they will see through the ruse as most Desnan's wouldn't be so extreme as to murder someone. Better if the man "disappears", even if he has to take the corpse with him.

King of Talingarde

There's not a lot of places in this room to hide a body, but just out the window there's a drop four floors down, then another 60 to the river below.

Mad Martin Rayard's gear:

  • padded armor
  • iron poker for tending fire (club)
  • wooden holy symbol to Iomedae
  • key to rookery
  • pouch full of bird seed
  • signal horn

Is there an actual cage, just not in use, or complete absence of one? If there is, Alazandaru will hurl the seed inside the cage and shut it once they are all inside. And then proceed to slay them in a controlled manner.

King of Talingarde

There are indeed cages, just not used.

Throwing the seed found on Martin, Alazandaru easily lures the birdes into cages. The birds are noticeably more timid with the death of Mad Martin, almost seeming to lose something with his death. The slaughter of the birds is an easy task, though with the death of the first they begin to caw.
