What I LIKE about the Playtest

Silver Crusade

Lots of people (including me) are posting negative comments. When we look at something new its easy to concentrate on things that we don't like.

So, I'm going to post some things that, at first glance, I LIKE about the Playtest version.

Feel free to chime in with happy happy joy joy thoughts :-) :-)

I need to see how it works in play but I like the new minion/familiar rules. Minions needed some serious reduction in power. We've all seen the Animal Companion leaving the poor martial in the dust.

I (mostly) like the fact that spells have been reduced in power. I think some went overboard but most nerfs were warranted.

I like the fact that at least the 1/2 dozen game breaking things I checked have gone. No more snowcone wish machines! Yay.

I like the fact that druids can no longer excel in quite so many areas (despite my playing druids the change is a good one). Now they have to choose between being a wild shaping monstrosity or a support for their animal companion :-)

Bards as full spell casters? Excellent.

Although I have some reservations, I generally like the approach taken to bounded accuracy. The differences between characters in terms of skill checks, saves, to hits, AC, etc remains reasonably small while the characters still noticeably get better in world.

Although I definitely want to see how it actually plays out I like the multiclssing rules.

There are a gazillion options that I miss but this IS the Playtest version of the Core rulebook. Expecting to be able to recreate my characters built from 50 splat books is just plain stupid.

I really like the idea of Bard being an Occult caster. It fixes some of the 'but arcane' arguments 3.X had.

I like how the feats have been more "streamlined" towards what a player would like. I quote that because the organization in the packet is absolutely horrid. What I mean about it though is it's not two whole pages of tables. I've had new players seriously take over 20 minutes trying to figure out what feat to take because they had zero clue as to what would even be considered useful to their character. This seems like it'll condense that amount of time by a lot by keeping a new player focused on the type of character they'd want to play and not be swallowed in a sea of options that don't help them. That make sense?
