Death and Assigned vs. Applied Chronicles

A situation came up in a game recently and we were all unsure of how to handle it. A player was running a Level Four pre-gen in a Tier 3-6 module, with credit being assigned to a Level Two PC. However, the pre-gen died. Questions that came up regarding assigned vs. applied chronicles:

1. Does the death of the pre-gen "transfer" immediately and kill the PC, or only when the PC reaches the same level as the pre-gen and gets credit applied (assuming they can't clear it)?

2. Can the death condition be cleared by a combination of the fame on the assigned (but not yet applied) Chronicle and whatever fame the PC already had?

The condition of death needs to cleared for the pregen or the 2nd level character is dead. It does hold until the level of the pregen.

The death condition can be clear using the prestige of the level 2 character. You can sell the gear of the pregen, which would likely be enough to pay for the raise death and restorations. The 2nd level needs to kick in something but I don't recall how much.

This is covered in the guide.

Okay, so the 2nd level character can keep adventuring until level 4 and save up the gold/prestige to pay for the raise dead once the pre-gen chronicle is applied?

I think Gary meant to type it doesn't hold. The death condition has to be resolved at the end of the module, otherwise the character is marked dead.

There's some good news, though. The pregen can sell its gear for a set amount to be applied to the raise dead. This makes it much more likely that a 2nd level character will be able to be brought back. The 2nd level character must contribute a minimum amount of gold. I'm looking for the wording in the guide and will post it when I find it.

When using a 4th level pregen the actual character would have to kick in 1,000 gold.

The Roleplaying Guild character must contribute a

minimum amount of gold to cover the costs before
using any of the pregenerated character’s wealth,
depending on the pregenerated character’s level: 0
gp for a 1st-level pregenerated character, 1,000 gp for
4th-level, and 2,000 gp for 7th-level. If you are playing
a pregenerated character in a scenario in which all
players are required to use pregenerated characters,
you do not need to contribute to this minimum.
• After applying Roleplaying Guild character resources, the
player can use the pregenerated character’s funds to pay
for these spellcasting services. If sold to pay for condition
removal, a 1st-level character’s gear is worth 75 gold
pieces, a 4th-level character is worth 3,000 gold pieces
and a 7th-level character is worth 11,500 gold pieces.
• The Roleplaying Guild character can spend Prestige
Points to help offset the gold cost of raising a
pregenerated character from the dead. She may pay
up to half of the cost of raise dead, resurrection, or true
resurrection with Prestige Points, at a rate of 1 PP =
375 gold pieces.
• The character can use the gold and prestige that she
has earned on the Chronicle sheet for the current
adventure to help pay for condition removal.
• If more resources are needed to pay for the cost of the
services, players at the table can, but are not required
to, contribute some of their own gold pieces.

EDIT: Remember, too, that as of season 9, a character can split the cost between prestige and gold. Here it's listed as 1 PP = 375 gold, and they can use the prestige from the module.

At any rate, between the 3,000 gold from selling the preen's gear and the gold for a full module, the character should have enough to be raised.

Okay, so to sum up:

1. The condition (death) has to be cleared immediately;

2. Chronicles that have been assigned (but not yet applied) can be used to help defray the cost of clearing conditions.

Is that right?

If so, we may have actually handled things correctly at the table!

Thanks everyone.

The chronicle for the session in which the pregen died can be used to defray the costs. I don't know about using the gold from other, unrelated held chronicles. But the gold from a module should be enough almost on its own, and they should get to deduct 3,000 gold from the cost of the raise dead for selling the pregen's equipment back.

Oops, missed a "not" there.

When the decision was made to require a player's actual character to foot some of the cost of raising a pre-gen, I had a set of questions, and I could never find the answer. Now that the dust has settled:

1) Can the actual character also use its resources to pay for body recovery, or to have other conditions (like blindness or disease) resolved? Can the character pay for these during the adventure, or only afterwards? (It seems weird that I can't pay to have the pre-gen healed, but I have to pay to have the character Raised after he's been killed.)

2) Do other conditions even need to be cured / resolved? Does the pre-gen's body need to be recovered?

3) How is this handled on Chronicle sheets if the player's character isn't at the table? For example, at the end of Chronicle Sheet 5, my 2nd-level character has 700 gp and a point of prestige. The amounts have been totaled and signed by the GM.

Presumably, this expense is paid for before my character gets her next Chronicle sheet. If she was playing a 4th-level pre-gen, she'll lose most of her money and her prestige. Where is this recorded? On the Chronicle that comes with the pre-gen?

As I recall, during a very heated discussion where Chris and I were just asking for clarification, no answers were ever given other than "of course you can!", without the how. Our position was misconstrued as us being against the idea of using unapplied resources, rather than just questioning how to properly itemize everything.

The answer quoted above from the Guide still doesn't address our questions (since I see Chris asking them again), but I gave up trying to figure it out a while ago. I just hand wave it and have the player figure it out.

Although I really don't GM much Pathfinder anymore anyways.
