Forum Trouble

Website Feedback

Not sure what is going on, but I cannot get any individual threads to display. For example, I navigate to the paizo playtest forum and no threads show, even though they do exist.

I can get into the druid preview thread through the paizo blog, and it displays the most recent threads in the forum at the bottom right. If I follow those links, I can get into individual threads, but if I go up to the forum itself, http://paizo.com/community/forums/pathfinder/playtest , no threads display (nor do they display anywhere else in the forums...).

I am having this same problem when I access the forums from my Windows 10 laptop running Firefox 61.0.1 (64 bit), but it works fine with Firefox ESR on my Linux box and Firefox on my android phone. The problem prevents me from seeing the list of threads in any subforum. I believe it's part of the same issue that the text of my private messages also does not show up. The problem started day before yesterday (the same time that the font on the forums changed).

Let's try flagging this post and see if anyone from "customer service" actually cares enough to respond... I can live with you not having a fix in hand, but it would be nice to know you're trying...

Hi pad300,

Can you please provide your operating system and the browser version you are running while trying to access the playtest forums ?

Thanks!

OS: Windows 10 Home Edition

Browser : Google Chrome, Version 67.0.3396.99 (Official Build) (64-bit)

And it's not just the playtest forums, that was just an example. It's all the forums.

And I continue to see no forum...

Redelia, can you set your browser to override the font, and see if the problem goes away? In Firefox's preferences, under General > Language and Appearance > Fonts and Colors, you'll find an "Advanced" button. Uncheck the box that says "Allow pages to choose their own fonts."

Pad300, I don't know of a way to test this individual aspect on Chrome, so I'm going to suggest trying a reset. Go to chrome://settings/ and click "Advanced" at the bottom, then "Restore settings to their original defaults" (also at the bottom).

Ok, doing this does restore the forums, and also disables all extensions. Enabling my extensions individually, it appears the extension "DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials" interferes with your forum. Given that exists to block assorted web tracking techniques, what exactly are you doing by way of tracking and other behaviours that I would describe as actively obnoxious ?

The font override setting did not do anything. The problem was indeed DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials. As soon as I whitelisted paizo.com in the settings for that extension, everything works properly.

(Paizo.com is probably the only site that I would do this for; I trust you guys to not be doing any behind the scenes nonsense that I would dislike. I do still encourage you to sort out this problem for others. I also reported it to DuckDuckGo as a site broken by their extension, so they may be able to fix it from their end.)

Pad300, in terms of tracking, we are using Matomo internally to determine which browsers, operating systems, device types, and screen sizes are most popular to help us in prioritizing our UI efforts, as well as to answer behavioral questions about how people tend to use our site. Oddly enough, after installing the DuckDuckGo extension, it doesn't seem to be aware that we're using Matomo. It may be that DuckDuckGo considers first-party tracking benign, so we fall outside its radar.

I am, however, able to reproduce the forum issue. We currently load forum content as part of a second data request after the initial page load, and it seems that the extension interferes with that process. We'll look into this more. Thanks for bringing it to our attention!

For others having this problem, here is a temporary fix for the issue:

You'll need to 'whitelist' Paizo.com in the settings for DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials. By doing this, you're trusting Paizo to not be tracking you or doing the other things the extenstion protects against. I'll describe the exact steps for Firefox; if you use Chrome, they may be a bit different.

Start by clicking on the icon on the top of your browser window for DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials. A small rectangle will drop down. In the upper right corner of that rectange is three horizontal lines, also known as the 'hamburger icon.' Click on that to for 'more options' and click on 'settings.'

At the bottom of the list of settings is one labelled 'Add site to whitelist.' Click on this, and then enter www.paizo.com. Then hit the button 'Add to whitelist' and everything should work properly.

It also may be helpful if more users report the website to DuckDuckGo using 'Report Broken Site.'

Just to be clear here, when Brian says we're using Matomo "internally", he means that all of the analysis is being done by Paizo using Matomo tools. It's telling us—and only us—what people are doing exclusively within our site, and that data is not being transmitted to anyone else.
