2E wishlist: PFS specific PRD instead of Additional Resources

Prerelease Discussion

Sovereign Court

If Paizo ever makes a PRD for 2E I hope it is PFS specific instead of having a separate Additional Resources page for it if not everything in 2E is applicable for PFS. Or at least a line in the PRD page to identify if the page is PFS legal.

I find the current Additional Resources page to be hard to read through. You can't use it without having to flip back and forth between the page and the PDFs or books and you can't use it with the current PRD as the PRD does not seem to include the Companion books like Blood of the Beasts.

Are you suggesting that Paizo leave things out of the PRD if they aren't PFS legal? ?

No. They want either clear indicator if something is PFS legal or a separate PFS-only PRD.

I'd be surprised to get either unfortunately.

I think that's a great idea!

I currently use Archives of Nethys which does a similar thing . . .

An icon indicating PFS legal would be enough but I would prefer a PRD containing only PFS stuff. Ohhh, how about a filter so it only displays PFS stuff? Or they can make everything PFS legal and not worry about excluding stuff.

Question about the 1E PRD: does it exclude the companion books by design (i.e. it only contains the big books) or did they just not have the resources the small books like the companions and guides?

Have you used Archives of Nethys?
They already include Icons indicating PFS legality and Companion line material.
I'm not sure if PFS legality is already option in it's "filter" search off the top of my head, I would guess it is.
So I don't see priority in changing what PRD is when Nethys already covers that niche fine.
Having non-active, simple PRD which is direct reflection of rules text without additions is legit role.
Anybody else can release niche-purpose filtered/modified info like Karui does with Nethys under Paizo's licence.
That's almost the point of such licence existing.

*shrug* As horribly out of date as the current one is, I can't imagine that a new PRD for would be of much use once reprints start showing up. So I don't really think it'd matter much if it'd be PFS specific, filtered or non-PFS: however it's made, unless they also fundamentally change the way they structure updates it's going to be by far the worst possible option for reference.

The starfinder equivalent still being "under construction" does not instill much hope that their schedule of updating these things is going to improve.

It sounds like you want Paizo to trim down Pathfinder so that it doesn't contain anything except Society information. To limit the game to just what is allowed in organized play.

I get what Muzouka is saying. I haven't played PFS, but when I tried making a character it was daunting to figure out whether an option was PFS-legal or not, even using Archives of Nethys. It'd certainly be nice for those players to have a database with all of the legal options in one place. And a filter on the PRD should be possible, so that wouldn't disrupt people playing in other ways.

I think they want a second, PFS-only PRD, not to get rid of the full PRD.

I'm not 100% sure on this, but I think Paizo uses an XML backend, that's then managed through InDesign and some other software. I may be a few years out of date, here!

If I'm not though, and if that's the case that that is what they use, then it would be possible to tag "PFS Info Boxes" in their source and have them set to publish in the PRD (or turn them off, when firing to a different publication).

Of course, while "technically simple," doing so would add another layer to maintenance, and I believe that the PFS team is separate from the PRD team, is separate from the website team.

You'd...have to hire an admin assistant to go between them, and give that assistant access to some higher-level abilities.

That's my guess, anyhow.

(I love XML, but sometimes you need a Mad Hatter's Hat after you've delved so far, especially when it does what it is supposed to do--enable cross-team information-sharing.)

Silver Crusade

I'd like to think that materials published by paizo but not balanced enough to get into society or something that's going to go away in the new edition.

That would mean that the only things that are illegal are things that are associated with evil or crafting, and anyone who knows that those things aren't allowed in society should be able to just tell by looking at the abilities that they aren't going to be legal.

(Of course that evil and crafting list will probably be different in the new edition but my point still stands.)

I guess that the softcover and Campaign Setting materials, which don't go on the PRD, get the shaft in PFS then?

Until added to the Additional Resources PDF....
