One of many, many I did not recognize. My elderly eyes trying to pick out small figures didn't help in several cases. I think I found Robby Reed (Dial 'H' for Hero) but can't be positive. But I also didn't recognize the giant flaming figure on the far right, and he was impossible to miss.

Okay, that explains Ultraman but not The Gentleman from Astro City (the Fred MacMurray clone in the bottom left corner) -- how does he fit in?

Just as the Samaritan is Astro City's version of Superman and Confessor is the AC version of Batman and Winged Victory is AC's Wonder Woman, The Gentleman is AC's version of Captain Marvel. His appearance gives it away, and one of his friends is a talking tiger.

Or Adam Warlock? Can't just be due to the lightning bolt on his chest; I don't see a Flash anywhere. Then again, I see Mage (the Hero Denied) and Madman -- do they transform?

Warlock's costume was a deliberate homage to Captain Marvel according to Wikipedia.

I have no knowledge of the other 2.

Including Gomer Pyle is, I admit, hilarious...but also kind of stretches reasonable parameters. Likewise, the genie Shazzan seems out of bounds...though it's true he is summoned by invoking his name.

And his name is almost "Shazam". I can see it. Clealry the parameters are broad indeed. :)

"His appearance gives it away?" Can you elaborate on that?

I had forgotten about Loony Leo (a lion, not a tiger, but I see your point.)

Today I tried looking for more info on the Gentleman and found one website which says that "The Gentleman is not actually a living entity, but a manifestation formed from the tremendous psychic powers of Matilda "Tessie" Armstrong."

That's not something I recall being referenced in any of the Astro City series, and I can't find a second source for the statement, but it could explain both his inclusion, and the identity of the girl with him.

I remember that.

My Dad was the story.

I guess I'll have to dig that issue out of the closet. Don't ring a bell at all, although that secondary cover? The guy with the palm frond wings? I'm sure I have that.

I seriously hate Purple 4th Wall Guy, so hysterical amnesia could be responsible for my not remembering this story.

Saw it over the weekend. My takeaway? Shazam! Half Superman/half The Tick.

Well to be fair, Quark, Captain Marvel/Shazam WAS kind of derived as a magic Superman. Now he's just kid with Superman's powers.

Probably doesn't help with the Luthor/Sivana comparisons that they have John (Lionel Luthor) Glover playing Sivana's dad.

Scarab Sages

Took my boy to see this yesterday. We both enjoyed it. Actually, the boy said he "loved" it.

I thought some of stuff Billy was doing as Shazam was a bit off for that specific character (making money, etc), but fit with what a typical kid might do in that situation.

Also....

Spoiler:
Sivana was written to be more like Sabbac or Black Adam. I would have preferred they keep him more in keeping with his comic appearances as evil scientist. This worked well, however.

Spoiler:
I think that Sivana is going to return to his more standard role in next installments. He was an evil professor of the occult before putting the eye in his head. The sins were giving him power

Finally saw it. It was super fun. If I start thinking hard about it, I start seeing plotholes and character development nitpicks, but I kinda wanna let it be what it was. Loved the climax. Wish Mary had more of a role (I've always liked her) but it was great.

I am surprised that of the many names he was called "Captain Thunder" wasn't one, and annoyed that one wasn't "the Big Red Cheese."

While I'm not generally a fan of Judd Winnick's writing, he has written a great version of Sivanna.

He did this great scene of this little old guy in a Hawaiian shirt and straw hat standing on a beach talking to Psimon and the Fearsome five about having to be true to yourself. That he had looked deep inside himself and realized, "I'm an evil mad scientist...and I'm ok with that"

and the last page is him with this hideous little grin on his face as the sun sets into the ocean.

Watched it last week .Not bad at all. It is probably one of the besr movies I've seen in the last few months
Worth a wotch
