The skills chapter regularly mentions taking 20 on skill checks if the character has access to an infosphere or a "downloaded dataset".

Page 430 notes starships can download an encyclopedia-like dataset that can be used in place of network-aided research. Page 215 of the computers chapter lists "secure data modules" that can allow a character with access to take-20 on some skill checks. Page 215 also suggests a price cap of 1000 credits.

So how many credits for that deluxe encyclopedia-like dataset; 1000cr? Or is it 1000cr per skill?

Can any tier 1 computer hold the dataset or is there a suggested minimum size? How about a mechanic's custom rig - or their drone or exocortex; could they download such a dataset?

I don't believe any of this is directly spelled out in the rules, but I think for a guide, I would look to the library chip, for taking 20 on a specific skill allowed by the chip (Culture, Engineering, Life Science,
Mysticism, or Physical Science), it is 250 credits. When this chip is attached to a tier-0 computer or higher it gives a +4 circumstance bonus.

I personally think the item is undercosted, but it appears you can get take 20 with +4 circumstance for 250 credits and attach it to anything that is a tier-0 computer or higher.

Data sets seem to be ship-exclusive, I'm afraid. But at least they are free. Get a control module for your ships computer and a range III upgrade, and you can use it as much as you want, as long as it's parked on the planet.

You can't get data sets, but can get as many Secure Data Modules for your computer as you want. They all give access to Take 20 to recall knowledge or identify creatures, and their price only restricts the amount of information available.

For instance, as a GM I'd rule that a data module on goblins of a specific planet you are planning to visit would cost only 10 credits; a data module on all goblins would go for 100 credits; and a data module on humanoids would bill you for a 1000 credits.

The three modules all let you Take 20 on Life Science checks when trying to identify creatures - but the first is useful only on your specific destination, the second on all goblins, the third on all humanoids.
