Interest Check for high level solo games - 5e

Recruitment

I'd like to run a series of mid level games for a Level 20 PC to play solo.

The purpose is to test at what level Adventure can a level 20 solo the Adventure, as well as comparing the capabilities of different classes and concepts.

Character design will have specifications set for each play through. Each play through should be short, nor more than 2-6 weeks for each instance. We play until you beat the Adventure or you fail (failure can have other options, such as trying again or even getting a ressurection).

I can run multiple instances at a time, giving multiple people a chance to play.

The adventures I'm running will have a decent mix of all three pillars of 5e: exploration, social, and combat.

More details can be given if interest if shown.

Who's up to give it a shot?

Hey bookrat! Hmmm... an interesting idea. I'll think about. What kind of posting rate are you thinking? I don't think I could do more than 1/day for this given my current commitments. Even then, I'll have to think about it a little.

Once per day is fine with me, but for those willing I can go faster.

The only thing I really ask is that whatever pace we decide on, that we let each other know if there is an extended period of time when we can't post.

Also, I'm willing to run this game here on the Paizo boards, or on a chat app (Slack, as it has it's own dice roller).

Slack would actually work even better for me and I could probably commit to 2x per day minimum. Due to my slightly weird situation, I have slack at home but not regular access to an internet browser.

Where on the flavor spectrum are you thinking? I think it would get pretty boring for me to drop most of the RP aspect and just try to solve problems as fast as possible but I probably would also not be typing out elaborate and RP-heavy posts as a solo player. So I'd probably be thinking of playing a little light on the RP compared to a normal game but with it still present. How's that sound?

Regarding flavor, I'm good with anywhere from minimal to heavy role-playing. There will be social encounters, so at least some RP will be needed.

But I don't expect any background stories or anything like that.

Character concpets I want to run with this are as follows:
1) 20 Wizard (no multiclass)
2) 20 Any full caster
3) 11/9 any two full casters
4) 4/4/4/4/4 of five full casters (the "Cantrip Master"); other variants of this concept will be considered.
5) 20 Champion
6) Any thing else people want to try out, including multiclass options (I'd like to wait to allow this option until I've seen some of the above played first).

Stats will be standard array or standard PB. Magic items will be a mix of random plus you pick (1 legendary, 1 Very Rare, 2 Rare, and 6 total of Common/Uncommon, plus some random rolling). Non-magical equipment is pretty much whatever you like - talk to me about really odd things. Feats are allowed.

Books allowed: Any currently published 5e book or PDF (including the free Magic the Gathering crossover PDFs); no UA.

This will remain an open recruitment for anyone who wants to give it a shot. They're all solo games, so if someone expresses interest, I can always open up a new game. If I don't respond in a timely manner, shoot me a PM.

I’d be interested in trying out some builds with you.

The champion could be cool, but for a solo game, how would you handle healing?
Same question applies for the 20 wizard as well.

Oh yeah. I like what you're describing here. I would be most happy to do 1 or 2 with 2 being a mood druid or a lore bard.

Good call about no UA. Most of the true shenanigans I was considering are UA.

I’m trying out a 20 moon Druid in another game. I thinks going to be awesome.

I bet! "Oh I can't deal with this flying enemy very well with wild shape?" SHAPECHANGE. Now I'm a spellcasting dragon!

What adventures are you looking to run? And how much of them? I'd imagine you're thinking of the last couple sessions.

Hi grey!

The champ has an auto regenerate ability at high levels. But no matter which way you slice it, it's up to the player to figure out a way. Perhaps one of the magic items? Or just buy a lot of healing potions, as they're straight out if the PHB. :)

I've got some 11-16 level AL modules. They're designed to last a single session if we were playing live.

Re: Random magic items. If you roll something you're PC can't use, you can roll again. If you get a repeat, you can roll again. You can choose your magic items before or after you get your random ones.

Roll once on each of the Magic Item Tables A-I, found on DMG 144-149.

This does sound interesting and I am most interested.

I am not the biggest expert of 5th Ed, my possible drawback.

Table A: 1d100 ⇒ 64=Potion of climbing
Table B: 1d100 ⇒ 31=Ammunition +1
Table C: 1d100 ⇒ 36=Potion of dimunition
Table D: 1d100 ⇒ 25=Potion of invisibility
Table E: 1d100 ⇒ 84=Spell scroll (9th level) YES!!
Table F: 1d100 ⇒ 62=Wand of web
Table G: 1d100 ⇒ 14=Figurine of wondrous power
Table H: 1d100 ⇒ 61=Armor of resistance (breastplate)
Table I: 1d100 ⇒ 28=Ring of invisibility

Figurine: 1d8 ⇒ 7=Onyx dog
Reroll H: 1d100 ⇒ 71=Efreeti bottle

Haha. Perfect. More pets for the necromancer wizard!

Should I just roll from among all the level 9 wizard spells in alphabetical order for the scroll?

Yes, roll alphabetically.

Grey, Jezebel: what are you interested in trying?

I won’t be able to roll till later tonight when I would have access to my DMG. I will also sort out a CS for my champion.

Current proposals are:

Necromancer (caster4life, slack app)
Eldritch Knight (personal friend, slack app)
Champion or Battle master (personal friend, live, in two weeks)
"Cantrip Master" (personal friend, live, in six weeks)
Champion (greycastle, pbp or slack app)

I can accept one more for now. After that, I'll need to pause recruitment until some of these online games are complete. Feel free to continue posting applications and characters.

I’m good with slack or Paizo. Whichever is easier for you.

Cool to see the amount of people playing fighters! I was considering doing a champion next but you might have all the data you need on that. :)

What are you thinking of doing with your champion, Greycastle? I started considering this and there are some interesting optimization problems/possibilities so I was curious what kind of solo build people would plan.

I’m not sure honestly. I’d like to find a way to capitalize on the increased crit range so that’s my first consideration is how to get adv as much as possible.

GM Bookrat- I am open to suggestions as to what I play. But my preference would be a Moon Circle Druid. By the looks of things that would fit in quite well with what other players are playing, as nobody else is playing a divine full caster. It is also what I know and being a class that can do a number of different things is well suited to solo play.

I don't have slack and am probably on the other side of the world [I am in Australia] playing in person is not an option. So I will be PbP if selected.

Do you want me to roll magic items at this stage?

Here is the link to the discussion page. Go ahead and make your character there.

Oh, and one last thing. Does the phrase "sister salvation" have any meaning to you whatsoever?

That seems the way to go! Maybe a feat like "Mounted Combatant"? Put wings of flying on an elephant that you've purchased and go to town! XD I don't know if that's completely legal but it sounds awesome!

PM sent with link to slack room. You can connect via browser or the app.

Would love to give this a go, I'd like to get some more experience with 5e, and I really like your style, bookrat. However, I've just applied for another game and I'm not sure I can quite manage it if I join that, so just dotting for now.

I can't create a character now, it is too late at night. Tomorrow or Friday.

Somebody else knows KMFDM!

That is exactly where I got the name from, and I have most of their CDs and have seen them live.

I love them; my favorite band back in high school - 20 years ago... Geeze I'm getting old. Still listen to them periodically.

Absolutely no rush on character creation. Take a few weeks if you need it. Just keep in communication so I know we're still on.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

My love of KMFDM dates to about the same time. Though it is now 40 years since I was in high school, when there were no CDs and no KMFDM. So you are not getting that old sonny. :)

KMFDM have some... interesting fans. Sascha Grey, former porn superstar was one, and the Sascha is after Sascha Konzieto. The pair of shooters at Columbine liked KMFDM and Rammstein, and the right wing loony who shot all those people on an island in Norway left a message on the internet, he expected to die though he in fact didn't. And the music in the background was "Stray Bullet".

Since character creation is not at all rushed I can run it past Michael. A friend from my tabletop roleplaying group who knows 5th ed way better than I.

Since it's 5e, you know that I had to throw my hat into the ring.

given that we've got a queue and it looks like a few wizards, I'll go with one of the more interesting builds: the 11/9 two full casters:

In this case, It will be Warlock 11/Druid 9 (I have this concept of a shapeshifter whose wildshapes are corrupted by the pact he made with an elder god.

Hi Vrog! It'll have to wait until I finish some of these games, otherwise I'll have too much on my plate. But you're in the queue!

I understand.

That's a fun idea!

Thanks! I like to come up with weird ideas when I make 5e characters.
