The 31st was surprisingly busy. A lot of people planned to paint their domiciles on the 1st, apparently. I celebrated the new year with a quiet evening at home with the missus. Turkey breast, potatoes au gratin (we cheated and bought frozen instead of making our own), fried mushrooms, Brussels sprouts fried with bacon and onion, sauce, a little wine, lots of Christmas cookies, and a scared cat who hid under the sofa the entire evening while we assembled/primed/painted minis.
Hope everyone else had an enjoyable evening, and the coming year will be better than the previous.

Try to keep my distance from colleagues and customers as I have been infected with covid again and have a slight fever. I would have preferred to stay at home but that would leave the place understaffed. In the good-and-bad-news column, the place is basically dead so it's not a particularly onerus shift to work.
Part of the deadness is higher cost of living, though not nearly as bad as England has suffered, part of it is the amount of snow we've had most of the week. Normally I spend 40 minutes getting to/from work, yesterday I spent about three hours getting home.

We had a good time tonight. Counting the player joining over Facebook Video I had 11 players, one a friend who's not gamed in a long time. He brought his daughter along and there was another new face. The game didn't last long, however, as they figured out well before the boss fight that the bbeg was The One Eyed, One Horned Flying Purple People Eater. This was supposed to be the Halloween game but since we didn't get to play and I just held onto it until tonight.

And once again, my health crashes another gaming weekend. My body is rejecting my pain medicine, causing the pain receptors to "backfire" so even though I haven't fully stopped the meds cold turkey (that's bad, kids) I feel EXACTLY as I did when I did go through opioid withdrawal in 2005. This started on Monday and there has been no let up. Oy.
I hope everyone has a better weekend in mind than mine!

Damn, I'm sorry to hear that.
Barring a disaster I'm pretty sure my weekend will end up better than yours. The worst that is likely to happen is work calling and asking if I can take an extra shift tomorrow. The second worst thing (which is more likely to happen than the first) is me not getting much mini painting done because Her Furry Highness lays claim to my lap and one arm for much of the day. I don't know if that makes things better or worse for you, Cal.

Sneaker: I'm going to wait for a momentary lapse in attention from the Titan and then leap up onto the counter and attempt to scoff his breakfast, even though I've already had mine.
Squeaker: Well, I'm just going to YELL and YELL and YELL and YELL and YEEEEEELLLLLLL, and then I'm going to sidle up to your blind side and bap you on the head

Though there was no game this weekend, I found out tonight my landlord offered to sell the duplex where I live to my son and his girlfriend before he put it on the market AND at a substantial discount from his asking price. The process started Friday and I have a feeling of hope I haven't known for a while. It's not a done deal yet, but I'm crossing fingers and tentacles for a good outcome.

Our little Yona is actually a very well-behaved cat so I don't really object when she asks for a little attention. She very rarely goes places she shouldn't, she doesn't knock things off high surfaces (other than the occasional eraser) so we can leave minis and dice and whatnot out, she only claws furniture when she feels she's being ignored after having sat patiently for ten or so minutes waiting for us to entertain her, she's generally pretty quiet.
I get a bit frustrated when she gets attention but doesn't know what she wants to do with it, but all in all I shouldn't complain. She even gave me a couple hours for painting over the weekened, which was more than I expected. I actually managed to finish two minis.

The only pets we have is the mouse that inexplicably evades my mouse trap.
I got a new one though that I'm hopeful will solve the problem and we can have the house animal free again. At least until the swallows try to nest in the dryer vent again.
Also, there is the spider colony I've reached an accord with (I don't kill them and in return they kill the other bugs (yes I know arachnids technically aren't bugs).

Friday evening I was allowed to paint a little. Saturday was spent mostly making dinner or being slept upon. Sunday was early dinner with my parents, celebrating my father's birthday, then home for the SO's game time. I spent most of that giving lap again.
Hope you managed to have a proper game night, Cal.

Thanks, but I'm sad to report that I didn't. I've GM'd through anxiety episodes but this one burst forth as a pure panic attack with no anxiety preamble an hour into the game and I had to shut it down. I felt awful doing so but if I'd not stopped things could've escalated further into heart attack territory.
It breaks my heart to consider it, but given how much momentum we as a group lost to COVID and the difficulties we've had since being able to gather again (about half or more related to one aspect of my health or another), I may have gone about as far as I can with gaming. At least as a GM. Since 2021 (and the great majority of the time leading back to 1985) I have been the perma-GM. I can count on two hands and have fingers left over the number of times I've gotten to be a player since. I'm utterly burned out and no one, NO ONE in my group will take over the GM duties. I am burnt out.
I have a lot to think about.

One question you might consider is "What other things can we do as a group that people would make an effort to attend?"
For me, 'monthly potluck with a theme' sounds possible. It's more than just 'let's get togther'. It's "everyone bring their favorite pizza topping, and we'll make homemade pizzas". Or "everyone bring a six pack of their favorite beer, and we'll have a tasting".
Or 'binge watch some series'; or rent Avatar and have Avatar themed snacks.
Or "next month, you're in charge Sam, and the month after that it's you Jane". Let the group take on some of the burden of the social planning and the emotional toil of pulling everyone and everything together.

My sympathies. If you are burned out, take a break. Do something else, like board games or card games, watch movies or sports or whatever, but take a break from GMing. If your hobby is more of a burden than a joy, it's time to stop doing the supposed hobby, at least for a time.
This is what I'm going to have to do, but my guilt complex kicks in because one of my long, long-time players has a terminal illness and I want to make the time she has left fun and another has had five strokes (and is younger than I by about five years) and lives 2.5 hours away and only gets to attend when someone is available to drive him. If those folks get weekend jobs, he'll be left out again. I shouldn't worry so much about those things (I guess) but I do. Board or card games are right out as absolutely none of my group has interest in those things and I have no interest in sports, myself. But honestly, my fuel tanks are empty and coasting on fumes can only go so far. I've had two complete breakdowns in my life and I've come to recognize the way I feel when I'm headed in that direction again. I don't wanna do that ever again (though the first one, in 1987 where I descended into actual psychosis and took on a new persona for a year does make for some interesting stories...lol).

No game this weekend at Sweet Home Calabama. It's actually still sort of dicey (see what I did there?) for travel out of Memphis, where three of the group drives in from. Plus, I'm still dealing with complications after an emergency tooth extraction 9 days ago (on top of it breaking, bicuspids are only supposed to have two roots. I'm in the 6% of Homo sapiens with three), so that sort of threw the dentist off a bit...lol.
So what are the rest of you lot up to this weekend?

I was going to a poker game Saturday night, but it turns out my buddy's wife is also hosting a baby shower the same day (and it runs into the evening, I guess?), so the poker game got nixed.
Update: Turns out my friend has Covid, so the baby shower his wife was hosting got rescheduled. The poker game is back on as an online game, pandemic-style.
I told my friend it was a power move to get Covid to get out of a baby shower.

It's a heavy bag, but it's free-standing. We need to pour more sand in the base, as it's a bit wobbly, but actually getting the sand in there is a huge pain in the backside.
