What's happening this weekend?

End of the school year celebrations, ceremonies, etc. Our local school district has the last day of school on a Tuesday this year, which is weird. So, they've "graduated" today, but they still need to go back Monday and Tuesday, where they'll each have a party of some sort.

Keeping things quiet, the house will be watching Turning Red and maybe some board games this Sunday. We're keen to start My City now that everyone is not dying during game time.

Since we get two days' holiday this week thanks to are berlovad moanurch, I spent most of today ferrying bags of stuff from Old House to New House, then finished off a 'Four Against Darkness' adventure, did some exercise. and wrote a song. Should be Pathfinder on Sunday.

Game tomorrow night, and, true to form, I've had three weeks to prep and here it is, less than 36 hours away, and I'm only now getting stuff ready. This week I do have an excuse, though. Stomach virus. In general, I have the constitution of a vending machine (stealing a line first spoken by a friend many years ago) but if anything, that will even remotely affect my stomach and its attendant parts I'll get it. And get it bad. But I think I'm past it. Finally.

How about everyone else?

Should be a quiet night, Rise of the Runelords is probably on hiatus for the summer unless we go without our vacationing oracle. Which we might, since she has already run the AP.

My kids' last day of school got out on Tuesday. A friend of ours offered to take my oldest with his kids to the beach. I said "great, thanks!" and cancelled the Wednesday/Thursday child care I had for him. (I work from home on Fridays). I told this friend what was up.

He texts me a few days later: "[Beach town] Thursday through Sunday?"

A bit annoying, but maybe he couldn't swing things on Wednesday. That's only one unexpected day to cover. I reply yes. I call my mom in to drive into the city to watch my kid, which she happily does.

On Tuesday, he sends me another text, "Hey, can you watch [my kid] and [his kid] on Thursday from 8:30 to 2:00, and then I'll take them to the beach?"

This is even more frustrating. I don't want to ask my mom again, because I know she moved some things around to make Wednesday work. My wife manages to work from home on Thursday, because my boss made a comment recognizing all of the time I've taken off recently for end-of-the-school-year stuff. (Not in a threatening way, but more in a "it's time to focus and get started on this new project" way.) My friend doesn't drop his kid off at my house until 11:30 on Thursday. Then he doesn't pick the kids up to go to the beach until 3:15. So, that's like less than two hours of time where he has my kid of the two days that we were initially expecting.

And then he's invited us to come and join them for the weekend. He's rented a house near the beach, and his wife is out of town traveling, so he's over there making memories with my oldest and his two kids all by himself. So I'm driving down there tonight through Sunday morning so I don't feel guilty. And because he and his wife (and their kids) are our friends.

And he's such a bombastic "experience everything!" personality that I know it's going to be emotionally exhausting. I know he's going to want to keep things active, and have lots of conversations about politics and culture and all the new hobbies he thinks I should start, and I'll have to be non-committal without being rude (which honestly I'm good at because I can just make jokes about whatever we're talking about without actually saying anything). And right now I'm just thinking about all of the things that I won't get done this weekend that I was planning to, and how I'm complaining about having to go to the beach this weekend.

Wow...there is so much there and all of it would drive me bonkers...lol. I was never the wide-eyed "experience everything" person (unless it was between 1982 and 1989 and involved alcohol) and I'm now an "experience everything vicariously" person and am much happier...lol

I sat down and looked over my game notes for our last session and discovered, to my delight, we hadn't finished the last adventure I'd had written. We got a late start and bad weather was moving in so we cut everything short with the players finding a safe-ish spot to rest up for a few hours and get back spells and such. Now I can save my panicked game prep for the next session!

Almost done with another job, this one was super complicated. I only have another couple of hours of nitpicking on Monday. Unfortunately because I'm ahead of schedule I get to then fix another crew's s%%~ty job.

Also, my oldest graduated high school and my youngest graduated from elementary school this week so I'm just going to spend the weekend playing Elden Ring, cleaning up the house and shutting off the ole brain box for a couple of days.

The game was cancelled just a couple of hours before our normal start time. The Memphis players were already on their way here. All of the players who live semi-locally couldn't make it and neither could the player who comes in over Skype.

Bleh.

Hm. I bet that made the Memphis players real happy. :-(

I felt so terrible about that. I still do. One of the guys, Eddie, recently had his fifth stroke and had finally recovered enough to travel. AND Friday was his birthday. I plan to call him this evening.

Tried looking up synonyms for "priestess" and almost none of the first page of results included anything remotely like synonyms. All these different thesaurus' and they gave things like goddess, ishtar (which should ne capitalized as it's a name), diva, queen, and prima-donna.

Seriously, wtf is wrong with the world? We got this we inspiring power of the internet to search many libraries worth of information in a second, and this is the best we get?

In case you needed a distraction from life. :)

My plan is to attempt to get back on track with my magimon game and building a stronghold with 80+ minions.

Yep, you're right. Just using one online thesaurus the hits for "priest" had dozens of synonyms. "Priestess had six". Maybe some of the words for priest can be seen of as unisex, or in some cases maybe have the word femininized by adding "-ess" to it. I dunno. I'm up far earlier than normal and nothing makes sense right now...LOL

Good morning, all!

No game this weekend here at Sweet Home Calabama. We're scheduled for a game next Saturday, though.

How about everyone else?

We should be restarting Savage Tide at long last tomorrow.

NWN thing on Sunday, hunting down some cultists.

We played 'Monster of the Week' (a game based on the Powered By The Apocalypse engine, where you run around investigating mysteries, like a cross between the X-Files and Scooby Doo) on Tuesday instead of D&D; no Pathfinder for me on Sunday, as I'm going to see the band Magma instead.

I think it will be more anime and My City this weekend, pending work schedules.

This Father's Day, my wife got on an airplane to go to a convention for work, leaving me to raise my two children for four days.

The day after she gets back, I'm flying out of town to go to a cousin's wedding. I'm expecting lots of drama. For instance, I found out about the pending wedding (because of the mailed invitation) before my aunt (the bride's mother) found out.

oooooh...this oughtta be good.

What's everyone doing this weekend?

Game on here at Sweet Home Calabama. It was going to be the full crew, even the Memphis guys, then the only healer and wizard came down with COVID while they were at a convention last week. So now I have to spend some time tonight changing elements of the game around to accommodate that little hitch. Ah, well. It'll be worth it.

We did a whole lot of nothing. This past week has been hell on wheels for Scint and I.

We had what was supposed to be the climactic boss fight of our Pathfinder campaign on Sunday, but, due to the spellcasters not concentrating on the matter in hand, it's going to drag on for another session.

I'm very sorry to hear this. I hope things are better this week!

My game didn't go exactly swimmingly. As you know, one of my bunch has had multiple strokes and we've had to reschedule the two games before this one. He was really, really wanting to come see everyone so I went ahead and threw a game together and I have to say this most recent stroke may have done a lot of damage that he's not telling us. His balance was terrible and every time he stood up someone went on alert to catch him. His cognition has been hit hard this time, and couldn't remember the name of the character he's been playing for over two years (I reminded him because I had it in my notes). But after only three hours I could tell he was beginning to wear completely out, so I made up an excuse about why I had to shut things down earlier than planned. I didn't want to say it was because he was struggling because I didn't want him to feel like it was his fault (or look at it in some negative fashion). His buddy grokked what I was doing and thanked me later. We're tentatively scheduled to play again July 9th, so hopefully that can come together.

Yes, they really do. I'm 58, morbidly obese, an admitted Mtn Dew addict, have had one heart attack where I coded and they had to shock me five times with the defibrillator to bring me back so I suppose I'm also a prime candidate for a stroke. My doctor is sometimes baffled that I haven't had one. Eddie is younger than I am by maybe five years and in much better shape weight-wise and his doctors can't find a reason why he keeps having them.

Welp, it's Friday again and the weekend has come charging straight at us, hellbent for leather. What is everyone up to this weekend? No games at Sweet Home Calabama this weekend, as player availability is very low (everyone has "grownup" things to do. "Important" stuff. What evs...I wanna play...lol).

Making scalloped potatoes and lemonade, possibly an apple or carrot cake or something if I feel really energetic, for a family get-together on Sunday. Sister and her kids are coming over for a few days so I'm going to be Uncle Bjørn on overtime.

I love a good carrot cake! It's also my son's favorite, by far (mine is pineapple upside down cake). It's been many a year since I had an apple cake. Uncle Bjørn, can I come over, too?

Pineapple upside down cake is definitely the best!

If you think you can make it to Norway, through the immense lines at the airport (long story short: covid 19 made a mess of mass air travel), and get to our place in 24 hours, I'm sure we can arrange something.

Barring that I can send you the recipes I use, which are both easy and very good.

This weekend is going to be packed. Housemate is flying in this afternoon, back from his completed robotics course in GA. Then we have friends bringing smoked chicken and tri-tip tomorrow for board game day. MtG and Betrayal 3E are on the docket. Then Monday the return of anime night after a month hiatus getting rested up from having the plague. Then finally on Tuesday we'll have a quieter house day.

Spending the 3rd at my mom's house to celebrate the 4th, and leaving the kids for a week. My mom will take one, my sister the other, and then they'll switch halfway through. A whole week with no kids, coming up!

As much as I would love to come to your house for cake (and by extension visit Norway) I'll have to settle for recipes!

Grandmother's Apple Cake:
4-5 tart apples. I use Granny Smith
5 tbs sugar
2 tbs cinnamon (maybe a few shakes of cardamom)
a few splashes of lemon juice

200 grams butter
200 g sugar
170 g flour
4 eggs, room temp
1 tsp baking powder (not baking soda)

1. heat oven to 180 C
2. peel and core apples, coat them in lemon juice, sugar and cinnamon
3. beat sugar and butter to a light, airy mix
4. add eggs one at a time, beat well
5. sift flour(mixed with baking powder) on and gently fold into the wet ingredients
6. spread half of the batter in a greased 24 cm diameter pan
7. place half the apples in the batter, thin side down
8 repeat steps 6 and 7.
9. bake for cs. 50 minutes

If done correctly, you will think there is too little batter and that there is way too much apple when assembling. It will look like a mess and you will be convinced it can't possibly work out. Don't worry, I've made this dozens of time and it turns out wonderfully every time.

Note, I found this recipe online some years ago and it was called by this name; it isn't a recipe from my grandmother.

And my mom called and says she has COVID. Obviously, I feel bad for her, but I was also (selfishly, I admit) worried about how it would affect our kid-less week. Fortunately, my sister offered to take both kids for the whole week, so I owe her.

Game did not happen this weekend, unsurprisingly.

Scint and I decided to put up an ad at our FLGS for 2-4 people looking for online play. Since unfortunately to be blunt one of our players is just notoriously unreliable and we'd like to be able to play again.

Today has been a great day of Codenames, Six Nimmt, Among Us, and My City. Some of the crew will be throwing down with Magic, so I’ll be chilling on YouTube. Smoked chicken and tri tip has been delicious.

End of 'Kingmaker' mega boss fight last night. To cut a long story short, we lost, the wizard betrayed us, my Paladin got turned into a squirrel, then we got exiled to Fairyland. The treacherous wizard became a Fairy Lord with his own realm, and the rest of us were transported to a sort of nature reserve for idiots.
