Who has a game this weekend? Or anything groovy going on at all? No game here this weekend, but we're managing to slowly get back to our alternating weekends schedule so we won't gather until next Saturday.

No games here this weekend. Tomorrow morning I'm going to a writer's group and then trying to use the afternoon to finalize things for what's going to be happening in my megadungeon campaign next weekend.

On a personal note a buddy of mine got me the "Hero's Feast" cookbook for my birthday. I was thinking I'd pick some stuff from the Halfling section and try to make it for Sunday dinner with my kids.

That sounds pretty fun. If food is involved in it, I'm almost guaranteed to have a good time!

Saturday we went to my mom's house to belatedly celebrate my sister's birthday. Sunday we ended up going to the beach with a couple other families in our quasi-bubble. Monday, I got quite a bit of chores done! A satisfying weekend.

Post the results in the Dinner Checks thread!

Welp, another weekend is upon us and I'm actually completely ready for my game Saturday night (usually it's about 3 pm on game day before I finish stuff up because I'm the Prince of Procrastination).

What's everyone else up to this weekend?

This past week was a light one for me, gaming-wise. Only my PF1e "Shattered Star" game ran. We killed the BBEG of The Curse of the Lady's Light the previous week, so this week was mainly the collection and distribution of the loot, figuring out what to do with our NPC prisoners(answer: We offered them jobs), and getting back to Magnimar.

We then all leveled up, did a bunch of downtime stuff (including four characters who decided to buy a villa in a middle-class neighborhood of Magnimar... my character didn't go in on that: She's a Varisian priest of Desna, and said she wasn't interested in having a permanent roof over her head.) We then got the mission brief for the next adventure: The Asylum Stone. We'll be heading to my character's city of origin, Kaer Maga!

I don't normally game on the weekend, but my wife is out of town to attend her youngest cousin's baby shower (the event is outdoors and all attendees are vaccinated). I chose not to go with her, and decided to get more gaming in!

Tomorrow, I'm running two games for Magpie Games Community Play Day. It's a double-shot of RPG horror, with Trophy Dark: Isle of Water and Blood at 11 AM, and Bluebeard's Bride at 7 PM.

You'll have much more fun doing that than you would at a baby shower. Trust me on this.

Believe me: I know!

Today I had intended to visit the extended-family-in-laws and celebrate grandmother-in-law's birthday but on the way to the train station I failed to notice a drop of 3 whole centimeters in the pavement and stepped off and twisted my ankle. So now I'm stuck at home.

Tomorrow I had intended to pick what I hope is the last of the plums from our two trees, juice them and make them into jelly, but I won't be doing that either. We've been blessed with plums this year. From two trees we've picked something like 70 liters, there are many many liters that have just fallen on the ground and probably at least another 20 liters still on the tress.

My chili peppers and tomatoes are producing like gangbusters this year!

It's a mix of habanero, Italian "cherry bomb", serrano, New Mexico long chilis, and poblanos. The habaneros especially are prolific!

By last weekend, I'd picked about five pounds(!) of chilis, more than half being habaneros. I ended up making nearly two quarts of habanero hot sauce, and hot-processed it all in 8-oz canning jars.

And, yes, I cooked the sauce in my back yard using my Coleman propane camp stove... I'd have fumigated the house if I'd tried to make that in the kitchen!

And as for the tomatoes... I haven't home-canned any of them, but I have made pasta with tomato sauce from scratch with fresh tomatoes for dinner several times in the past few weeks.

Bjørn - So sorry to hear about the ankle! I'm pretty prone to doing things like that anymore, so I can sympathize. As for plums, I'll be sending my address so that you can ship any excess jelly to me...lol My ex-wife has several wild plum trees on her property, and the window of time to harvest them is late May to early June so you have to be on the ball to get as many as you can before the squirrels and birds do. They're much smaller than the typical plum, are a brilliant scarlet when ripe, and a little more tart than most domestic varieties. So good.

Haladir - That's a LOT of peppers! Unfortunately, my aging palate can't handle "heat" of even the slightest degree anymore, otherwise I'd grow some in tubs around the my house every year.

Please pray for my friends' characters in tonight's game (Jeff AND his character in particular. I'll probably finally snap and lose all patience with him tonight). Send pleasant thoughts, etc. I'm in an inexplicably bad mood and I'm just straight pissed off about everything. Anxiety Disorder is wonderful.

Things got better after tacos so Jeff (and his character) were spared my wrath last night. We had to knock off a hour earlier than usual because of my players, who rarely gets to come down and join in face to face because she lives two+ hours away is a realtor and got a call just before game time that a prospective client finally made up their mind and wanted to see a parcel of land. They initially wanted to look at it at 7 am today. It took some bargaining but she finally convinced them she wasn't in town but would meet them at 10. Then she got two more calls from folks wanting to see some houses today. But we found a good stopping place from which to jump into the next session.

I just wanted to say that the two games I ran yesterday for Magpie Games Community Play Day went AMAZINGLY.

I had so much fun running them, and my players all said that they had a ball.

I just heard from reliable sources that the two most senior Paizo customer service staff got sacked today for having the audacity to ask the management team for better working conditions, and for defending themselves after their request was belittled in front the other managers.

If these rumors are true, I'm done with Paizo. I will not support a company that treats its employees that way.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Dang, I hate to hear that, though I wouldn't be surprised because that's just the way personnel are treated in America anymore. On the other side, I've bought everything I'll ever need for Pathfinder, so I won't be supporting them financially.

Both Sara Marie and Diego Valdez have announced on Twitter that they are no longer employees of Paizo and are looking for work.

I've heard the rumors confirmed independently from multiple sources.

And here's a Twitter thread from a former employee who's finally ready to spill the dirt on Paizo because "there's no one left in the company to retaliate against for my actions."

And if Ms. Woldridge is now the community manager of this space, I have absolutely no desire to remain here.

If you are looking to find me on other spaces on the Inter-webs, I'm on Twitter

I'm also a somewhat-frequent poster on The Gauntlet Forums.

And I'm also frequently found on various Discords, including:

Magpie Games
Trophy Role-Playing Game
Exalted Funeral

You can also watch recordings of some of my online play sessions on my YouTube Channel.

I sincerely hope our paths will cross again!

The girl and I never buy tickets well in advance of going to a movie. We're content to wait until after opening weekend and find a weekday that works for both of us so tickets are easier to come by and better seats are available. We bought opening day tickets for Dune (Wednesday, for some reason) last month. Now I have a busted ankle which is worse than merely twisted as I initially hoped, so I don't think I'll make it to the theater on crutches and manage sit still with my foot down for a couple hours and then hobble home. On top of that just got my second jab. It was supposed to be next week but Monday evening I was informed it was today, and I doubt I'll be feeling up for a movie once it kicks in. My first jab had basically no side effects so I may be fine, but everyone I've spoken to had their butts kicked by the second jab.

My sympathies to Sara Marie and Diego. May they find jobs and co-workers worthy of them.

This is our "off" weekend but I hope to play in someone else's online game tomorrow afternoon. I haven't had any sleep since Wednesday so my participation depends on that.

What about the rest of you'ns? Big doin's?

Just a quiet weekend. There's always chores and two kids to take care of. No big plans other than that.

They had the day off of school today, so I took them to the zoo. I prioritized a part of the zoo we don't get to very often because the kids always want to head straight to the "African Safari" section of the zoo. But on the other side of the zoo, they have a new section themed by the Pantanal wetlands section of South America. The river otters were feeling very playful and the capybaras were a big hit!

I've been following the Paizo drama that caused Haladir to leave, and it hasn't been great for being productive or, frankly, my mental health.

There's a game on Sunday. I think. Beyond that, I don't know.

I decided not to follow that. It would just have probably induced an anxiety episode for me. I keep worrying that something is going to go down that causes sites like Archives of Nethys and the D20pfsrd to be taken down and I and my players use the hell out of those resources.

I haven't been to a zoo in literally two decades, the last one being the one in St. Louis. In 1987 a friend of mine and I were literally banned from the Memphis Zoo for life, but time passes and people forget, so he's been back a few times...lol

DungeonmasterCal wrote:

That's probably a good idea. In my perpetual disillusionment with "things," I feel like this will mostly blow over, with some parts of Paizo and its fanbase being improved and some parts of Paizo and its fanbase being worse. But overall, most of the drama is that there's a LOT of voices chiming in, and the voices that matter are staying silent, not saying much of consequence, or not saying much right now.

I see no reason why d20PFSRD could be affected in any way. It seems highly unlikely that AoN is going anywhere, also.

I bet you have another great anecdote for why you got banned from a zoo.

My dad was once asked to leave a zoo because he punched a llama that spit at him.

It's just become an engrained response to things because of my anxiety disorder. I know logically that nothing is likely to happen to those websites, but logic doesn't always enter into anxiety. And I can just see your dad socking a llama in the side of its head...LOL

(I can't get this to "hide" behind a spoiler button so it's going to be a WALL OF TEXT. Sorry).I have a migraine starting up so I'll relate The Saga of Cal and Wolf vs The Silverback Gorilla in Memphis before I turn in.

In the summer of 1987 my friend from college, Wolf (short for Wolfgang) and I decided to hang out over the weekend and go to Memphis to the zoo, since neither of us had ever been there. (Incidentally Wolf was the DM who introduced me to AD&D 1e, so my being on the forum here is all his fault).

I drove from the town where I lived to his place, which was about two hours away and then we drove on to Memphis, about another hour or slightly less. Our wildlife adventure had just begun.

We toured all around the place and it was a pretty good zoo, especially given the time frame and that the push for zoo reform was just really getting started. We'd seen pretty much everything except for the primates so we headed into that area. We passed by the enclosures with monkeys, tamarins, and lemurs, which were all pretty interesting little critters. The last thing to see was on the way out of the primate house. There was an old silverback gorilla sitting inside the air conditioned part of his holding area (it opened up to a much larger area outside but he was no fool and took advantage of the cool air).

So Wolf and I stood there and if the gorilla met your gaze you knew there was something beyond just a "dumb animal" behind them. Looking into his eyes was a mesmerizing, primal experience. Then Wolf jarred me away from that and asked, "Hey, did you ever see the movie "Greystoke"?" I said I had and then asked, "Can you make that noise the apes in the movie did?" I said sure and I made this deep coughing sound from the back of my throat.

The gorilla, which had by this time turned his attention to something else, snapped his head around and stared straight at me. Wolf told me to do it again, so I did. Then Wolf made the same noise. Suddenly and faster than you can imagine something so large can move the old silverback flung himself toward us and slapped the plexiglass wall of his enclosure so hard it caused a hairline crack to spread out from the point of impact. Dust fell from around the edges of the window. Wolf, very softly and urgently said, "Let's go back and look at the turtles. They don't do this." We hurried out of the building.

Once outside, we laughed our nervousness away and looked around. We were next to a very large domed enclosure, covered in a heavy mesh. Inside was a troop of howler monkeys (you can see where this is going). Wolf asked, "Can you make a howler monkey noise?" By a strange coincidence I'd recently watched something about them on tv and I let out this very loud, long "whoop!" The effect on the howler monkeys was immediate, with them all shouting and whooping at me. Like an idiot I kept it up. Then suddenly a very angry man in a Memphis Zoo employee shirt stormed up to us and yelled at us to shut up.

When we did we could suddenly hear the big cats roaring from their area of the zoo. The guy, who was sooooo pissed off, told us that our howling had upset the big cats, who began roaring, which in turn frightened the herd animals in their big open area and made them start to run in frantic circles around the boundary of their enclosure. He demanded to see our driver's licenses and told us to go with him "RIGHT NOW".

We ended up in the main office of the zoo's employees and administrators. He made photocopies of our licenses, then circled the photos with a red marker. He then told us those photos would be posted at the gate and that we were banned from the Memphis Zoo for life. He and an actual security guard escorted us all the way to the car and waited for us to leave.

Wolf has actually been back there several times after he got out of the Navy and did some photography for a magazine about the zoo. My wife and I went just before our son was born in 1993, so I guess we'd been forgotten about. To this day I wonder what went through the zookeepers' minds when they saw the cracked plexiglass of the gorilla enclosure.

One of the best days of my life ever...lol

Yes, when he told me the story, he mimicked a roundhouse punch that was probably aimed at the llamas head. The llama apparently stumbled a few steps to the side.

It's funny as a story, but less so considering my dad had anger management issues. My mom was pretty embarrassed. That was before I was born.

Quote:

Hilarious story, although I do feel bad for those herd animals. And a stampede could have been pretty dangerous. And weaker plexiglasss could have been pretty dangerous for you guys!

That's all true. It definitely could have been a lot worse. We're lucky it didn't get that far, to be honest. But at least this way the story ends on a happier note than having a headline reading "Idiotic 20somethings Killed by Aggravated Gorilla".

Our game for this Saturday had to be rescheduled. It really needs our Druid player, who'll be out of town. I could probably work around it otherwise.

How about everyone else?

Had the day off, so I installed a storage rack in my garage and just generally straightened up in there. Then I played a video game all afternoon! Which I rarely get the time to do!

Tomorrow the kids each have a friend's birthday party to go to, and then Sunday we're going with another family to a nearby National Park's "recreation area" on the recommendation of the other family. I guess hiking? We'll find out!

I finished building a miniature castle.

Which is just phase one.

A perfectly square and level three sided wall is it's own reward.

Also I did it all myself in about a week.

At least phase 6, phases 2, 3, 4, and 5 are building a patio above the wall and stairs and then I have three separate inlay areas (one of which will utilize a 3-d pattern so it looks like a level from Q-Bert) I need to do before a ballista is installed.

I just build the castles, I don't arm them.

Turns out it was kayaking and fishing on top of the hiking. We had a great time, although we were all exhausted by the time we got home. I scrapped the plans I had to make dinner and we ordered a pizza!

Properly executed plan: went to see the animated The Transformers: the Movie for its 35th anniversary with my sister. Feels like watching old anime on the big screen, which is great. Sound needs work though. Had a nice lunch and called it an afternoon well spent.

I think this weekend is pretty clear. Not sure if we'll leave it that way and just watch movies/play board games.

We have a camping trip coming up next month, so to make sure the tent is still good, we'll be pitching it in the living room and sleeping in it Saturday night. The kids will love it. I will the opposite of that.

Otherwise, nothing special this weekend.

I have two of the inlay areas assembled waiting in the wings for me to cut out a place for them and we have a quarter (it's a really big patio!) of the main patio built.

Monday-Tuesday: I graded out and repeatedly compacted my base rock (can't compact natural stone pavers after they're installed so you gotta make sure everything is compacted really well before then).

Wednesday: 23 pallets of four different types of pavers were delivered and stone chips (in place of sand layer) layer added on top of my stone base.

Thursday: laid out and cut the areas I'll be inlaying and put them aside and then started laying out the main patio and bringing pavers down.

Friday: I got an assistant to help carry pavers and we got a whole bunch of pavers down, plus the college kid didn't break mentally trying to figure out the patterns (this is me, of course I'm going to use multiple patterns!).

I live in Houston. I have spent many a Christmas Day in t-shirts.

Well, one t-shirt.

But not the same t-shirt each year. A different t-shirt each time.

Probably.

Anyway, my living room smells like a campfire right now.

Hey, I'm not a masochist nor a fugitive! Camping in November is great, up north you might even be able to make a shelter out of snow!

Of course, down south, it's about the earliest you can go camping if you don't want to cook to death while sleeping.

Compacting is when you use a machine to smash the base rock into the ground, basically you're making it settle before the earth can do it for you.

A paver is basically just a brick you lay on the ground.

Welp, my game last night was going pretty well. The players finally figured out the adventure wasn't directly connected to the overall story arc as well as correctly deducing the First World (called the Eld in my setting) is rapidly breaching the veil between planes and is encroaching upon their world.

About 8 pm I took my dog for a walk and tried to hurry him along before a thunderstorm hit (we had some doozies last night) and in doing so I slipped on wet pavement and my left knee did something not normally allowed by physics and I barely made it the 50 or so yards back to the house. So we halted the game and what was supposed to be the end of this little arc will now be expanded to become our annual Halloween game instead. It should be interesting because I've been trying to use more Fey in this campaign than before and having some especially nasty Eldfolk running amok should be fun.
