Played another session of "Hellknight Hill" with my PF2 group last night. It was a lot of fun! We're getting much more used to the rules, and combat is really flowing well now.

My "Ultraviolet Grasslands" game that had been scheduled for tonight has been cancelled for lack of quorum: One of my players is out of state to attend a funeral, and one of my other players isn't feeling well.

I was hoping to get our remaining players together to play a session of an RPG optimized for one-shot play, such as Zombie World or For the Queen or Trophy Dark, but everyone else voted to take the night off.

Another half a foot of snow starting tomorrow night.

I'm starting to notice a theme.

No game here at Sweet Home Calabama this weekend, but how about the rest of us? My GF is coming down for the 3 day MLK weekend but we don't have any actual plans. Just hanging out, I guess.

Back to my work weekend, but planning on a late night showing of Weathering With You on Sunday after work. Sleeping in on a Monday will be nice. (Although I will have our pool guy by to drain and scrub the pool.)

Coolness, thanks! I didn't know it was an official creature, I thought it was something you homebrewed.

Bad on me for not checking Google. ^^

As for me, I'm working tomorrow until 5, but after that I'm going to a get-together, potluck, and 5e one-shot with about 2/3 of my own 5e group plus a bunch of folks from one player's other group. I'm playing a Scourge Aasimar Druid of Wildfire. Should be fun.

Let me know how your players fare against the Baetriov!

It's Friday once again, so how is everyone? What are your plans for the weekend? It's our "on" weekend, so Saturday all but two of my players are coming over for game night. One has a work-related event she has to attend and the other started a job back in October that won't schedule any Saturdays off, so we've missed having him in the circle.

So what about you guys?

Cal, how many people are in your Saturday group? For most of the groups I'm used to, two people not making it is a pretty big deal.

I feel like this is the first weekend since Thanksgiving where we don't have some event or family visiting. It's not, but it feels like it.

My group is currently 6 members. One of the ones who will be absent plays via Skype now, so the living room isn't too crowded. I'm able to usually run with two to three absent but it gets a little difficult with more than that.

I've only tried a video gaming session once, and this was back in the 2000s. One guy was travelling from work and was playing from his hotel room, but he kept falling asleep. He was tired, and it was hard for him to stay engaged without being around the table.

Sometimes she has the same problem with not being engaged like she would be if she were in the same room. She was a crucial member of our gaming group since 1990 or so and when she moved away she got out of gaming for a long time. She's moved closer to us again but still only gets to come down for a game two or three times a year. Skype is about the best way we've found for her to stay involved.

We're going out at 7 AM tomorrow, I expect I'll work at least 10-15 hours, depending on how many people show up, this is the third day in a row with snow after all, some are sure to drop off.

Also my you get to run a circus adventure should arrive tomorrow or Monday, pretty stoked for that.

I canceled my game for tonight. I didn't really want to, but I've been fighting depression and anxiety all week really hard and was just too worn out to run anything at all. The good news is I have had some days where those issues weren't all-consuming, so I think I'm crawling out of the pit. I just slide back a little from time to time.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

We have done two combats simultaneously over the course of four encounters. Encounter 1 ended, party 1 moved to encounter 3. Encounter 2 ended, party 2 moved to encounter 4. Now party 1 is moving to join encounter 4. Wild.

That sounds terrific!

There was a dragon. It failed a save against stunning fist while flying, then got a cone of cold to finish it off. Almost feel bad about it.

Well, my Ultraviolet Grasslands group just broke up due to two players having some bad stuff happen in their lives, and hot having the wherewithal to keep playing. That left me with just two players, one of which regularly has to bail with little notice due to last-minute work assignments.

I'm working to put together a new group. My goal for this new group will be to play a bunch of different RPGs of varying systems and genres. Some of these RPGs are designed to be played as one-shots; others are optimized for short miniseries of 4-8 sessions that tell a complete story.

I'm kind of excited about this prospect!

My Pathdinfer 2e: Age of Ashes game is plugging along nicely. We're on for tomorrow night.

I'm just waiting for The Show Must Go On to arrive in the mail this week so I can have everyone make characters for 2nd edition.

I did not care for Age of Ashes, so I can't wait to try out the new edition on something other than Fall of Plaguestone (a very good standalone adventure).

Yup, I absolutely love The Show Must Go On!

Hopefully it doesn't snow and everyone in the house recovers from their illnesses so we can make characters and possibly run through part one.

Tomorrow starts my work weekend. At least I have a couple tasks to make it go by quicker.

No game for us this weekend, as it's our off weekend, despite the fact I had to cancel last week's game. We try to stick to this schedule as two of my players live 2.5 hours away in Memphis, Tennessee and belong to a gaming club called F.O.R.G.E. (I can never remember what it stands for). Anyway, he was the president of the club for a couple of years and is the current vice president. As such, he has to be present for their game nights, which are always the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month. So we're just sticking to our schedule to make sure everyone who wants to play can be here.

Hey, everyone! What's in the works for your weekend? I'm going to try and run the game I was supposed to run 2 weeks ago before depression beat me into submission. I'm feeling much better this week so I think I can manage it. Still gotta hammer out the details for it, which I'll likely do tonight and tomorrow.

Oh, and a silent auction where I have to find the right balance when talking to my wife between "Sure, have fun," and "Come on, we will never use that."

Of all the rotten luck...

About 8 pm tonight I took a break in our game to take the dogs for their final walk of the evening. While out I suddenly felt like I'd been punched in the gut and got very sick. We made it back to the house where I threw up again.

I feel doubly bad since this is the first game we've had in quite a while because of my battles with depression. I felt great and had worked up a pretty good adventure. But after only 2 hours I had to shut everything down because I was feeling worse and worse. Three of my players drive from Memphis which is a 2.5-hour trip one way. And one of those guys rarely gets a chance to join us on a regular basis.

So here I sit, feeling like there's a hot brick in my stomach. I tried lying down and sleeping, but that was a waste of time. I feel just as bad flat of my back as I do sitting up. Plus it's easier for me to rush to the bathroom to howl into the toilet bowl than from getting up from a prone position.

Blech. I hope you all had a better evening!

Ugh, that sucks. Get well soon, hopefully.

Sorry to hear that, Cal. That sucks.

It looks like my new F2F group will be meeting tonight for the first time, although we'll be two people down. Instead of a Session Zero for the Monster of the Week minicampaign I want to run, I'm going to offer a choice of four one-shot RPGs: Zombie World, Fall of Magic, For the Queen, or Trophy Dark.

(I'm kind of hoping they'll want to play Trophy Dark. I've been itching to run this game for over a year, and still haven't brought it to the table.)

DungeonmasterCal wrote:

Just saw this. I hope it's nothing too serious. I don't know your situation, but I hope you're able to get to a doctor if needed. Good luck!

Thanks, everyone. It hit me and left me in about 18 hours. Aside from nausea and throwing up I didn't feel bad at all. It was pretty weird.

Howdy, everybody! What's the plan for this weekend? It's my group's off weekend and I'm dog sitting my ex's dogs until Monday. One of them will be 14 years old next month and her age has caught up with her. She's a purebred German shepherd, which is a breed that is often prone to hip problems as they age, and she certainly has them. She has to have help standing up from lying down and to go up and down the steps on my ex-wife's back deck. I'm in absolutely terrible shape and she's still quite a large, heavy dog. I thought I was going to have a heart attack last night getting her back up the steps. Oy.

Anyway, I hope everyone has a great weekend! Roll bones, build houses, drink until you're blind, whatever makes ya happy!

My wife and I have tickets to see the opera Dido & Aeneas by Henry Purcell Saturday night.

I'm also working on a game design contest: The Gauntlet RPG community is running a contest to write an Incursion (i.e. an adventure) for their in-house RPG Trophy Gold. I plan to do a fair amount of work on that.

Details about the contest in case anyone was interested.

The Gauntlet is also running a Kickstarter for Trophy. It's a really great game, and I'd encourage everyone to check it out!

The KS page includes a link to download the free, fully-playable initial version of Trophy. If nothing else, you should grab the game while it's free! (It's normally $6 on DriveThru and itch.io.)

(Full disclosure: I backed that KS at the $150 level.)

As for gaming the past week...

My new indie/story-game RPG group met for the first time! We ran a Session Zero for Monster of the Week. I'm planning this to be a 6-8 session miniseries. We did worldbuilding and character creation. The set-up: The PCs will be members of a world-spanning cabal of occultists called "The Invisible College" that was originally founded by John Dee circa 1500. The College is a Gnostic organization comprised of many Orders—The PCs are members of an arm that goes out into the world to deal with supernatural threats and to protect the "mundanes" from learning of the supernatural. To that end, the College has a separate order comprised of undercover agents who monitor media, civilian authorities, and the Internet to learn of such threats. The College has rivalry and opposition with other supernaturally-attuned organizations, including covens of vampires, hedge witches, and the US government's secret PSI Bureau.

My Pathfinder 2e game is coming up to the end of Age of Ashes. Our GM says we should finish up the module next session. We just made 4th level.

Let me tell you about my character:
Padrym Helmhold is a 4th level dwarf wizard (universalist). Originally from Janderhoff, he has focused his studies on the exploration of unknown places. Part of that study includes in-depth knowledge of underground construction and the mechanism and working of elaborate traps. [Thesis: Spell Substitution; Class Feats: Rogue Dedication; Trap Finder]

And I really have to plug the Android app Pathbuilder 2e: It's everything HeroLab Online should be, and it's a one-time $6 purchase.

It's snowed twice this week so I will also catch up on sleep.

It's a friend's birthday party, tonight. She wants everyone to go with her to a karaoke bar and sing, which half of us are dreading. Including me. It's not that I'm tone deaf, but I have do have trouble making my lungs and vocal cords carry a tune.

I've been Googling "easy karaoke songs," and Weezer's 'Buddy Holly' has come up in nearly every list.
