Maximum Character Limit On Posts?

Online Campaigns General Discussion

I have been trying to get a lengthy bit of setting information up under the Campaign Information Tab and I keep getting a 'Backtracking Error' when I try to post. Is this a problem with the maximum post count or is it an issue with taking too long to type?

Is there a maximum character count on posts and, if so, what is it?

Thanks in advance for any information you could give me on this.

I have never run into a character limit on a Campaign Information tab, but it may be there.

The obvious way to check is to write out your entire post on a text editor app, and the copy/paste it so you can see if it's a timing problem.

That is a fair point. I am curious about whether there is a text limit and what it may be though.

I ask because my campaign is going to be a planar West Marches-Living World hybrid. There are five separate tiers of character build rules ('street level characters' of level 8, 'heroic characters' of gestalt 12th level, 'movers and shakers' of gestalt 16th level with 5 mythic ranks, 'nearly gods' of gestalt 20th level with 10 mythic ranks and 'actual gods' of gestalt 40th level quadstalt with mandatory Godling levels, gestalt Mythic 10, and a slew of abilities based on domains chosen), a glut of new rules, a long list of 3PP content I am greenlighting for PCs to draw from, seven new races, and a lot of setting information. That's a lot of information and, even with spoilers dividing the sections, it may still break a character limit.

Have you considered storing the documents on another site (Dropbox, Google, etc) and simply linking to them from the campaign tab?

A lot of the games I play online use other sites for maps, various tracker spreadsheets, etc. If you're going to be storing the maps somewhere else, you might as well store those extra long documents as well.

I considered it, but my laptop only has regular Notepad since it got wiped and that is terrible for formatting text. That made the idea an unpleasant one.

If you aren't familiar with Google Docs, I suggest you give them a try.

While not quite as capable of layout and print-ready formatting, they work just fine for my usual document formatting needs.

You do need a Google/gmail account to use them yourself, but your players don't. They can follow the links and read the docs without ever signing in to Google.

Alternatively, LibreOffice is a terrific free document app that is as powerful as Microsoft Word for doing layout and formatting.

Thanks for all the help, CrystalSeas!
