1st official combat and I killed someone 1st round

Well the subject says it all....

We have been doing RPing and some minor combats up to this point and they finally arrive to the mine where most of this module takes placee. There is a surprise round and i randomly roll for who gets attacked. One player gets attacked by a goblin archer, and another by a charging goblin dog. both hit, the charging dog actually crits and confirms.

I feel terrible about this. This is my first PBP non-friend group game. What do you all do in this situation? They are all 1st level. Just looking for some tips, advice, etc.

Remember, in Pathfinder, it's very rare for a character to immediately die, especially if you're not using massive damage rules. I'd have the character drop unconscious and need to be stabilized/healed, but not in danger of outright dying yet.

Goblin dog charge bite hit, crit, and confirms. 16 total damage from bite for a max total of 20 damage.

8 HP with a 10 Con

Unless your players are hardcore for RAW, I'd have them unconscious 1 or 2 points above death. Maybe bleeding out if you want someone to stabilize them - say, if someone can use the Heal Skill or any cure power before their next turn, they can be saved before they're gone. It sounds like there was really nothing the player could have done to stay alive in this situation, and I think it's fine to at least offer the party a way to save them.

Yeah giving them a slight grace period...

But, I am a dummy.... I charged with the dog in a surprise round. That is a full round action... it never happened...

You can charge in a surprise round, you just can't move double speed.
