a human paladin with strength 14 and charisma 14 using power attack, mounted combat, ride-by attack, spirited charge, smite evil can charge and make a single attack.

attack bonus is +9 (5base+2strength+2charge+2smiteevil-2powerattack).

damage is 3d8+42 (1d8lance+3strength+6powerattack+5smiteevilx3spiritedcharge), for a range of 45 to 66.

wow.

on a critical hit our paladin does triple damage, or 9d8+126, for a range of 135 to 198.

wow.

have i made a mistake or overlooked something?

One mistake is the critical. Criticals do not multiply multipliers. So, a crit would do 4d8+56.

Yeah the way "multipliers" work in pathfinder is actually as "adders".

X2 multiplier means +100%
X3 multiplier means +200%
X4 multiplier means +300%
X5 multiplier means +400%
X6 multiplier means +500%
X7 multiplier means +600%
X8 multiplier means +700%
X9 multiplier means +800%
X10 multiplier means +900%
(If you somehow manage more than that I'll be impressed, but I'm sure you can work it out).

So you have a X3 multiplier (+200%) and another X3 multiplier (+200%), which brings you to +400%, or original damage X5.
For the record I worked out the critical as 5d8 + 70 damage (I think thorin001 missed the X3 critical multiplier on a lance).

Liberty's Edge

I'm currently playing a gnome paladin, level 11. With the lance, my normal damage on a charge is 3d6 + 42. If I landed a critical hit (I haven't yet, even with a keen lance) it would be 5d6 + 70. My very first attack with this PC was against an undead smite target (I was 10th level). It landed for 114 points of damage (3d6 + 102).

Regrettably, the target was incorporeal, so it took only 57.

Liberty's Edge

A Cavalier can pump out the same damage as the Paladin in the OP. In the damage and to-hit section, take out the 5-SmiteEvil and and replace it with 5-Challenge. Attack bonuses come out much the same, as some Cavalier Orders give equivalent, larger or smaller attack plusses. It averages out about the same.

Note that Challenge can be applied to more types of critters than SmiteEvil.

Yeah, lance builds can deal some crazy damage. They're can be mitigated by having small rooms and generally being inside for a lot of combats (from a GM perspective).

As a GM, I generally encourage players to play this type of character because it will tend to be reduced in effectiveness due to terrain and space constraints.

Liberty's Edge

Lance builds are sort of all-or-nothing.
You get the charge in once per combat, on average. And it takes a lot of feats to get going.

Mounted Attack
* Ride-by Attack
* * Spirited Attack

That gets you to 3x damage, but you are going to want Wheeling Charge (BAB +5) and Phalanx Formation to enable the charge. (Wheeling makes it much easier to charge, Phalanx voids the -4 for soft cover if your buddies are in 5' melee with the enemy.) Not to mention Power Attack.

I just wanted to make this correction.

Man, some days your hands just kind of seem to type autonomously.
