Hey folks, I chatted with the rest of the team, and we're on board with applying this boon to grizzly bears as well. In the next Additional Resources update (for which we finished a large content review meeting today for the next update) we'll be adding the following line to the Ultimate Wilderness entry: A grizzly bear animal companion can qualify for and be subject to boons as though it were a bear animal companion.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is what was required to make this legal.

Now go forth and exercise your right to bear arms.

Nifty.

I assume no rebuilds for current regular-Bears?

I'd treat it as though you had swapped out your current animal companion for a new one, which means you'll need to teach the new owlbear some tricks over the course of that first scenario or two.

Of course, how you want to imagine that in-game is your call. If you want Cap'n Screechy to be your beloved animal companion, you're more than welcome to name the revised owlbear Cap'n Screechy and claim the original recipe owlbear experienced a growth spurt that made him forget a few of his "please stop killing people when I ask nicely" tricks.

Also, don't forget that you don't need to worry too much about reselling barding either, thanks to a FAQ update Linda made a little while ago.

That was my next question. I was unaware of that FAQ.

Thanks!

Rejoice! Time to swap out my regular ol' bear miniature for a genuine Large owlbear miniature!

Thank you and the rest of the team for taking it under consideration.

Yes. The Boon modifies a Bear you already have access to.

In the CORE Campaign, that would only be a Druid.

In STANDARD, which book unlocks additional animal companions to rangers then?

Hello John.

I'm a Lunar Oracle.

May Lunar oracles also have grizzlies, so that Hoot could get a growth spurt? Or will my Hoot have to remain an Owlbear cub?

Hmm

Much rejoicing. However, I have a follow-on question. Looking forward to level 10ish, how would Mammoth Rider interact with the Owlbear Companion Boon? As written, the Mammoth Rider can only choose from a small list of companions. This list includes a large bear (Dire Polar), but doesn't contain any of the legal bases for an Owlbear Boon.

Can we use our Large Grizzly Bear (Owlbear) as the continuing basis?

So much this!

Well darn, I don't feel special with my large sized owlbear mount anymore now that everyone has one. 8(

So, ignoring my special flower complaints for now,

I have a beastrider cavalier, with the bear cum owlbear boon mount.

Original (owl) Bear:
Start: small, Str15, Dex15, Con13, Int2, Wis12, Cha10, +2 natural AC
@ lvl4: med, Str19, Dex13, Con17, Int2, Wis12, Cha10, +2 natural AC
archetype @7: large, Str21, Dex11, Con19, Int2, Wis12, Cha10, +2 natural AC
final @7: large, Str21, Dex11, Con19, Int2, Wis12, Cha10, +2 natural AC

Grizzly (owl) Bear:
Starts: med, Str17, Dex13, Con13, Int2, Wis13, Cha10, +1 natural AC
@ lvl7: large, Str21, Dex11, Con17, Int2, Wis13, Cha10, +4 natural AC
archetype: (no change)
final @7: large, Str21, Dex11, Con17, Int2, Wis13, Cha10, +4 natural AC

So comparing the two variations, my question would be:
Is the 2 points of con worth one point of wisdom and 2 points of natural AC

It just boils down to +1hp/HD and +1 Fort vs +2 AC. Sounds like a personal preference thing.

Kewl. This is good news. I didn't read this entire thread so I don't know if it was ever mentioned, but a Hunter with a bear companion and the owlbear boon can have a Large owlbear companion by casting Animal Growth on it. If I read the rules correctly, that spell is a Druid spell that Hunters have access to and the boon specifically notes that the owlbear is treated as an animal for all purposes. The drawbacks to that are obviously that the spell isn't permanent and it is costly if you need to buy a scroll of it. That was going to be my character's tactic until this posting.
Sweet. Thanks to Mr Compton and the rest of the team.

Well, they're still treated as an animal companion, and...

Animal Companions wrote:
Share Spells (Ex): The druid may cast a spell with a target of "You" on her animal companion (as a spell with a range of touch) instead of on herself. A druid may cast spells on her animal companion even if the spells normally do not affect creatures of the companion's type (animal). Spells cast in this way must come from a class that grants an animal companion. This ability does not allow the animal to share abilities that are not spells, even if they function like spells.

Even if the owlbear was only treated as a magical beast, you can still cast animal growth on your own companion anyways, as well as spells like reduce/enlarge person that only affect humanoids.
