If any class has "mounted combat as its schtick, it should be the cavalier" but it's the one class where stuff like "we're going to be in a lot of rich people's houses΅ as a campaign theme is going to be disqualifying (though the gunslinger probably isn't welcome in games about •robbing• those people's houses, but that's just because "guns are loud".)
I definitely agree with "the cavalier should be built with a lot of games will be unsuited to mounted combat" in mind. Giving an option for a non-mounted Knight with a cause is something I will heavily support. Maybe have this be an archetype, maybe have a setup where you choose mounted combat as a focus or another style at first level. Also, clear up mounted combat rules when the class is released please. If they are clean in the core, awesome. Otherwise include something when a mount-focus is released about how everything mounted works.
I'd like cavalier in 2e to not be mount-focused only. However, I have to admit—we have had a long outcry for a "Warlord" type class. Warlord could be a great archetype, and help those of us waiting for cavalier.

Warlord fits many niches: Warlord Bard (you could make a Skald with this), Warlord Paladin (ultimate party support, or holy cavalier!), Warlord Fighter (party support fighter, or cavalier lite when combined with Nature skill), Warlord Ranger (the ultimate support-scout or ambush leader).

Because it enables so many concepts, would enable a stopgap for things like cavalier, and would be easier to get than a class, I'd consider pushing for a Warlord archetype. Using Warlord and working with a Fighter (with Nature concentration to give it an AC)'d be servicable. Cavalier isn't going to come immediately.

I'm just putting this forward as someone who also loves cavalier, and other classes that we may not see for a while. It's a way we can all win. I've seen posts (not in this thread) that declared: "I want to change the base meaning of a class that's important to many, because I personally don't want to wait for the class I do want." That's the wrong approach.
I love the cavalier. However, I have to admit--we have had a long outcry for a "Warlord" type class.
Challenge: I don't know the math of 2e so I cannot comment on how damage should work but making you flatfooted against any enemy but the target of the challenge sounds thematic and cool.

Tactician: I'd like a change to tactician, what about giving up an action to let a companion take one action on the cavalier's turn, maybe in later levels the cavalier can give a bonus to the companion's action like move an extra 5 feet or a bonus to hit.

Orders: They are thematically cool so no complains there.

Mount: Why can't my halfling choose a dog at lvl 1? why cant my Orc choose a boar?
I am of half a mind that the mounted cavalier should be an archetype, but with all the modularity I expect from 2e I hope that it will be optional along with all the charges.

Banner: Awesome idea, but why only fear saves and not all will saves?
Just things I'd like to see in the 2e Cavalier:
