Immunity + protection from

Rules Questions

Ciao everyone!

One (subtle) question between me and the other players:
Does protection from evil grant total immunity vs. (certain) mental effects?
And if so, is it regardless of when it is cast?
I'm especially talking about the 2nd item listed in the description, where it is not clear wether the protective effect starts only after you pass the 2nd SR granted by the spell (in case you fail that of a mind affecting spell) or of it is fully active for all the spell duration.

Thanks!

Protection from Evil does not prevent you from a Dominate spell. You still need to make a saving throw. It does protect from the exercise of mental control.

This spell does not give SR (Spell Resistance). It can grant a second saving throw.

When the spell is cast, if the subject is under the effects of an appropriate effect, they get an immediate chance to save again at +2 if they got a saving throw initially. This particular save, if made, will suppress the effect, and not remove it. It also only applies if the source is evil.

I understood it that you only get a second save vs mental contraol if you cast the spell AFTER someone got dominated.

If you do it in advance you actually ARE protected against it. (only if the caster was evil of course)

Yep. Being under the effect of the Dominate when the PfE is cast gives the extra save.

Not quite. You still would need to save vs, Dominate, and if you fail, then the Dominate sticks. They just cannot use it until the Pfe ends.

Well maybe its correct to say the protection from evil "supresses" the effect of the mindcontrol for its duration?

While under the effects of this spell, the target is immune to any new attempts to possess or exercise mental control over the target.

'Dominate' is an attempt to exercise mental control over you. If someone evil tries to dominate you while you're under Protection from Evil, you are immune.

Cevah's interpretation seems overly complicated to me. (But we've had this debate before and I doubt we have anything new to say on the subject.)

Just looked at the thread you linked. It covers the subject pretty well. We disagree on how PfE works, but all the arguments are there.

It isn't really overly complicated. If protection from evil wears off before dominate whatever does, it matters quite a bit.
