Androids and Eox

General Discussion

Hi everyone, would appreciate your sage advice and suggestions on the following problem:

“Dax” an Android Operative in our Starfinder Home Canpaign would like his back story to include something like “from back in the day when Eox — faced with destruction of their civilization dabbled in android fabrication — a scheme which clearly lost out to be necromantic arts.

Our player was thinking that he read about this somewhere.

Regardless of whether he did or not, I had a couple of ideas to spins something into our story which seems plausible:

1) A lesser bone mage (long since our of power or re-deceased) did dabble in this when a shortage of reanimating energy threatened the loss of Eoxian entities.

2) Androids were created as a stock pile of compatible body parts for the Eoxian who lost a limb and wanted a replacement which exactly matched dimensions or specifications. (I don’t like this one as well — because why wouldn’t they just do some necromatic regrowth or something).

Appreciate any thoughts :)

In the setting Eox destroyed itself somewhere around 50,000 years ago. So even if the Android's shell dates to that period there isn't a very good way to explain how it isn't in a museum of some uber powerful bone sage somewhere as a priceless artefact. Most Android souls only hang around for a century or two before they recycle new souls and lives into the shells as well which would be awkward to explain how the current PC even knows about it's creation. There might be an actual timeline from Pathfinder that shows just when Eox blew itself up but it was the same event that destroyed two other planets in the system and I am pretty sure it was all back in the "pre-history" days of Golarion.

If then played just wants a shell from Eox, that's easy, maybe a bone sage was experimenting with a full body housing for its soul and got bored with the idea, leaving an android shell that looks like an Elebrian laying around until a new soul inhabited it.

Of course, this is a home campaign so you could just go with it, an experimental shell housed an Elebrian soul and left locked up for tens of thousands of years before it was able to free itself.

Androids are part biological and can become undead. There are a substantial number of them on Eox, and there are most certainly Bone Sages who are experimenting with the technological aspects of undeath. This has been happening since the Gap and probably well back into it at the very least. In-canon (to whatever extent that matters to you or your group) I don't think androids were ever contemplated as a large-scale civilizational strategy for Eox, but all sorts of android backstories are possible on Eox.

While Androids in the *current* period have effectively unlimited life spans, they did not always. In the past (re: in Pathfinder), androids lived about as long as humans before their bodies started breaking down and they needed to recycle. Modern technology is what allows them to live forever.

So, an android being 300 years old is conceivable, but 20,000 years old? Ehhh...

Androffan pattern Androids on old Golarion had those limits but an Eoxian experimental shell? Who knows when it was built or how well it has held up over time. Effectively the player wants to be an Elebrian looking shell though if they want to play the same soul as from tens of thousands of years ago that could be an odd disconnect for a level 1 character.

I don't see any issue with the aesthetic look of your android. I play as an android that looks like a skeletal kasatha that came from Eox.

It's a glorified robot, albeit one with a soul of sorts. It can look like anything, it can be as old as you want, and it can be level 1 just fine if say it was rebuilt recently or it was just "in storage" in a vault sealed from the elements all this time.

I can see the Android Liberation Front still has some hearts-and-minds work to do... ;)

Hearts, minds, lungs, centers of mass or other vital organs as the shot is available.

Hey, it's magiscience, we can come up with a good reason for anything with enough time. Just need to make sure they're good reasons.

I'm all for taking the stats of one race and saying it's something else. The idea just doesn't *quite* fit the established history for Androids as a race. But different strokes for different folks.
