Construct as a PC

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Hi all. Need some advice on my upcoming strange aeons campaign. One of my players wants to play as a wyrdwood which is fine except...

How do I deal with it if the player dies.

Spells like Resurrection, True Res or even Raise Dead don't work.

Repairing damage to a construct requires the craft construct feat which in some areas you could argue there would be someone there who could that (e.g. where Biting Lash is as big city) except....

According to the background in the bestiary wyrdwood are very secretive about themselves and their construction so I am left with the idea that the only person who could craft construct on a wyrdwood is another wyrdwood. But then again as far as I see it how likely is it that there would be other wyrdwoods in the areas that strange aeons take you through (e.g. can't imagine there'd be any in the asylum, could see some in Thrushmoor at a push).

Does anyone have any ideas.

Destroyed constructs can be brought back with Memory of Function, but that's a 7th level spell.

The spells Make Whole, Greater Make Whole, and Rapid Repair can heal Constructs.

Essentially, "If he dies, he DIES!".

Really, you have hit upon one of the balancing weaknesses of the Wyrdwood race. As LeMoineNoir indicated, Memory of Function works (and so does Wish/Miracle) but not much else.

Give the rest of the party a special quest to bring him back. Some MacGuffin that can restore him that takes a session to get while he plays an NPC for that time.

At the end if the day, it really does come down to this. Make sure the players knows this before going in.

The make whole spell heals constructs.

Having said that, I recommend Book of Heroic Races: Advanced Wyrwoods , published by my company. It is filled with archetypes, spells, and other class options to help keep wyrwoods functional (they're not alive so functional is the word) longer and be more thematic for the race. We even included spells to heal constructs.

If your group regularly plays the more exotic races, I recommend checking out the Book of Heroic Races: Advanced Compendium. It includes Advanced Wyrwoods as well as 11 other races like catfolk, changelings, tengu, lizardfolk and more.

Without spoiling things too much, book 3 will give him some opportunities to die without "really" dying. You might be able to use that to help drive home death for him. (assuming he lives to that point). While everyone else wakes up carrying the penalties the adventure gives, have him take longer. Don't force him to sit out something interesting, (unless the player would be cool with it), but perhaps say: "It seems that while the rest of you have woken, the wyrwood remains deep in some sort of torpor; he registers as functional, but only just so. Fortunately, the rest of the day is without incident, as is the night. And on the next morning, the light creaking sound of living wood indicates that the wyrwood awakens with you once more!"

Make it obvious that death is a bigger deal for him, that he needs to be careful. Just my two penny thoughts.
