Any one else new to PF or returning to PF to look at 2E?

A lot of the threads here seem to be from existing PF players. I was just wondering if anyone else, like me, is not currently playing PF but is here to check out 2E.

I think it would help Paizo to know how many new people they are drawing in (or like me back in) because of the possibilities of 2E. I liked PF 1E but the math outweighed the fun for me after a few years.

If 2E fixes that I may start playing PF again in August. My group loves playtesting so they would be onboard as well.

Why did 2E interest me? The promise to remove the Christmas tree effect but keep character creation options, the possibility of reduced complexity in creating NPCs/monsters, the change to actions in combat while keeping fights tactically full, and adding in the alchemist and goblin to make PF its own unique system.

I like the idea of starting fresh again. And the possiblity of great 3rd party support. I also want to create my own world to game in and PF would be great for that if I don't feel like I'm fighting with the rules.

Yup I went 5e cos of the grind of math and slow combats. I'd even deleted the Paizo forums from my favourites tab. But this has brought me back in, as I love the options of PF. So watching excitedly, what has been said so far seems like PF2 is more for me (options but simplicity) than it is for hardcore 3.x/PF1 players!

Yup. I left PF about four years ago. Hit 5e and never looked back.

I tried SF when it came out, and despite the improvements to the system, we still didn't last longer than a few months playing it. It, too, was bogged down by the massive amount of rules in the system. The constant reference to the books to see if we were doing it right.

Just before SF came out, we tried PF to "get used to the system again." We last two sessions before quitting.

I'm just not a fan, at all.

But, I like Paizo as a company, so I'm willing to give PF2 a shot. I'll be purchasing the playtest book when the pre-orders come about.

What I'm really hoping for in the system is a change in culture from "rules focus" to "play or rulings focus." A change from a focus on minutea in rules and +1 hunting in chargen to personality and motivation focused character building. A change from the false narrative of "options" that aren't really meaningful options (especially when 90% of the options you have go away once you pick your first feat), to fewer meaninglu options that have an actual impact on gameplay.

They did a fantastic job striking down some of my complaints when SF came out - especially revolving around feat trees. I hope they keep going along that path.

I'm a big 5e player, but I also enjoy the whole "character building mini-game" aspect of RPGs, and I feel like 5e kind of falls down in that department. I'd like PF 2.0 to give me that more complex character building element while still retaining the ease of play I've gotten from 5e.

*Raises hand* Me!

I really liked Pathfinder when I got the chance to see it. However, it felt too heavy to DM - and I'm almost always the DM. The balance? Pathfinder improved a lot when it comes to caster dominance (compared to 3.X), but not enough for my taste.
But now? It seems that all of that will be fixed!
I don't know if I have the stomach to another public playtest; I've bad memories from D&D Next's playtest. But I want to check out what this will become :)

My personal recommendation based on Pathfinder's original beta test:

Playtest the rules, but don't read most of the threads. Sure, look at the posts/info that the Design Team puts out, but don't dig through the threads. Post your own threads of the feedback you have, and hide from the forums otherwise.

Maybe this time will be better. I hope so!

That's actually a pretty good idea. WotC's forums did suck a lot of my enthusiasm. It also had a lot to do with the company itself, in matters I'll not say here. I hope that, with Paizo, things will go better ^^

For the most part I enjoyed the original playtest of PF1. The Devs responded a lot, and things changed. The problem I ran into were two or three excessively active posters who would browbeat others with walls of text and sheer toxicity. The ones who believed that only their way was right, and would drown you out with waves of posts. It was... unpleasant and frustrating. It was one of those people who drove me out of the playtest by... I think it was the third round of changes, in November? It's been a while.

Things have changed since then. We have the flagging system, so I don't respond to things like that anymore. I just flag it and move on. I like how the moderation of the forums have changed. While I dislike that they have to remove posts, people like the individual in question would've been shut down early on, and that would've helped.

So... we'll see. I still get a nervous tic in my eye whenever I see the particular poster's avatar, though. It isn't used much, fortunately.

I prefer Pathfinder but everyone else in my gaming group prefers DnD 5e so that is what I have been playing lately. I am hopeful that PF 2e will be simplified enough to draw some of the group back to PF without loosing all of the good crunch and customization options that makes me prefer PF 1e to DnD 5e in the first place.

I'm returning to the forums somewhat. A while ago I was fairly active commenting and reviewing third party material but I had a broken computer graduated and got a job with inconvenient hours. During this time I also branched off into other RPGs because my usual playgroup isn't around during my days off and 5e among other games are an easier sell just for simplicity. Lately I've just been playing with my wife in other systems.

But while I admit D&D is easier and plays smoothly I don't consider myself to have jumped ship. With people who pay attention enough or bother to read and understand the rules I rarely come across all these problems people have with the system, and the ones that do persist are overcome by third party material. But I don't have those players and my wife sucks at even medium crunch so it's been 5e. And it's a pain in the ass. Binary skills lackluster options. I just feel like it's interesting the first time around but I have nothing to go back to.

PF2e seems right up between Pathfinder and 5e so when the playtest comes out I'll be recording me and my wife playing and learning the game as my part in participating in the playtest.
