This is awesome. This is like the best news for RPG in 2018 so far. I am happy. And I want o know if there are any plans to do the other APs? (the old ones, and the ones to comes?)

I did Iron Gods on Roll 20, and now I'm planning Curse of the Crimmson Throne. Seeing that news made me really happy.

Oh sorry I was not in the right section. Yes I did indeed saw this post, but it is so far very unclear on what products we can except so I was trying to fish for informations!

Can we hope the other AP (and most notably the old ones, because I think it'll come for the news ones and Starfinder)? Or is it too soon to say anything more than in this post?

Roll20's license allows them to do pretty much anything we've published—determining what they should prioritize is largely up to them. (I expect if they hear the same requests from a lot of customers, they'll probably listen...)

Thanks for the quick informations! I indeed think that a lots of us were hoping for a news like that for a long time. Even more when we got splited groups. It is also very usefull when you're not (like me) an Enligsh or an American citizen, and that English is not your mother tongue. Having the all game "prepared" can reduce a lot the amount of work we got to do.

PS: This new website is just lovely.

So excited to learn about this! I don't even dare to count the hours I have put into setting up encounters on roll20...

Is there anything you can tell us about discounts for Pathfinder subscribers? I know that Fantasy Grounds lets you link your paizo account and gives you X % off any VTT product that you also own as a pdf. Anything like this planned for roll20 to your knowledge?

I'm just happy about this even if there won't be discounts

Finally I can throw my money at paizo and nothing is stopping me!(besides my wallet)

I"d love to see the discount structure, before I even know what products are being ported.

This has made me ridiculously happy!! As a long time user of roll20 I was very much hoping to see this happen. Now if you could of only done this a few weeks ago before I started my new campaign.. but love it regardless!

Can't wait for the Starfinder stuff to show up. I am assuming it will start with the next AP. Very much looking forward to it.

I am curious. Will those of us who are subscribers who already have the PDFs need to re-purchase them in Roll20 or will some kind of discount be offered? I know fantasy grounds does something like this for those who already own the product.

As things look right now there's no connection at all, but I'm hoping we'll hear something from Paizo about this soon. For me the big win from this is having maps that will line up properly with the grid in Roll20, but if its gonna cost me $28/chapter for that in addition to what I'm already paying then its not worth it.

There's actually a pretty easy way to do that right now. PM me if you want the step-by-step instructions.

Out of curiosity, is there any plans, that you are able to discuss, for any kind of discount for those who have purchased the product from Paizo that can be redeemed against the Roll20 product? I'm trying to decide whether to purchase the first part of Crownfall or wait for the Roll20 release, essentially.

I’d love to know how to do this quickly and easily, since align to grid in Roll20 never works right and I have to spend up to 10 minutes per map getting the lines lined up.

While I'm very happy to see official Paizo content coming to Roll20, I am a bit disturbed at how quiet Paizo is being about it. Considering that the last Orr report listed over 9800 Pathfinder campaigns and over 25000 players on Roll20, you would think Paizo would at least say something on the blog about it? VTT is a huge advantage to those of us without a local group or who have had regular players scatter geographically, and full official support of it is a major time saving. So, why did I have to find out about it from Polygon instead of either Paizo or Roll20? Seems like a missed opportunity for more sales and publicity.

Roll20 blog DID mention it though and its still on front page of roll20 news as far as I can see

Roll20 announced it on Tuesday, and Paizo had a press release the same day. I just never saw it until I went looking for it because you can't find the news anymore since the site upgrade.

Yeah I would of thought it would have warranted a Paizo blog post for sure. Regardless there is indeed a robust Pathfinder and Starfinder community on Roll20. This and has been my main go to for RPGs since getting old and having my gaming group grow up and move all over the country. VTT's have been a God send to us older gamers who grew up and have busy lives. While I much prefer classic sit down the chances of getting all my friends in one place, with all our kids, jobs, lives not getting in the way is a miracle. Roll20 gives us the ability to still game from the comfort of our respective homes once a week and I love it!. So happy to see this come for Roll20 I personally have been waiting for this for a long time as Roll20 is by far my favorite VTT. I really hope to see Paizo push this and the partnership between them and Paizo grow into a profitable one. VERY much looking forward to the Starfinder stuff coming out as I just finished my last Pathfinder campaign and have recently began the Dead Suns Starfinder campaign for my group.

I would guess that Paizo is waiting to make a blog post until they actually have something to announce in regard to pricing, possible discounts for already-owned products, etc. Then again, maybe the site upgrade just has them too busy for now.

Well, the first time is going to take a few minutes, but you only have to do it once.

Prep:
Be sure you have a .jpg file of your map on your desktop (or buried however deeply in your file system as you want).

Open your Roll20 account.
Launch the game you're prepping.
Click the blue "Page Toolbar" at the top of the screen.
Click "Create New Page"
Click on the new page to place it in the work area.

On your browser bar, click to resize the browser screen.
Make it small enough that you can click on the .jpg file of your map
Do not open the map file, just be able to click and drag.

Drag the map from your desktop and drop it on the new page.
Roll20 will upload the file.

Change your browser window back to full screen, since everything else happens on the Roll20 screen

Right click on the map
On the popup menu select "Layer"
Click "Map Layer"

This makes sure you have the map on the map layer, not the token layer or the gm layer.

On the floating toolbar on the left of your screen, click the second icon, a map place icon
Click "Map and Background"

At this point you should have the map image visible, with a square grid overlay. Don't try to match them up.

If you like you can play with the mouse pointer icon on the toolbar (the top icon) and use it to move the map around, but that's not the way to align the map to the grid.

Click the magnifying glass icon on the toolbar
Set the magnification to 150%

Right click on the map
Choose "Advanced; Align To Grid" from the popup menu

Looking at the map grid, not the Roll20 grid, drag to create a 3 x 3 selection. Don't worry if it's all rectangles. That's what we're fixing.

Ignore the popup window contents and click "Align To Grid"
If you messed up, click "Try Again", and keep selecting until you have selected properly.

Click the mouse pointer icon on the floating toolbar.
Grab the map and align ONE corner of ONE map square to the corner of the Roll20 grid.
Be sure you're holding down the Alt key when you drop the map. If you don't it will snap back to its earlier position.

Examine that square, and note whether the map grid is too narrow, too wide, too tall or too short.

Right click the map
Select "Align To Grid: Set Dimensions"

Be sure you're working with pixels
Change the pixel dimensions to fix the problems you saw.
Too short? Add height pixels.
Too tall? Subtract some height pixels

Click "Set"

Examine the map again.
You may need to realign it with the mouse pointer icon.

Repeat the Set Dimensions step until you're happy.
Write down these dimensions on your GM notes so you don't have to go through this ever again with this map

Trick:
You will, at some point, accidentally move the map off the grid.
Just use the mouse pointer to realign it.

BUT
Hold down the Alt key while realigning.
If you just move the map around with the mouse pointer, it won't stay where you drop it.

This is part of the free user package, so you don't have to subscribe to Roll20 to be able to do this.

Your method is basically what I use however there is even an easier way. Once the map is on the map layer drag it to the top right corner of your Roll20 Grid. Select the map and then one corner of the map while holding the Alt (windows) or Option (mac) key and then drag to resize the map until the size of the grid on the map is nearly the right size of the grid on the roll20 map. from there follow the align to grid instructions as per above. However after you have aligned to grid, instead of messing with setting dimensions you can simply select the map and while holding the Alt or Option Keys physically drag the top, bottom or side of the map to stretch it into alignment as needed. If you scaled the map close enough after the aligning it to grid it should only be very slightly off requiring only minor stretching to fit.

One other tip is if you have your map jpg uploaded to roll20, when you drag the image into the map layer be sure to be holding the Alt or Option Key. This will allow the map to retain its original dimensions and avoid any unnecessary warping.

Yeah, grabbing the edges and dragging them is the quick and dirty method that I use when 'good enough' is good enough.

Or you can go all fiddly and make everything fit to the exact pixel.

If you do the "grab the edges" style, you can still use the "Advanced: Set Dimensions" screen to find out the pixel size of a map grid, and then you can quickly reset any future uses of the map by typing that in.

First set up is tedious, but by writing down the dimensions, you can blaze through future map setups.

And for those who don't know, clicking the gear icon next to the page in the page toolbar gives access to page settings.

If you're missing part of your map after uploading, adjust the size of the page in the page settings to bring it back into view.

Liberty's Edge

This whole process and what a pain it is, is what's basically gotten me to give up on VTTs, or at least Roll20 specifically.

Well, it is a wall-o-text, but that's because i got way down in the details.

It's actually about a 2 minute action when you know how to do it.

What I do beforehand is try to find out how many squares the map is to begin with (if the original creator/publisher of the map did not provide the dimensions, I try to just count the number of visible squares length-wise and height-wise). That usually is all I need since I can use the "Set Dimensions" functionality to automatically resize the map and 90% of the time, it works perfectly.

However, in many cases (especially with older maps), it's hard because either the dimensions were not provided OR contrary to first glance, the "grid" on the original map are not actually aligned properly (or spaced evenly across the board, so you have some squares that are smaller or larger than others). The former situation is a matter of trial and error as described above by CrystalSeas and Vexies, while the latter...well, it's impossible and you are better off not using the grid system of Roll20 (or any other vtt system in existence) as they cannot fix the actual cartography problem - just keep the grid system off for that page and make sure your players are aware of it and manually count the squares as you normally would for a physical battle map.

The hardest maps for me to align properly are usually massive maps, like the castle map from Kobold Press' Courts of the Shadow Fey. Maps that spans 100 units in either length or height dimensions take longer to load. My worst headache was when I did my own version of an abandoned town for the pcs to explore building by building (if they wished) when I ran Vanishing of Varnhold (because the original map was...sorely lacking for a small town). I actually crashed the browser on multiple occasions from just attempting to load the massive map (over 200 units for both length and height - I didn't know how to use GIMP at the time to put multiple maps and map objects together to create a single image so I used Roll20 to do that....what a nightmare that was).

Anyways, all that aside, I also look forward to learning more about the Pathfinder/Starfinder official content that will be hosted on Roll20. I hope it will be easy to customize (by removing or adding content) the adventures - I do a lot of "editing" of the adventures from Paizo (and 3rd Party Publishers) to make them fit for my campaign. ;)

Cheers!

I created a post because I thought that there was not enough publicity for it outside Roll20. I asked also a few questions to the Roll 20 What’s up we will see if I got any answers in their next stream.

This is so awesome. For my part I am used to draw (very very roughly and badly) the map. But I use all the artwork from the PDFs. But having all the material at disposal could be very good, both for Paizo & Roll20. Let’s hope this will continue to grow in the following years.

If it is like DND don’t forget we got the all adventures with the text and the stories and the chapters and artworks I believe (got to have a confirmation on that one but I think that it’s the case).

I will buy Crown. Just because I want the first product to work well. But I understand that it is not a possibility for all of us.

Yeaaaaaaah, setting maps to VTT grid takes only like a minute <_< It sounds way more complicated than it actually is and there are multiple methods for it. Size of the grid on the map doesn't matter either, 10 ft, 20 ft and 5 ft maps are done same way.

Liberty's Edge

I haven't succeeded a single time I've tried. I gave up.

Samy wrote:

Oh, you're *perfect*!!

Could I persuade you, sometime when you've got a few (10-15) minutes, to print out my instructions and try to follow them?

It would be nice to have someone who can't do this try them step-by-step and see if there are any holes. Like a beginner cook trying to follow a recipe.

It's really hard for those of us who find it easy to test these things. We tend to auto-fill any gaps.

Don't know what I can offer you in return, but if there's something, let me know.

Liberty's Edge

I'll give it a try at some point. Thanks for writing them up, maybe I can finally get it working.

I do have to note that method has more steps than one I use.

I just put map on the grid, change color of grid so its easier to tell from the map grid, use alt plus mouse to align most upper left square on the map with the grid then I resize one corned of the map until it aligns with the grid and then I align the other and repeat until I have it right. if map is 10 ft map, I change settings "unit is 10 ft, grid size 0.5"

CorvusMask wrote:
like, I don't see how changing size of browser window would help at all

Notice that the step that uses the resized browser window is the step where you move the map from your desktop to the Roll20 map page.

It's how you upload a map to Roll20.

Dark Archive

Pathfinder Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

Geezus, you post fast, I was editing my post since I figured out I don't want to bother on commenting every step of that guide since I have hard time visualizing it. Like I have no clue why you would move the map to the desktop and then to the browser instead of straight from the File Explorer.

CorvusMask wrote:
straight from the files.

Because not everyone starts with the files already being on Roll20.

Sometimes you extract the map from your PDF and then upload it to Roll20.

If you are just starting using Roll20, you may want to upload the map from the module you're running.

And learning how to find assets, which may not even be available to free accounts, can take a lot longer than just uploading a pre-made map from the PDF you're already using.

Anyhoo, is there ways of posting pictures on paizo forum? I actually made long time four picture snippet tutorial on aligning the map grids for my kingmaker gm so I could post them here xD

No, the best you can do is post links to pictures hosted elsewhere. These forums don't have any way for you to upload assets, or host them on these servers.

Oki then, here is in form of imgus links what I used to show my kingmaker gm on map he had trouble with how simple the process is:

1) Dragging map to the well map grid

https://imgur.com/xHZi87v

2) Resizing map until its closer to the size of the grid.

https://imgur.com/I9bEnPF

3) Resizing it width wise until it matches

https://imgur.com/YUuMTJQ

4) doing same with height aaand done

https://imgur.com/60i9e1j

Its mostly matter of pulling the corners until its right.

Thaaats honestly why I'm confused by your tutorial "what this 'set dimensions' and align to the grid' and 'add pixels' thing", I just do it manually and it doesn't long time that way either <_<

I'm curious where that map came from.

I can't find any place to get maps from if you have a free account.
Can you post the steps for finding maps on Roll20?

The 'set dimensions' allows you to match the grids down to the pixel level, so there aren't different lines that are slightly misaligned. Some people care about that, others don't.

If you want precision, you can get it. If you're happy with "close enough" then you can do that too.

Dark Archive

Pathfinder Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

Its one of the kingmaker maps, I got it from my gm for purpose of showing him how its simple to do(we played that map encounter with it being off grid since he was still pretty new to running published stuff on roll20 by then as far as I'm aware)

I just drag and dropped it on the browser from File Explorer(thats the windows tool for checking through files) so was bit confused about why would you need to clutter desktop with maps since you can just directly drag the jpg or whatever format your maps are in.

Oh, ok. Yeah, it doesn't matter much how you navigate around your computer to find files.

But sometimes people get confused, and it's easiest to start with the file visible on the desktop so that they don't have a bunch of different windows open.

Remember, those instructions are written for people who can't figure out Roll20. People who have given up because it's all too difficult.

They are not written for people who are familiar and facile with the program.

Dark Archive

Pathfinder Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

About navigating files and instructions being for newbies: Ah, ok, yeah that is good point.

About precision: Hmm, I suppose though. Though with roll20 you can make roll20's own grid invisible, so players are unlikely to notice roll20 grid not perfectly matching map squares if they are just little bit off. Still, that kingmaker map was aligned by just eyeing it and its pretty close to exact, you can notice it being not being pixel perfect on bottom two squares though, so as I said, you can still do pretty good job fast with just eye and mouse.

That said, I do have to note that I really hate those rare ap/module maps were the map squares are different sized xD Because those exist and they are impossibly to align perfectly with roll20 grid which drives me nuts.

Yep very similar to what I do. its very easy to do once you understand how to make it work and takes not time at all. I have yet to find any map that I can't make work perfectly.

Colour me intrigued, Vic - what's "slightly unfortunate" about it? (If you can explain.)

Regardless, I've already told my wonderful wife to expect some significant expenditures regarding this, so I can't wait to see the various offerings!

It's not really appropriate to go into details, but the timing of certain events coincided in less than ideal ways.

Fair enough, figured that might be the case. Thanks for being frank about it.

well IM guessing that the 2nd edition news is the event that blunted the roll20 excitement? For me Im even more stoked. I will buy the new campaign even though im currently running a Starfinder campaign simply to support the license. Love roll20 and Paizo and I am eagerly awaiting the Starfinder products as well as the 2.0 future releases.

Pathfinder Adventure Path Subscriber

I just heavily invested in Fantasy Grounds and my question is, will content be exclusive to each system or will any AP etc. be published on both eventually?

Even with Pathfinder 2 on the horizon, i see enough people playing this for a long time and imho being worthwhile the investment.
And frankly things being exclusive would not please me.

Our digital tools licenses are nonexclusive. Each of them have their own priorities for publication, but it's essentially all available to all of them.

Agreed and I can see why the timing would make things a bit complicated for both parties. Personally I just plan to support whatever does come out to hopefully show strong market interest in the partnership and encourage further release and collaboration. There can't be to much Pathfinder or Starfinder on Roll20 in any form. I hope Roll20 jumps on the play test stuff immediately as showing strong interest will keep momentum behind the IP and keep them current but they seem to lag behind at times. Not sure why.
